thanks for the info. from a quick look it seems like a good place to join even if i don’t get rid of the equipment.

it’s both impressive and scary. we all know that a picture is no longer the arbitrator of what happened from iran’s crappy missile photoshop to cigar guy. and i guess with avitar we have some idea how far CGI has come. but this takes all that to a new level. it means that folks with much more modest tools and budgets than big hollywood studios can produce work that would easily fool even trained viewers. at least at first.

well if we have Drew’s agent at least the book won’t be a vanity printing. i’m looking forward to it. i’m getting quote credits in a book due out …. haven’t been told when that’s coming out either. but all i’m getting is to talk about my grandmother who was a famous radio writer. not much ego massaging in that.

i don’t think of myself as a prude but one of the nice things about fark is the censorship. if i want to read words you wouldn’t say in church or look at boobies there are places for that. but it’s also nice to have a place where that doesn’t happen. plus i tend to think it keeps the mentally and emotionally immature away. and the more rabid trolls.

Farktography Book samples were accepted and Drew is sending them to the agent today!

if the Farkbookv3.pdf you linked to before is the most recent version/what Drew got then my RL name didn’t get added on page 84. not that it’s a big deal.

    i’m glad it’s moving along.

hope you don’t mind but i played around with your photo. since the background/wall lighting isn’t uniform the resynthesizer grabbed both the light and dark ares and i had to do some more touch up. this isn’t my finest work but i (was bored) wanted you to see it with the space ship removed 🙂

I probably should crop that out.

if you have CS5 you can use creative fill to get rid of it. with the gimp (and a plugin) you use “heal selection”. IMO you don’t want a square crop on that.

if you find that there are enough instances where you want to remove stuff from a background like you have there and don’t have CS5 the gimp really works well. this tutorial on the resynthesizer will explain what it does. it has both linux and windows downloads. there are other tutorials and that’s not where i downloaded from my copy from but it will give you the idea.

i’m not a big gimp fan (long story) but i do have it and the resynthesizer and really like what i’ve been able to do with it. against, or on, a solid background the results are impressive. quick easy and nice results, what more can you ask for.

Is there any chance that you’ll ever see that woman again and present her with a print?

    csb time

it’s the mid ’70s and i’m down around college station, tx taking pictures of an old train wreck. these two guys come out from a dirt side street and stop on the tracks before driving off. the passenger sees my camera and does the “take a picture” thing holding up his beer. so take his picture and print it. next time i’m in the area i drive back into the place he came from hoping to give him the picture. don’t see him or the car he was in so i’m showing the picture to folks asking if they know where i can find him. and they don’t know who he is, where he is or anything else. since i was well intentioned and being friendly i’m a bit surprised.

then i remember that i’m driving a cop car i bought at auction complete with spot light.

to the left and below the comment box at “options” is a link to BBCode samples. i use it regularly 🙂 thanks anyway.

Never noticed that was a link. So now I’ve learned something from this thread, too!

see this is why i like it here. you tell me something real technical and i tell you a handy hint and we’re even 🙂

…but I don’t think I got much data out of Win Explorer unless I actually looked at the image properties.

what i used it for most times was to check the file date. my images are arranged by camera used/main topic/subtopic/images. if i have a folder labeled “beach trip” and hover over an image the date helps me find what i want. my system works for me but relies on my remembering a lot of info related to when the picture was taken. it does however keep me from having a huge “flowers” folder with every flower photo i’ve ever taken for example. YMMV

and on a personal note this sites use of BBCode instead of HTML is driving me nuts.

This might help: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bbcode It’s where I go when I have a brainfart and can’t remember the specific bbcode peculiarities.

Sorry to get your hopes up on that. 🙁 What makes it easy is the Canon DPP software. You just select the raw files you want to convert and click the batch convert button and voila. It’ll even resize them during conversion if you want.

since i got the L20 and the nikon transfer wizard i’ve been using it to import to the default save place in “my pictures” then running the windows camera wizard and importing to the designated organized folder. used to use a card reader but with the nikons it faster to import right from the camera. there’s no reason why that i know of that i couldn’t skip the default place and go right to my designated folder. then all i have to do is the jpeg conversion and rename the files/images at the same time. the plus is i save a step (and some storage) while the downside is having to manually delete the images from the camera.

guess i’ll go outside and bang out a few shots and try that.

ok that’s done. it’s not quite as easy as before but it’s not hard. add a step here take out a step or two there. plus the converted jpeg files are great. i used the very highest setting and while the resulting files are 1.5 times bigger than the ones i used to get shooting jpeg fine the detail and sharpness are much better. duh. another plus is now i’m doing what the cool kids do 🙂 still not sure how much i’ll use the NEF files but i have them and if my printing dreams come true they will be useful. fortunately the D3000 has a large buffer so i can still take another picture (or three) while the first one is being written to the card. can’t do that with the L20.

    THANK YOU ONE AND ALL.

I’m salivating over the potential of 150+ megapixel and what I might-could do with that.

my 10MP NEF images are 10MB +/- files so even with a 1TB internal and a 1.5TB external backup …. ouch. but the detail and ability to crop would be great.
