ParticipantI got one of these: http://www.zipshottripod.com/product.cfm
It’s pretty nifty for smaller cameras (I’m not planning on using the D700 and 80-200 on it any time soon). Also, our overlords at Google were kind enough to send me one of the pilot chrome OS netbooks a few days ago, so I rhink I’ve made out OK 😉
i cheaped out and got my sister one of these. it’s more for her to leave in the car full time than tote. although at the collapsed size and one pound weight toting it wouldn’t be a problem. i have one similar in both my car and truck. comes in handy on occasion.

Participantno camera gear but nice gifts anyway. due to other expenses we (gift givers/receivers) were a bit tight this year.

Participantmy sister, who used to teach photography, says with a bright moon you can almost use the “sunny sixteen” rule so i must just be nuts.
CauseISaidSo IIRC someone in here said that auto focus lenses run out past infinity to allow them to come back to proper focus. hence when you manually focus you also need to back off a full twist to infinity just a tad. need to do tests of that also. my sister is here for the holidays so there will be photo excursions.

ParticipantI kept the ISO at 100, but the exposures vary from F9 @ 1/80 (the mostly full start of the collage) to F4 @ 1/4 during totality and back to F9 @ 1/15 at the end.
they really are nice photos but what struck me in this discussion is the low ISOs and the (relatively) high F stops and shutter speeds.
next chance i get i’m going to have to take some full moon shots to see what i can get.
one question for you all. manual focus at ??? i’ve heard that infinity isn’t good for these. of course i may be misremembering too.

Participantalthough it was clear here at 10:00 i had to get up at 5:00 and passed. seeing these makes me wish i’d stayed up.

Participantthey know you like photography, just tell them it’s for a contest.
i’m sure they will understand.
Curious
Participantgiven my photostream, thanks but no thanks. yours is pretty nice.
Curious
ParticipantI don’t often do well with these sort of contests, due to the subtle and astract nature of my brain, apparently 😛
maybe i’ll start using that. far better than admitting i take crappy photos 🙂

ParticipantGot it. And I’m ok with the last one.

Participanti found that with the new camera using the bag’s shoulder strap isn’t that bad. i didn’t weigh the old set up/bag but guess the new one is 1/3 lighter. i need to remember to put it on across the chest so the top flips away from me. flipping toward me is just too awkward to reach into. then again i’m not taking multi mile hikes. made a shoulder sling bag for the cheap, light tripod and monopod and that worked out ok.
sleeping substitute an ext tube set for the 60mm macro and that’s pretty much all i have in the bag anyway. there is a 35mm P&S but it doesn’t add much.
