ParticipantI keep hearing people mention extension tubes, which could be a good way to go since I think he has an lens reaches 200mm already. Thanks for the feedback!
allow me to nitpick. ext tube v teleconvertor but you probably knew this.

ParticipantDon’t know if any of you have seen this before, but I printed a copy and keep it in my photo carry bag just in case. I’ve never been hassled while photographing, but it’s good information to have.
i have copy of that also. and it totally pisses me off that i feel the need to carry it.
ennuipoet you make a good point about the CP problem but again it pisses me off.
that whole “see it, report it” mentality goes against everything i was brought up with.
i don’t do street art/people photography anyway but still this is nonsense. i did take some people shots at a ren faire but even there i used the camera at waist level with a wide angle and hoped rather than using the viewfinder. some realized they were being photographed and posed, most had no idea.

Participantpart of my problem is not understanding the terminology. it seems that “profile” gets used for both a paper profile (I.E. what particular paper you are using for that print) and what PS does before sending the file to the printer. and the results vary by the printer brand. but IIRC that can be addressed in the PS profile.
and frankly so far as monitor calibration $60-$100 for a tool to do a one time calibration isn’t in my budget.
PS 7’s online help is less than helpful since it says things like “set the profile” but isn’t clear as to how one does that. or i’m dense which is within the realm of probability.

ParticipantThis. But I also still have trouble bringing myself to photograph strangers at all. I don’t know why, maybe it’s because of the whole “photographers are terrorists” mindset pushed by the media over the last decade, but I always feel like someone might flip out if I take their picture.
that has nothing to do with it. they are afraid you will capture their souls.
seriously though that whole photographers are terrorists thing is just such a bunch of inexcusable crap. of the many bad things that came in the aftermath of 9/11 that is close to the top. combine that mindset with the absolutely pathetic lack knowledge about the law(s) of public photography and you get the countless stories of folks/cops over reacting.

ParticipantThis is the photography I wish I was shooting, the kind of raw emotion in Vivian’s work raises photography to a level of visual poetry. All the more, to me, because she never published any of it on her own.
ok i’m going out on a limb here to say i just don’t see it. my sister does street photography and has won prizes with some of it. and i look at her’s, vivan’s and others and go meh.
my sister defines my photos as traditional which i take to mean she thinks of them as meh so perhaps we are even.
on the subject of b/w i’m in the “it’s neat” camp. one of the deciding factors when i bought my last printer was it got good reviews on b/w printing. and the 13×19 epson 2200 my sister gave me is supposed to do decent b/w so i’m looking forward to that.

ParticipantHuh, 4 of those are mine. I better get to work 🙂
i tied at 91st with a bunch of folks and got a 118th and a 137th. so my averages are holding 🙂
but it was a fun contest and one in which lots of folks got votes from me.
Curious
Participantfor me this was a fun theme. i enjoyed taking the pictures and even if the voters didn’t like them … well there’s next week.

Participantnice photos. when i win the powerball i’ll add NZ to the list. actually i know a guy online who lives there and a vist would be fun.

Participantgood old google.
the official nikon teleconvertors are outrageously high. like $600 high. an off brand 2x on ebay is $100 which still seems a bit much.
Curious
Participantennuipoet i copy/pasted your comment to my sister. she has won some local prizes in juried shows and can use it much more than i can. i also sent her the link to the blog.
one note on vivian’s prints, since she isn’t printing them herself i wonder how much that impacts the finished print. a higher contrast print would IMO certainly enhance the “stark”ness.

ParticipantI would recommend taking a look at the 18-55mm VR Nikkor as a decent, cheap wide angle option – even if it is kind of slow and plastic-y, the optics are pretty decent.
neisonal i have a 18-55mm nikkor that was the kit lens for my D3000. wanting something a little longer got a 18-105mm. net result i have a barely used nikon lens i could sell you.
i don’t want to get rich from this and it’s sitting on a shelf right now. ebay used $$ is around $100.00.

ParticipantCurious, just to add my thoughts, the background is fine, but you probably want the subject a little more color popping.
took another of a different subject at the same time and planned on using that one if the background was ok.
my only concern is both have rather bad shadows which IMO distract some. i may try some more this weekend.

Participanti now have 3 and never used my original idea. two use the original items but while looking for their “pond” i found three other thing to make a group of. so once again the voters have a chance to tell me i failed 🙂
I noticed that no one ever really fails here. I’m usually impressed by everything, even if it’s for very different reasons. 🙂
well by “not failing” you mean getting 158th place. 🙂 a while back i got three votes. and know two folks who vote for me regularly.
but i’ve had a few successes and enjoy entering so it’s all good.

ParticipantIf you crop out the leaf in the top left corner (so that there’s one only “colored” object), I’d say it fits the rules as I’ve interpreted them, Curious.
that isn’t the shot i want to use but the setup is.
thank you and olavf too.
