Good grief, picking shots for this contest has hurt my brain! I shot some stuff and then going from that I went through the archive and found some mind bending things to flip. This contest is going to be weirdly awesome!

If you can spend a decent chunk of money, get a ballhead. If you’re going cheap, go with a pan head. Cheap pan heads can still be functional, but a ballhead that doesn’t move smoothly and lock down tight is basically worthless.

It’s kind of the same deal with quick releases – if it’s not 100% secure, you really don’t want to have one, but there’s not much that can go wrong with a 1/4″ thread.

Good points. And all the more reason to find a store that carries this stuff. I want to play with it before I buy it.

That may be tough, tripods are bulky and good tripods are targeted to the professional crowd so a lot camera stores don’t stock a wide selection. I did all of my research on the internet before choosing the Slik.

    Manfrotto has this:

    http://www.manfrotto.com/Service/Tripod+%2B+Head+Chooser/About+the+Camera+Support+System+Configurator+-+Tripod+%2B+Head+Chooser/3670788

which helps. Then I spent a lot of time on message boards and reading reviews at Amazon to pick something that had the features I wanted and I could afford. After seeing a few five and six hundred dollar tripods I knew I would have to change some criteria.

The only time a photo is universally bad, is when it is taken on a Nikon

This sooo explains the voting results I’ve been seeing…

(couldn’t be that I’m totally outclassed by the competition…)

Well, what can I say, time to buy Canon! Everyone knows that Canon has a special sensor that improves composition and provides fascinating things to photograph. Nikon, sadly, does not. 8)

Seconded. I shot a few shots of the mountains in Tennessee and Georgia last month but to my mind mountains should be…MOUNTAINS, Rockies, Sierra Nevada, Gregor Clegane, you know big!!

I’m an idiot. My first though that lasted about a second was, “Huh. George RRRRRRRR Martin must have named that giant guy after this mountain”.

    This pleases me greatly! 😛

I actually ruffled a feather ranting about this in the PSAEF, but here I think I should be OK.

Frankly, this camera makes me ill. It takes all the art out of photography. Digital media is a double edged sword, I absolutely would not be doing any photography if it did not exist. Still, at least I make an effort to try to actually work with the equipment. When you take the photographer out of the equation all you have is ambulatory surveillance camera. There is not thought, no emotion, no love in using a camera like this. Hell, even I am guilty of taking a shot without taking the time to make sure I had the exposure right because, hey, I can fix it in Lightroom! Removing the focus, the composition coupled with what we already have of removing exposure and you don’t have photography! What you have is a CCD with legs.

I regret all those years I wasted not pursuing something I am passionate about. I love how digital gave me back a window the world. Still, I can’t help but believe that photography as an “Art” would be better without it.

Or, I should tie an onion on my belt and start shouting at clouds.

B&W film is easy to develop yourself if you have access to a room you can make light tight. Even I can do it! I’m sure orionid could help you out with a materials list if you’re interested.

Tanks, darkbag, chemicals, measuring cup and a Canon 8800 F

    http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=canon+8800f&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=16562959047936590824&sa=X&ei=lQoFToSRDMK3tgfN1-ndDQ&ved=0CEgQ8wIwAQ

and you’re running film. Total outlay everything, about 150 bucks. I run B&W and color at home, B&H carries a dead simple C41 color kit

    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/109267-REG/Tetenal_T109306_C_41_Press_Kit_for.html

I run film about every 6 weeks unless I am shooting a special project. I’ve made my money back in saving developing cost.

So I ran into a bit of a snag. I have a real cheap 35mm camera and just finished the roll in it and then found out there is no where local to get it developed. Does any one know how I can get it done? Is there a best company to ship the roll to for developing? Its a ninety mile trip one way to the next town with a walmart

Everything you need to have film processed. Not hideously expensive, but considering the drive and gas to Wally World, probably your best bet.

Yes, but the Appalachians were dominating the skyline millions of years before rockies and sierras were even a twinkle in mama nature’s eye. Get off their lawn.

Oh, and Gregor Clegane? I can’t even find Westoros on a map, let alone Gregor.

Hey! I was born and raised in the shadow of the Appalachians! Like many men my age, I just want something a little younger, a little sexier!

And I think you will Westeros in County Clegane, Ireland.

I knew you and Kes would be all over that 😀

    It’s definitely a participation-only week for me–great stuff guys!

At heart I am a City Boy, (despite growing up in the mountains). So I did my obligatory three and am not worried about the results. What I am seeing is impressing the hell out me!

My gut leans towards not so much, but if you’re willing to leave it to the whim of the voters to believe that constitutes “volcano” I’ll allow it.

buildings as “man-made mountains” are right out. A kid on a pile of dirt playing king of the mountain would be fine.

OTOH, a rental car and a trip straight west out of the city puts you in the Appalachians right quick (and a fairly jagged, rocky stretch at that).

Yes, but I would need a drivers license for that, which at the moment I don’t have. (I let it lapse years ago and just never replaced it. It will be rectified shortly)

I’m gonna give the Street Volcano a shot, the worst that can happen is it tanks in the voting.

    I think it’s great for “Infrastructure” 🙂

Look, I am trying to work a little creative sophistry here! I have waterfalls in NYC, but mountains and volcanoes ain’t happening! At least I am not putting up skyline and saying “Well, those are mountains to me!”

Not to say I didn’t THINK about it!

    OK, I need a ruling:

Obviously, it is NOT an actual volcano. It is, however, a rupture in the surface of the Earth through which high temperature gases escape into the atmosphere. So, is it outside the box and on theme or just wishful thinking?

(Probably not the actual photo I am using, but of the same subject.

It’s because of the Xray shot, isn’t it? My bad, man.

You kidding? My boss LOVED that shot! 🙂 I will probably actually continue to work for him on a Freelance basis for creative stuff. Also, I picked up a gig shooting food for a friend of mine. So, things are not so bad.

I am playing with the idea of trying to pick up work shooting corporate events and such. It is low drudgery with all of the excitement of watching paint dry but it is paying work in photography that I am A)Qualified for and B) Have the equipment to do. I am really hesitant to try to actually WORK as a photographer…it scares the crap out of me. But I am thinking about it.

Need a feeler for this guy:

Too much black, not enough “shadow”?

Also, I’m having problems selecting a final shot. Any suggestions/recommendations from the following?

It’s not very “shadowy” it’s dark. As far the above, the last one, definitely

And CiSS: That is freaking awesome!
