I hope all of you are happy! I had Abe Vigoda all set for this contest, he was looking forward to it! Now, he’ll probably be dead before it goes live…have none of you any respect for Mr Vigoda?

My hunch is that since flickr tends to lean towards the photographer or artist showcases, that they default the compression to zero (quality to maximum) when they resize the images, attempting to preserve as much data as possible.

What I don’t understand is how can the file they send out from their server be so much larger than the file I uploaded to it? I appreciate that Flickr doesn’t hash my full size files, but even with zero compression the file simply should not be bigger than it’s source.

In addition, Flickr is DOUBLING the file size for reasons I cannot determine. If your source pic on upload is 180k, it will link to Fark from Flickr at 300+ k. I do not know why this is happening, but check your file sizes and you will see it. For tonight I hosted the images from my owner server and linked to Flickr for the larger size.

My Flickr pro is about to expire, I suspect I will not renew mainly because of of this.

Anyone who knows why Flickr images are so much larger, I would appreciate the info.

ETA: This has been going on since the redesign has rolled out, or at least that is when Fark started rejecting my pics for file size.

You can link the Flickr photo without captioning it and still be within the Flickr TOS. The photo only has to be linked, not advertised.

I can live with or without the click, though I use it extensively. It’s about the option to see it in full size not the necessity. I, also, only click through for the ones I intend to vote for. I like the idea in general because I have a lot of photos not used for Farktography on my Flickr that I want people to see. Come for Farktography, stay for the other stuff.

edit to add: I’ve also found a lot of other people’s very cool pics by browsing around after a click through.

Maybe Fark in general is losing some popularity?
It’s hard to keep folks coming back when there always seems to be some new, shiny thing on the net to check out.
I’ve tried to get others to join up, but so far they are content to lurk.

There is a lot of truth in this. Slumping vote totals is a regular conversation over the PSAEF (Photoshop forum). Fark goes through up down cycles in participation. People breeze in for a few months and then breeze on out. In the four years I’ve been Farking the strongest Farkers are part of a “group” PShopper, Farktographers, TFDers, who keep the wheels turning until the next group shows up for a while. It will pick up, we just have to wait for the next wave of Nerds to mature.

We had a patient who ate a pair of thong underwear, we had to retrieve them via surgery. It caused a divorce, the wife did not wear thongs.

“Why, oh why did he swallow a thong? That’s just so wrong…”

Um, yeah, I guess I should clarify, I’m a Vet Tech, so the patient was a Labrador Retriever…kind of relevant 😀

    POOP THREAD!

One time, my dog ate some underwear and then did that.

I think every dog does that at some point.

One of mine ate part of a blanket. It’s simultaneously hilarious, pathetic, and disgusting to see your dog trying to run away from the poop that’s “chasing” her.

Just fiddy entries in and I’ve LOL’d a dozen times. Nice. Also, for the record, not matter how good you may be at it: Quarters is a Game, not a Sport. Unless your school offered a scholarship in Quarters, which would be awesome! 🙂

Of course depending on the lens that comes with that DSLR it might be worth the uh, extra effort…

For the right rig and lens, let’s say a 1D with a fast “L”, I will go through labor for it…and I’m a guy.

I LOVE this idea! I am down with participating with both images and words. I am available for any writing projects the editors assign. (I would offer to assist with editing, but I suck at it!) I submitted to join the FB group (Dave Bledsoe, that’s Ennuipoet in the real world). I did a Blurb book last year for my portfolio and it turned out lovely:

Let me know what I can do help.

I snagged an old version of the Tamron 90mm on a Canon mount about three weeks ago. I am highly impressed with the quality of the lens and photos:

I shot this today, and the clarity and color are damn good, and this was the OLD version of the lens. All of the reviews of the Tamron 90mm Macro I read were positive and while the critiques were just, I compare if favorably to the Canon 100mm Macro which I’ve used previously.

For the price difference, the Tamron is worth it.[/img]

Seriously, if you want to do street photography, take something like a small digital compact. Everyone will just think you are a snap-happy tourist.

I’ve done well with my Yashica, though a lot of people do LOOK at the camera and ask about it, they don’t react like they do the Canon. I don’t even own a PnS anymore (except for an ancient Kodak which I am not sure even works).

I guess it just kind hurts to think of people shunning an art form over a misconception. If I pulled an easel out and started sketching people, I bet people wouldn’t want to punch me out. Of course, this is NYC, maybe they would! 😀

    This one is priceless.

Wow! Finally a use for the vuvuzela button 😛

“I am tired of you photographers taking pictures to use against people”.

Well, that explains everything! All of this time I’ve been using my photography against people. I am sincerely sorry, I shall place my cameras in the trash and never photograph again.

    🙁
