THe book, which was dead, then alive and then dead and then alive and then dead is now alive again. Publisher is looking to run a sample copy next week apparently. Of course this has the added problem of due to all the stupid military stuff we’ve dealt with the past year, it’s not done yet. But if I can actually hook up my desktop, I should be able to finish it.

    What I Need:

If you volunteered to write an essay about Farktography (or are new and would like to write a brief one page essay about why you love Farktography or what it (or photography) means to you) I need it NOW. If I don’t get enough essays I will have to scrap the idea and pull the 2 I do have.

If you volunteered to proofread the copy, I need you to commit to doing that this weekend. This is primarily looking for spelling/grammar/textual consistency (things that are supposed to be bold are bold, etc). I may not have the .pdf available until Sunday evening and I will need immediate turnaround on it.

If you procrastinated on getting me a permission slip, I need it NOW. I’ll have a list of this posted in the forum and your email as soon as I have access to the file.

You can always archive dive unless it’s specifically part of the theme

Yeah, never got into that one myself. I do likes me some Trek & Firefly. The original 3 SW’s are quite enjoyable as well, although I consider them more sci-fantasy than -fiction.

Watch it. B5 is my favorite all time tv series ever.

Ok, here’s what I don’t understand. In all the other threads, voting is enabled for everything, so why is the default for Farktography voting-disabled?

There’s a specific contests category we select when we create the link to the contest. It tells the thread to make voting an option-enabled feature. Why? So we don’t wind up getting votes on people’s comments vs. actual contest entries, and so you can post pictures in the thread without enabling them for voting (as sometimes people do when it’s a shot that doesn’t follow Farktography rules but they want to share it anyway).

No legos in any context are fine but the photo should prominently feature them

I could see myself losing interest in Farktography because of it. That would really be a shame, because I love all the other stuff about Farktography: the competion and camaraderie among participants, the challenge of coming up with entries each week, the incredible database of knowledge and wisdom here at the forum … I could go on but this is probably already TL;DR for most.

I warned Drew that feelings like this were going to happen because of this change. I cannot blame you for feeling like this; I have been feeling this way too and it shames me to admit, because Farktography is about so much more than votes. I would miss everyone here terribly, so I don’t think I’m in danger of stopping right now – but I find myself working and thinking less about it. Which is one reason this week is kind of disappointing to me. I worked really hard on my entries this week and even combining funny/best isn’t going to drag them out of the cellar. C’est la vie.

This doesn’t just affect Nikon users though. Sure, there’s 2 official NikonUSA repair shops and 23 other “authorized repair facilities”. But all the mom and pop stores carry Nikon – what happens when they lose 10-50% of their business? Between this and Kodak, you could see a large number struggling by the end of the year.

If building your own is just too much to do, I do love my HP Pavilion desktop. It’s about 6 years old now but it runs intensive MMO games well and has no problem with resource hungry photo editing software like Lightroom. Obviously something new is going to have better internals, but I bought it because it had expandable RAM slots and at the time 250GB of memory was a lot. I replaced the video card on it with a Nvidia geForce 5100 Professional and added more RAM. I have a Samsung 26″ flat screen monitor that I got from CostCo, which is a great place to get a deal on that sort of stuff. Then, I have a Razr Lycosa keyboard and DeathAdder mouse which aren’t needed for photography but they’re comfortable, durable and look cool.

sleeping that’s all well and good if you need a major repair – but if you just need say, a new door for the SD slot, or rubber for your plug interface, do you want to have to send it to another state for a 3 week turnaround on something you could fix yourself?

It’s kind of the same thing with RadioShack. Oriond always complains how most of those stores don’t have piece parts anymore – the whole thing is an indication that we’re losing a lot of people who have the technical know-how to fix things on their own. And if sources of parts start disappearing, we’ll never get that back.

I kinda Skyrimed out on 8 pm but mine are up now, and there is so much win in this thread. Although I’m also kinda disturbed what some of you have laying around the house.

Are you looking for a computer specifically to handle photos as it’s primary job? Or is it multipurpose/multiuse?
