ParticipantHe’s not a farker, is he? If he is, he could KILL every single astro contest we have, even if/when I get access to the 10 meter class scopes. I’d kinda like to see that, actually.

ParticipantYEEEEES, the Eddie! I REALLY want to see one, and considering I have something like 5 to 6 years here, I might get to see one or even two if I’m lucky.
Additional thought: Parking in Haleiwa ain’t so bad. You can get Matsumoto shave ice for the walk.

ParticipantSeriously, though, how are things at your new digs? Settled in and enjoying life?
Pretty darn great, being a grad student is awesome, and being here is doubly so. Basically, winter here just means bigger waves and better surfing. Can’t wait to get out to the north shore in December to see some of the big surfing competitions.
Ahem. Sorry for the threadjack. I would certainly support doing the Hootenany as an annual theme. It would be nice if we could space it evenly with the other perennials (e.g. farktography anniversary, the holidays, seasonal themes, etc.).

Participant+1, anytime.
What is this ‘winter’ you all keep talking about?Plamadude30k
ParticipantWhat is this *autumn* you speak of? I’m pretty sure it’s still summer here.
Beautiful pics, by the way :P.Plamadude30k
ParticipantIs the sun a viable sphere for this contest?
Plamadude30k
ParticipantI’m going to sit this one out-I got nothin’. There’s some pretty good shots this week, too. Good luck everyone!
Plamadude30k
ParticipantDepends where on the sky you were pointing when this was taken. Was the sun directly behind you (or maybe directly behind and a little to the left?)

ParticipantThat’s really cool, Olavf. I also like #4-great shot.

ParticipantAs CISS says, spot metering is very useful. In order to really use it properly, you should understand Ansel Adams’ zone system (and in this case, the complementary/similar digital zone system). The basics can be found here:
http://dpanswers.com/content/tech_zonesystem.php
and more with google. I thought this was the coolest thing ever, especially because of my extensive experience with silicon sensors-knowing how they work is actually helpful here.As for spot metering on the D3100, I’m not entirely sure if you have the button, but on my D7000 it’s just to the back and left of the shutter release/power switch and next to the exposure compensation button. Looking at nikon’s (very low res) images of the D3100, it looks like it’s in the same place.

Participant…set your camera on the lowest iso and tightest aperture. put your lens cap on. set exposure to bulb. tape down your shutter button, line up your shot, remove lenscap, count a few seconds, replace lenscap, line up second frame, remove lenscap, count a few seconds, replace lenscap, release shutter button. tada.
I did exactly this for one of my images in the “A Show of Hands” contest. It works, but it’s tricky to get right.

ParticipantYes, in fact, changing white balance was the first thing I tried. However, there are two problems with this:
1) Since the camera is measuring white balance slightly before it takes the photo and the color temperature of the light is changing, you’re seeing a different white point in the photo than is measured (at least this is how I understand it. I could be wrong).
2) The florescent WB setting is for the *average across the whole frame* spectrum of fluorescents. If you happen to catch it just right in the cycle, the color temperature (and therefore emitted spectrum) is completely different, but not across the whole tube. There is a differential change in emission, so you get the banding, which in camera terms means that WB is not even constant across a single frame, much less two adjacent frames. The comments concluded exactly what I did; sync shutter speed to a whole cycle or integer number of cycles, which in the US means using 1/30 s, 1/60 s, or 1/120s exposures, and in Europe means 1/25, 1/50, 1/100 s.

ParticipantUsually (but definitely not always), the best Nikon lenses have the big gold N on them, but that just stands for “Nano-crystal coat.” There’s not a universal delineation of the best Nikkor lenses as far as I know.

ParticipantThe pictures I have seen out of my friends’ 5D Mark II with the 70-200L f2.8 II and the 1.4x III are amazing.
He says as he posts amazing pics already. How can you get MORE amazing? The universe would implode. I should know, I have a degree in physics, after all.

ParticipantKotters sounds fine to me.
