We might want to put a note about no HDR, otherwise people will think it’s open to that.

    Yepper.

Allowing, but not limiting, previous contest entries certainly implies that they’re okay.

/I’m fine either way, but you’re not likely to see any HDR entries from me, either

Therein lies the rub. What is art?

    I don’t know, but I know what I like…

/serious answer: I believe that art is something that makes you think, or feel an emotion about it. So, from a photography aspect, that’s the defining level between something that’s artistic, and something that’s a snapshot to me. That nebulous line between ‘that’s a cool picture’ and something that touches you deeper; makes you ponder what you’re looking at on a deeper level. It can be anything from a simple rose to a highly orchestrated studio shoot to a random person on the street, but it has to illicit some emotion, and/or a ‘pondering’ (for lack of a better word) on a core level to really be artistic.

And there’s a lot of things that I would consider ‘art’ that I don’t necessarily like. And a lot of things that some people wouldn’t consider ‘art’ that I do. And a lot of things that people call art that for whatever reason doesn’t speak to me on some root level, and I therefore can’t appreciate it as such, whether I “like” it, or not.

At the gut level, I think it’s an individual thing. One man’s trash is another’s treasure, and vice-versa, if you will.

I’m so, so saving this for the next time someone asks me “What camera should I buy?”

(Which has been a few days, so it’ll probably be sometime this weekend)

Yes wedding will be in Virginia!

There’s a DOZ joke in there, but I’m not gonna make it 😉

    /again, congrats, and don’t say I didn’t tell you so 😉

We’re going to try and make it, but it’s going to depend heavily on finances and whatnot. We’re already committed to go to Vegas in April. An East Coast trip may break the bank, even if we eat rAmen for six months 😥

I’d just be happy if my folks could find the bajillion pictures I took as a kid with my old Yashika FX-3. I have one small photo album, but I know there are scores of pictures in a box somewhere in their house. I know I took about 100x the shots in that album when I was in the PI alone.

Thanks causeisaidso & olavf! I might be able to get them posted myself if my mobile hotspot thing works with my phone. If not, I’ll just have to get them in late.

Do you have a Pre Plus? That one works pretty well

-bought a new laptop (’cause the screen on my old one sucked ass and the thing was starting to go anyhow) and wanted to see what my pics looked like on the demo unit. Fry’s doesn’t have wireless available in their store – not even for the sales guys. So he got to stand there while I made my own 😀
/surprisingly quick. Even the sales weasel was impressed

We got the kids matching Canon A-series cameras last year for Summer Solstice, but I can’t remember the model off-hand and I wouldn’t recommend them because they run off AA batteries and, quite frankly, the battery life sucks, and they’re slow. And the battery life sucks worse with hybrid rechargeables.

Also, they were in the $80 range (my youngest is eight, so it’s a different game) which probably isn’t appropriate for a 4-5-year-old.

And, FWIW, the way it works here is the oldest loves taking pictures, but he’s gotten more reticent about doing so – I think he feels intimidated by Kat and I and doesn’t seem to even want to show us what he does. The girls like shooting weird videos and putting them up on youtube. Pics are secondary.

Sorry ’bout that. I’d intended that as an answer to powerfulkatrinka‘s question.

But, the same thing basically applies to Kat and I for various reasons. Between my mobility issues, and especially when Kat was sick, photography, and specifically Farktogaphy to a large extent, kept us moving. The past two years have taken us from flutzing around (I used to have the bug when I was a kid, but lost it) to being serious enough to try and do something with it.

If someone can’t do it for you, Kat may be able to. She’s usually at the computer at that time of the day. I’d volunteer, but I’m at work at that point (it’s 5PM on the Left Coast) so my ability to post my own can be iffy…

Oh, and to make things easy, I’d recommend building your posts in scratchpad and sending the result from the preview pane with the links & any text so it can just be copypasta’d in.

Sometimes there are benefits to being married to a fellow Farktographer.

“Honey? If you’re not busy, could you go and buy me a fish?”

“Can’t you just grab something at the supermarket”

“No, they don’t have them with the heads on. I asked”.

Also, I suspect one of Kat’s submissions will be something I spotted alongside the road. I pulled the car over, kids and all, and said “you’ll be wanting a picture of that”

    😉

I don’t have a particular recommendation, but this sounds like a perfect opportunity to pick up a micro four-thirds 😀

That one was non-votey. There are a few crustaceans and the like in the mix though.

I noticed the crayfish, but since it has fish in the name I allowed it. But I’m seriously full of fail lately; were there others besides the crayfish?

My brain went all ‘crawdad’ on that one. I could have sworn there was one or two others, but apparently not. I chalk it up to too many hours at work 😕
