    I think Alaska has DST as well, though. It’s Arizona and Hawaii that don’t. These also just happen to be the two states I have lived in for the past six years.

    The altitude’s not really a huge problem for me-I grew up living at ~6000 feet, and I’ve been higher than 14000′ several times. Still, driving straight from sea-level to 14k doesn’t do wonders for your head. One of my roommates basically passed out and had to get on oxygen. I think the highest she had been before we got to Mauna Kea was about 4000 feet.

    Anyway, I’ve got some more photos from yesterday, including some stuff from Maula Loa observatories:

    So we’re all on the same page, right?

    Right. And cars are alive, right?

    They consume, they excrete, they are mobile, modern ones even have brains that think

    They still don’t reproduce though.

    wanna bet?

    Until I see little Smart cars waddling away, it didn’t happen.

    How many nested quotes can we get?

    At some point they’ll collapse in on themselves and form a black quote hole.

    I wanna see that in a twisted kinda way 😈

    A hole from which no substance can escape.

    Past the point of no return.

    Would it help if we divided by zero?

    do
    {
    quote(last_post);
    }
    while (true);

    I’m dizzy now…thanks!

    Just wait until Elsinore gets back.

    So will the forum engine start line wrapping the earlier ones at some point?

    Wheres my black quote hole?

    Improbability passing 10,000 to 1. Passing 100,000 to 1. Passing 1,000,000 to 1. Approaching infinite improbability. Standby.

    You know, it kind has that Mayan temple thing goin’ on now. Xtapolopacetl is pleased.

    U-Man‘s original post is getting narrower, but not as quickly as I might have thought. Perhaps there’s a quantum effect in force.

    Keep going, guys! I think if we compress the first quote enough, we might be able to finally discover the Higgs-Boson.

    Oh good Lord.

    /still playing along

    I must get in on this experiment

    Well it would seem we are definitely all on the same page now! Question answered U-Man

    Woohoo! U-Man’s text shrank.

    I wonder if the next nested quote shrinks too.

    I wonder what this stepped pyramid looks like in side-elevation…

    Are you mad? The human mind can’t cope with that kind of horror!!!

    :mrgreen: Hope mrgreen doesn’t break the thread!

    This is too funny!

    I’d say so, but I’m easily amused.

    Simple things for simple minds?

    Man, this is still going on,… Shouldn’t you people be out photographing something?

    We are approaching the point not even light can escape!

    I say we keep moving forward, beyond the event horizon

    OK, serious question, though I am keeping the compression going: Can the part of the triptych be non-living? Lemme esplain…no, there is too much, let me sum up, My idea is a triptych close up on one hand fretting/playing guitar, the middle panel of the just the neck and strings no hands and the final trip being the fingers picking/strumming. Does this the inclusion of the center panel without organic matter rule this idea out?

    I think you’d better post the question separately, because it’s gonna get buried in the hourglass thingy. 🙂

    IMO, if the “subject” of the overall triptych is the guitar, and the hands are just an accessory, then it’s not valid.

    *Edit to say: this hourglass should be the standard format of our forums from now on.

    {Cheech voice} wow, this is a fuckin’ trip, man. 8)

    My bad. =D
    Although, I really don’t feel so bad. It’s great! It’s awesome! Would do business again!

    Heh, U-Man’s post got bigger & bolder with your post! 😆

    Wow, that is some funky equation of state for forum quotes. When you compress them, they get bigger.

    I found out this afternoon that I have to make about six of the best shots I’ve ever produced by next Monday. Just for fun, but no pressure… (archive diving not allowed. Whee!)

    What for?

    f/1.2, go!

    That would be nice. Sadly, I can only afford f/1.8 right now.

    plama bah- you’ve got to have something! 😉

    I looked, I got nothin. I don’t really like fairs and similar events, so I tend to not go. The last thing I went to that would count would have been the Tucson Celtic Festival about four years ago, but I didn’t bring my camera (my hands were full of instruments-I managed to win the amateur music competition, tho).

    I have zero fair/festival shots in my archive-not even anything that could be construed vaguely as such-and I’m pretty sure there isn’t one on the island before the contest goes live. Think I’ll sit this one out. Good luck everybody!

    Living here is pretty ridiculous, I must admit. One of my roommates was watching “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” the other day, and I recognized some of the beautiful shooting locations. Then I remembered that I could just drive there whenever I wanted.

    I’ve had some conflicting opinions about photo #5 (waterfall, long exposure) versus an alternate I took. What do y’all think:

    I prefer the one I posted above, but about half of the people I show these two to prefer this one. I’m not entirely sure why.

    PS: You could always come visit, Orionid, I’ve got couch space.
    PPS: Rav-The tradeoff is that I literally can’t get autumn or winter shots. It’s always summer here. Beautiful, warm, perfect summer. I guess I could get snow on top of MK. Oh, did I mention that I’m going to be spending a night on the mountain next week? I just got a new tripod, too! Star trails, here I come!

    The only problem I can see is that the first one has a significant out of focus foreground element. Admittedly, I have a very limited grasp of portrait photography, but I always like portraits without a blurred foreground better. In this case it isn’t so bad, though-it certainly doesn’t ruin the photo. I do like the second one better, however.

    I have rarely seen really good photos of babies and/or small children like this. Well done!

    Great to see you’re settling in, Farktographer. Looks like you could corner the market on castle shots, there! I quite like the first one, the composition is quite pleasing.

    Do you plan to make it to the other islands or are you going to be “stuck” on the big one?

    Well, I’m on Oahu, not the big island. I will get to the big island every now and then, though, and I might get to Maui a few times. As for Molokai, Lanai, Kauai, and the rest, I’m not sure. I’d like to visit all of ’em eventually.

    Oh, and thanks for the compliments, everybody!
