ParticipantThat sounds like a funny premise for a show, is it good?

ParticipantYou can also use the D-Lighting feature in Capture NX2. I prefer that over doing it in-camera since you can do fine adjustments, opacity changes, etc..
a bit of googling tells me that costs money. and the NEF codex just let’s you see the photo from RAW. and i have PS7 which won’t work either.
i may shoot some NEF/jpeg to check write times and play with the NEF is i can find something free to use. more googling finds a site that explains how to use the Gimp with NEF. guess i’ll try that.
ViewNX 2 has been released and it’s free, it has a lot of adjustment capabilities built in and has added video editing also. But I don’t remember if it has D-Lighting adjustments in it.

ParticipantHave you messed around with the Active-D lighting feature? I haven’t had an opportunity to play with it much but it should help with the shadows.
no. and so far i haven’t even looked into what Active-D lighting is. the camera has it but i’ve been concentrating on those features i know how to use.
but i will get the manual out soon and check it out.

ParticipantThis was a great contest, nice job everyone!
The lighting in both Silverstag & Cretinbob’s pictures was exquisite, truly the kind that makes your soul say ‘ahhhhh’. 8)

ParticipantOMG, I can’t wait for the D7000!! I’ve outgrown my D60 and had been waffling between a D90 and a used/refurb’d D300s. But as soon as the rumors started a few months ago, I held off and I’m glad I did! I have about $600 saved up for it using credit card rewards, rebates & gift cards, which will help justify it mentally. 😆

ParticipantYou can post up to 1100 pixels tall, but only up to 640 wide. The thing about the file size limit is that it’s fuzzy. 200k is the stated limit, but frequently pictures fail if they’re 150k-180k. It’s safest to keep them under 130k. I frequently aim for less than 100k myself.
Ok, thanks Elsinore! I don’t remember what the width was when I tried to post, but I’ll watch for that and the total size next time.

ParticipantI had problems with one of mine today too and it was only 150kb at 640w.
Also, I’d asked before about how some people are able to post larger pics at 1024, but I don’t remember what thread it was in now. I tried a couple of times since then to post ones that were a bit bigger, like 900 (120kb) and still got the ‘image too large’ error. What am I doing wrong?

ParticipantHi all, thanks for working on this and for including my pics, it’s quite the honor!
In trying to catch up, I’ve read a couple of different numbers for the total number of pics. Was the number decided upon yet and also, what size book are we looking at?

Participant*shrugs*
The title is evocative, however the theme description does say ‘Landscapes with a Water Feature’ – and I always read the description and check the discussion thread, because I’ve been caught off guard a few times by some detail about the theme that I didn’t know about and now all three of my planned entries are no good and I have to search the archives and upload to the image host … not my idea of fun.Yeah, I need to be more observant about the descriptions. I saw this was coming up a few weeks ago, then didn’t realize it was here until I saw the thread post to TF and just thought “Hurry, Waterscapes!”. 😳
I think you have no worries with your waterfall shot; I like the perspective of it.
Thanks! And if I would’ve paid attention to ‘the hopper’, I might have held it back for the waterfall contest. 🙂

ParticipantIn short, if your entry has no land, I’m not voting for it, sorry.
Hmmm, see I’m the exact opposite on this contest since it’s titled ‘Waterscapes’ and not ‘Landscapes with a Water Feature’. I hesitated on submitting my waterfall one because I thought it might have too much land. 😆

Participantkashari, Filesize is 640 wide by up to 1100 height. But image size needs to be under 200K–and sometimes, those close to it get rubbed out anyway. Download ‘irfanview’ (do a google–it’s free, it’s safe, it’s good–using it for 10 years no problems–also does a mean job at ‘auto image correcting’ in a pinch) and the plug-ins, one of the plug-ins is ‘save for web’ and it should get you down to a reasonable size.
For example, my ‘pylon’ original that got #1 (insert plug here–yeay, me!) last week started out as a 3888×2592 9.2 megapixel, saved down to a 1200×800 932kb; irfanview got it down to the 640×427 at 85kb (you will be prompted to resize if it’s the original really big shot; elsewise, you can first resize with irfanview’s toys). Depending on the image, you might have to reduce quality from 100 to maybe 80-90, but the result should be fine in 90% of pics.
Oh, ok thanks and congrats!
Oops and now I see now that I wrote my question wrong, meant 1100 longest side, but got it answered right anyway. 😳
kashari
ParticipantSpeaking of file sizes, I thought the in-line photos were restricted to approx 640×480 and then an actual file size also, but I’ve seen pics where the shortest side was like 1100 or something like that. How does that work when I sometimes have to resave my 640 jpg to get the file size down to where it’s accepted?

ParticipantDon’t forget about Capture NX2 – I do 98% of my post processing using it and only go into PS for one of the Nik products or for some occasional cloning.

ParticipantI ordered one of the camo rain covers from this place, but haven’t had a chance to use it yet. I picked it over the clear ones since it also helps block the light to enable viewing the LCD screen better. http://fotosharp.com/camouflage_rain_covers.html
The surprising thing is, the vendor lets you have a 15-day trial period before paying, not many places offer that nowadays.
They also have a sweet set of laminated cheat sheet cards. Since I’m still fairly new to doing more advanced things with my camera, they’re great for me…better than a bunch of printed computer papers stuck in my bag. 🙂

ParticipantPerhaps I shouldn’t show a pic before a theme – but check this one out.

I guess I was panning along with the first guy’s head and the rest of the world was flailing around. That’s a 1/4 sec exposure.
U-Man, that picture is beautiful beyond words, I love it! I really like the other two also, but that one really grabbed me.
