I don’t know if it’s the angle, but you look a bit like a younger Hugh Laurie in that picture, even though the hair colour is wrong.

I once made 35mph in a Mini Metro.
    Does that count for anything?

I bought a canon EF50mm 1:1.8 II today from my local pawn shop for $25. there was no price tag on it and he asked me what I was willing to pay for it.
There was a sigma lens for something with a tiny little mount for $25 so I said the same because I wasn’t sure the auto focus would work. It works just great.

So do you all think I got a good deal?

I bought that lens new for a friend’s birthday, and he was really happy with it. For the money (it was about 9000 yen new), I think it’s fantastic.
So, yeah, I would say good deal.

ok, here’s a (rather poor, I admit) comparison chart, 1:1 crop. I was aiming for forcing some CA, instead what I wound up with was dark text. f4 at top, f32 at bottom.

Wow! Okay, that’s pretty damn good. There’s definitely a difference between the L and normal glass, especially at larger apertures, but not so enormous to justify the extra expenditure–for me at least (I’m talking purely from my own point of view here, considering the uses for my pictures).

    Thanks!

    Congratulations.

You won’t be able to enter any ultrasound pictures in competitions, *UNLESS* you have taken them yourself 😉

Olympus user…yeah, there’s some truth to that article. Olympus fanboys are quite rabid.
I went digital without doing enough research into sensor size. I wouldn’t buy Olympus now, though the lenses are good and pretty cheap.

Incidentally, I read the EF85mm 1.8 is actually sharper than the 1.2 L equivalent.

I’ve heard that, too. I’ve also heard the same thing about the 50mm 1.4 vs 1.2. If I remember right, people were complaining that with the 1.2 they had to stop back to 1.4 anyway to get a sharp shot so it wasn’t worth the extra cost. And people with the 1.4 were pretty pleased with it.

It’s been a while, so I’m not sure exactly where I read it. It may have been from reviews on B&H, or it may have been here: http://www.the-digital-picture.com.

Then it might be time for me to dig behind my sofa cushions for spare change and get myself a new lens 😀

Anyway, I’m off to put on my scary clown outfit and invade chupathingie‘s dreams.

That Ef50mm 1.4 is the lens I am thinking of going for, so that’s good to hear. I don’t really want to bang out 180,000 yen for the F1.2, or 400,000 yen for a secondhand F1.0. The F1.4 version seems like the best deal.
The F1.8 is dirt cheap, but I have heard mixed reviews of it.

That’s an interesting contrast. The right picture (with the L lens) is a bit soft, isn’t it? I take it that it’s not always like that?

That’s pretty much my take on it. And as CauseISaidSo said, some of the difference is in the build rather than glass. The gold-band EF lenses seem decent in that regard, way better than the kit lenses, so they have that going for them.
Incidentally, I read the EF85mm 1.8 is actually sharper than the 1.2 L equivalent.

With regard to a FF camera, I am not in any rush, and my budget will probably only extend to a 5D MkI, but next year, when they release the 5D MkIII, a secondhand MkII may be within range. It all depends on whether I can hide enough money from ‘er Indoors.

My old mobile phone had a 5mp camera on it. It can no longer be used as a phone, so I am wondering about giving it to my eldest niece, as she seems to like taking snaps (she’s eight).

    Got to indoctrinate/start them young.

    Kestrana and orionid:

I just realized that your wedding might end up looking like this:

    (not my picture)

I love the one person in there that looks like they’re holding a camera phone in the midst of a sea of 300 and 400mms….

I didn’t see that first time round. That’s hilarious. And ballsy!

Actually, if I recall, there was a $5 fee to apply for the permit, which was not refundable. If you were to win their permit lottery (about a one in ten chance, from what their website says), then you had to fork over an additional $7 for the actual permit.

Ah, well that’s not too bad. A sort of nominal application fee.

I wondered if the leaf was being held, but from the photo alone it was hard to prove.
I remember last year going out to shoot some autumnal colours, and there was a guy with a bottle spraying water onto the leaves for extra effect.

BLM is the Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency in charge of much (all?) of the public’s land. And I’m actually kinda happy that they make it difficult to get to some places. When the general population is allowed in, then you have to “sissify” everything so that there’s minimal risk of someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing getting hurt. For example, if you look at my photo of Toroweap at Grand Canyon from the Waterscapes contest, you’ll notice there are no rails or warning signs anywhere. It’s a completely different experience than the normal tourist sites on one of the rims. They don’t restrict access to Toroweap, but they purposely don’t maintain the road beyond minimum accessibility to discourage crowds.

Well that part doesn’t sound too bad, but the non-refundable up-front payment for a permit which you might not get sounds like something criminal.

It was a lovely photo, cameraflage. I liked the soft-yet-vibrant colours.

/What’s “BLM” and why are they allowed to extort people?
