ParticipantI look at my pictures in both firefox and chrome and if one looks significantly different I try to find a happy medium. I haven’t really noticed much of a problem though, so maybe it was a wee bit too much saturation.
Ok, thanks Kestrana!

ParticipantCorsec & Soosh, those are beautiful shots!
Question for the group; while uploading my pictures using Firefox 3.0.1, which as I understand isn’t color managed, I noticed that my pics look way over-saturated. When viewing through Safari or my image programs, they look correct. So do you guys usually post for color managed or non-color managed browsers? I’m just afraid after I tone them down a bit, that they’ll look too dull on color managed browsers.

ParticipantOne more question; are solid borders allowed (in general also)? I can’t remember if I’ve seen them used or not and I have one for this week that is screaming for a black border.
Small solid borders are allowed in any contest.
Ok, thanks!

ParticipantSo would blurring out the background be allowed or is that like removing an object?
I think that would be ok.
Cool, thanks Elsinore!

ParticipantAnother great product that has a free 15 day trial is Color Efex Pro. No masking or layers, it’s non-destructive and has some very cool filters.

ParticipantThose are terrific shots, thanks for sharing them!
I live in central Phoenix and not very many made their way into my area, think we got rain maybe 4 or 5 times. I’m terrified of our bad storms when they’re close, but love watching them in the distance. Years ago, we had a freak one roll in about 6:00am, which is really rare and it scared the crap out of me! The lightning was striking so close to my house, I got my 3 cats and 2 dogs and we all sat in my car in the driveway for about 30 minutes. I was hoping my neighbors weren’t watching…wondering what the crazy lady was up to now. Of course, the dogs were quite confused with the no ride bit and the cats were just annoyed. 😆

ParticipantI’d forgotten about this thread…
So I’ve since purchased PS3, Capture NX2 and use Transfer NX & View NX for ratings, etc.. In View, you can also do a lot of your basic adjustments and be finished without even moving into NX2. NX2 has control points (aka U-point technology) and uses an active, non-destructive edit list, which is much faster and easier for me as opposed to layers/masks in PS, since I’m no PS expert.
The Nikon guys say the difference in the raw processing is that most of the other programs have to reverse-engineer the data, rather than using the data straight as is. The other Raw-related difference is there’s also the Picture Control utility, where you can send your favorite settings to your camera (D60 doesn’t have that capability though) and exchange them with other people.
NX2 doesn’t have all the editing functions of PS, there’s a healing tool, but no clone stamp (yet). These programs work with other cameras, not just Nikons. If anyone is interested, I recommend checking out these short tutorials: http://www.capturenx.com/en/lessons/lessons/index.html
There’s also a longer, more in-depth workshop taught by a Nikon guy which goes through the whole process of using the three products and I learned a lot from it, it’s a great session. There are three 45 min clips, the first 30 min is kind of trivial stuff, but the rest is really helpful. Go to http://www.video.bhphotovideo.com/, then type Capture NX2 in the search box, you’ll then see the three videos listed in the bottom row (at least that’s how they’re showing up now.).
Just thought I’d pass on the info for anyone else who hates working in Photoshop as much as I do. 🙂

ParticipantOne more point of clarification, the pictures have to have been TAKEN after whatever contest they’d fit in, right?
oops, I lied, one more thought – I’m guessing we shouldn’t go out and shoot something new to use?

ParticipantThanks for your replies! Elsinore, the link above has examples when you mouse over the filter name. Sleeping, yes that is what I meant, thanks!
As for the filters, so the ones that are related to lighting (inc Darken/Lighten Center?), contrast, tone, saturation, etc., would be ok?
I probably wouldn’t use the more stylized filters like that Glamour Glow or Midnight for a Fark contest, but just wondered where the lines were drawn in case I wanted to use one lightly or on a portion of the picture. I want to make sure I don’t forget and accidentally use one I shouldn’t.

ParticipantAnother question; say you have someone horseback riding with other stuff in the background. Do you want only the horse or the person to be ‘the object’ or can they be color-popped together?
kashari
ParticipantAre we allowed to use filters, like a white neutralizer?
This question actually applies to the contests in general. I see in the rules it states ‘no artistic painting, drawing’ kinds of filters, but what about ones like Neutral Density, or Glamour Glow, that are found in Color Efex?

ParticipantOk, thanks for your input, you guys!

ParticipantI’m a n00b to the DSLR world and recently purchased a D60. I did a photo workshop where we shot in RAW. In the post-processing portion of the workshop, they were using PS & Nik Filters. I was told and have read that for NEF processing, Capture NX 2 should be used, since it reads all the camera data, where some programs won’t. Anyone know if that’s true or not?
