ParticipantI need to start thinking about this one…
Heh. Me too…

ParticipantYou summed it up pretty well CauseISaidSo

ParticipantThere are zero votes until the contest goes live.
Actually I’m pretty sure it’s possible to vote in the period between the thread being posted and it going green, but usually there aren’t many.
There’s a brief period between when the thread gets posted and when the voting gets cut off until the contest goes live, but that’s not usually more than a few minutes.

ParticipantThere are zero votes until the contest goes live, so really you’re pretty accurate as far as my ‘gut feel’ goes for such things.
And a lot of the initial spike is people that vote for themselves, and possibly one or two others.

Participant‘band literal’ is certainly within the realm of the contest.
Even this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj-x9ygQEGA
And if you have something awesome to share with the class, I think we’d all appreciate it. I haven’t worked on this one at all yet 😛

ParticipantAny day. Just all three shots from the same outing/day.
Ironically, today’s trip was a total bust for me. We went to the local fish hatchery to watch the salmon run the ladder, but between the fish, and the people, and the lighting, I got one decent shot out of the mix. I’m much happier with the shots I took later this afternoon, which I’m going to save for Autumn. I think I got enough that are usable from last weekend thankfully.

Participant]I hear ya. The code I write for pay is not the kinda code that I like to play with or even necessarily enjoy much. And I’m assuming your use of “copious” is dripping with sarcasm 🙂 (it’s certainly not a word I could use to describe my free time).
Yeah… Between photography, and the computers around here (We have more computers in this house than people. And that’s with all the kids here), and my web project…. oof. Kat and I are developing a photo website so I’m busy learning how to hack up joomla and gallery2 templates at the moment. Fortunately, it’s all modifying code and not writing from scratch. I wouldn’t know where to start there.
you would be surprised how often “blah, that’s crap” ends up getting more votes than “I love this picture”.
I’ve really only been surprised once in that way. Now the other way, THAT happens just about every week! “I really like this picture.” … “Hmm, evidently that’s an opinion that I share with very few others.”
Bottom line – forget the voters. It’s nice when they like you, but you can’t necessarily tie your happiness as a photographer to their votes.
No doubt. It still hurts when something I think is great tanks, but I try and remember the format and the medium – it’s not exactly set up for subtlety and voters don’t have time to ponder each and every picture. If it doesn’t have immediate ‘grab’ in a 640x format nestled in among a few hundred other pictures, it’s likely to get overlooked. Add to that the (hunch of mine) that an increasing number of people are only voting for a handful of pics any given contest these days and… well, for the most part I’m happy with the stuff I put up, and I get comments and complements outside the contest pages now and then, which is nice.

Cool! Is that as fun as it sounds?
*shrugs* it pays the bills and whatnot. I’m a CAD monkey, so I don’t really get to play with the toys unless I bring stuff home to mess around with in my copious free time. For the most part, it’s trying to shove 15lbs of stuff in 5lb boxes all day.

ParticipantMounted on an original in-the-box circa 1977 Intel Development board.
You have an MCS-85 SDK board? One of these?
Heh. That’s pretty cool. I haven’t done anything with this one, ’cause I have a ‘trainer’ from the CC classes I took – It’s basically the same thing without the breadboard area, and yeah, I know the pain of hand-entering op codes via the hex pad 🙄
These days I’m more interested in doing something with the collection of hardware I collected from working at Z-World, or even more fun, making use of some of the stuff from the motion control company I work at now. I’m sure the missus would love it if I got something – *anything* out of the house, but I dunno. It’s cool, and it’s in the box.
http://www.follandfamily.com/TF/mypics/intel-0805.jpgI’ll certainly let you know though 😉
lokisbong, thanks! I found that particular one in a collection of junk that was abandoned around Folsom that the town decided to turn into a museum. The countryside is virtually littered with such things though. I just love the curves on this one.

ParticipantThe best advice I can give is to mirror what curious said – try and see the world around you as though you were looking at a photograph. Then, for any given situation, whether you have a camera in your hand or not, try and think about what you’d do to best capture the moment you see.
Some books on basic techniques for various situations can help, but getting to know your camera and just trying to capture the images you eye sees does wonders.

Participant😀
I’d been thinking about using that one before you mentioned it, but I made the extra effort to find the thing in my garage

ParticipantSorry, orionid, I couldn’t find anything older than 1977. I do have the box & manual though, and I believe it still works.

ParticipantBest I’ve ever done is around 135 – Can’t verify because my old Alfa GTV-6’s speedo topped out at 85, but I could do that at 3rd gear. According to the stats, when you hit the rev limiter in 5th that’s about the speed.
Oh, and I had a rental SEAT when I was in Germany. The hull speed on that thing was 128mph. Any faster and the wheels didn’t feel connected to the pavement any more. Kinda takes some of teh fun out of the Autobahn.

ParticipantAwesome 😀
/and as I told Kat, *perfect* way to let fellow photographers know, and certainly an appropriate way for a photographer to announce 😀

ParticipantConga-rats, man. Awesome shot.
