Participanti was taught to shot tri-x at 250 and under develop slightly. that was supposed to bring out detail without blowing out the highlights. overall it worked but unless you are processing and printing your stuff it’s not practical. and with the labs now processing b/w in color chemistry — who knows. supposedly the film is set for that. maybe this weekend i’ll shot some tri-x and have it processed and see what develops.
turns out the last roll of 120 i had processed was blank. may explain why i couldn’t remember what was on it. i’ve got several days off around the forth so that may be a good tome for a photo project.
in any case shot the chrome using the A620’s meter. it will slow down your shooting some but for now you need to do that. and probably the log sheet/notebook thing too. you won’t be getting EXIF data now.

Participant2) my pictures in general suck ass, mostly due to under exposure and 3) having shot color almost exclusively my whole life, I think I have to think differently to see scenes that would work well in b/w and 4) I need to pay more attention to high contrast scenes that probably won’t work as well.
re #2 – are they flat? and re the A620 as meter which setting are you using? i’m thinking center weighted would be best but have never used that camera am not sure. my hand held meters (pilot brand, see the link provided earlier) are area meters and worked ok for most shots. if you remember the glamor shoot photos one sees the meter is held right at the subject and usually has the hood/cover on. you can get the same effect with a reflective meter if you get close to what you want to expose for. that isn’t practical in most situations. and color or b/w learning the limits of your meter will take a while. as you already know this isn’t TTL metering and therefore is subject to a bit of kentucky windage.
re # 3 – b/w is different but not so much on exposure as how your eye and brain will process the resulting image. you DO need to develop a b/w eye. the row houses in charleston need a different interruption in b/w than they do in color. with color it does the work of making the houses seperate and stand out from each other. b/w not so much. on the other hand a shot for the bugs contest could be done well (if not better) in b/w if one shoots a dark bug against a light background. i’ve got some moth shots in b/w that are much better than they would have been in color.
re # 4 – high contrast can be used effectively if you do the zone method thing and think about the finished print. again it’s a matter of using the good parts of b/w well. if you can get a true white and a true black your golden. well if you can do that with out completely losing the mid tones. one of the tricks to b/w is keeping the shadow detail. when i was printing b/w it wasn’t too often that i could just put the neg in and print. a real good print usually required a bit of dodge and burn.
try some building shots and some of your kids. and when doing the kids think portrait not snap shot for grandma.

Participantif i had a darkroom i’d shoot a lot more film. photoshop just doesn’t compare to darkroom work. at least not for me. although a good large color printer might change my mind.
well for two grand i can get one of these epson’s. but while cheaper than setting up a complete darkroom it won’t be any time soon.

ParticipantHe says and I quote, “Hard Drive shot, making clicking sounds, its gone tits up”.
by setting a western digital up as the slave drive i was (once) able to recover the data i needed even after it started clicking. YMMV
as far as the card goes i’m guessing any of the recovery software that will read a HDD will read the card. from what you said i’m also guessing he wasn’t reused it.

ParticipantI really thought my use of alcohol in a Farktography contest would garner me with more votes. Oh well live and learn.
a) you can’t second guess the voters
b )there was a lot of quality stuff this week
c) you can’t second guess the voters

Participantbecause of the miserly habits learned with film to save exposures incase something that would really make a good picture happens.
years ago when i expressed an interest in photography our staff photog loaned me a pentax, gave me two rolls of film then sent the film to meisel (along with some company stuff) for processing. total cost to me – nada. he also taught me that film is cheap compared to all the other costs associated with commercial catalog shooting. i have never looked back since.
and digital just takes that to a whole new level.

Participantyeah swampa i followed that link from the contest. nice story well done. A+ would vote again.
and don’t worry about what your friends say, they’re just jealous.

Participantwell i won’t be posting anything tonight. got some props but it seems the muse was on vacation this week.
and IMHO three at >100kb each is enough in any given week. fark may allow 200 but at 640 x 480 you’re just wasting kb and slowing down the thread. it would be great if we could go down to 50kb each but mine look like crap at that file size.

Participanthad a cicada invasion in ’85 and haven’t seen hide nor hair of them since. and this area is supposed to have all the different cycles.
well i have seen one or two but that’s all.

ParticipantThe learning curve is so steep that even edmund hillary sees it as a challenge.
lol
but you do have a good point. to get the most from the new cameras requires a lot of reading and doing. for instance i understand the EV controls but seldom use them and there probably many times their use would have enhanced a shot. and mine will auto bracket if i remembered a)how it works b)to set it.

Participanti like the difficulty part 🙂
i may have to go hang out in the french quater to get something for this.

Participantit always starts wednesday nights at 8 pm EST for TotalFarkers, and goes to the mainpage sometime after midnight that night. Usually 12:01 AM Thurs. 😛
always except for the summer when it’s EDT. 🙂

ParticipantThere is no official cutoff time and some us view the photos well into Thursday.
i may still be looking at them on friday afternoon depending on the contest. i don’t vote until thursday late morning because i want as many as possible to have entered. i tend to only do the voting run through one time but a good late entry will get a late vote.

Participantthis is what i usually use. the kit to the left is a minolta 7i and the right is a konica/minolta maxxum 7D.
http://www.davesweblife.com/images/new%20camera/7D-vs-71-bags.jpgthere are also 35mm point and shot cameras in each bag as a backup. the 7i bag has a fuji A205 in it and there are fuji A360s in the car and truck. i’ve shot high placing entries on low end cameras and vice versa so the road to success isn’t based on expensive gear. at least not success in our contests. 🙂

Participantstaplermofo will construction type(air /electric) staplers work
Absolutely.
More so for the apple vs. oranges theme. I wish I had an air compressor.Lemme tell you man, chicks go crazy for guys with roofing staplers. Crazy.
Note: Chicks, like all people, probably just like the idea of someone reshingling their roofs for free.
i have both a compressor and a coil roofing nailer. believe me it’s not a chick magnet.
or maybe it’s the fact i don’t work for free.
and neither the framing nailer, the brad nailer nor the crown stapler seem to get much in the way of positive attention either. or i may just be whipping them out for the wrong women.
