    Could be that one of the rugrat’s pulled the plug again, but I noticed this morning that there was an “out of memory error”, so you never know. I’ll have to put a call into the corporate HQ and see what’s going on.

    what is this “cross-process” of which you speak? Is that when you take your Provia into an autolab and they process it as if it was Reala?

    Oh, and if that’s what Elsinore tossed on the cutting room floor well, crap. Nice shot. grumble, grumble, grumble

    Ummm

    so

    what exactly is a “Dokken”?

    I advise to not go with the last definition from Urban Dictionary.

    Thanx for the tips and welconing comments everyone! …and I am shooting alot!, my first couple of days out, I’ve shot well over 1000 pics with 3 or 4 shots out of that bunch that I actually think are worth printing. I hope this ratio changes over time with practice 🙂

    One of the best photogs I know (from the meat world) put together a nice book of his fine-art photographs. Maybe 30 of them. When he was asked how many photos he took to cull down to these he answered a very understated “about forty thousand”.

    My preferred shooting mode is Av (aperture priority). I’d suggested moving the dial to Av or Tv and playing there for a bit. Get the feel of the inverse relationship between aperture and shutter speed, and figure out what happens to the same subject with you move through shutter speeds (or aperture values). My big-book-of-slides contains many examples of the same subject with different aperture values.

    Thanks everybody. I don’t know what an “elite farktographer” is but it sounds cool.

    So what did I win?

    /kidding

    I don’t know what an “elite farktographer” is either and I’ve been here forever. As far as I’m concerned, we are just a bunch of farkers sharing photos and having a lil’ fun. 😉

    You win the respect of your fellow farktographers! Yay! 😀

    I think I may have been the instigator for the “Elite” moniker. Here’s the most recent log entry from the FSM:

    Active = 115 Total = 74 Elite = 35 Ultra = 14

    if you search this forum, you’ll probably find an earlier post somewhere that discusses the levels in a bit more details, but….

    In putting together the FSM, I needed a way to measure participation and I came up with “Active”. Taking a key from Fark, I figured there are also “Total” and “Ultra”. I needed something inbetween them and came up with “Elite”.

    The measures really have nothing to do with how many topX finishes one gets; they measure participation. You are “active” if you have 10 or more vote-getting entries and the number of entries you have exceeds the 1/2 number of contests you could have possibly entered since you first joined farktography (or something like that). The other levels ratchet up a bit. The only place they are visible on the FSM is in the “Greatest Averages” reports (band-shading corresponds to level) but they may make it to the Portfolio meta-data section some day. Diggin will get there very soon if current trends continue.

    Should someone desire to create a different definition of “Elite” and publish a ranking, I certainly won’t stand in their way.

    You wanna talk about losing self-worth in farktography? I didn’t even crack the top 3 in the stapler themed contest. Ever since I’ve just been trying to get the courage up to kill myself.

    Man-up, Nancy Boy, your photography/mania inspired that theme. You’re doing just fine.

    🙂

    A thought might be to take the “winner” of the farktography contest and submit that as a photoshop contest. Who knows – I might just be hallucinating this early on a Friday (check local listings)

    That’s pretty much what we tried last time with the Focus People Focus contest. Didn’t work out too well (good idea, poor execution).

    The proposed “same theme for both Farktography and Photoshop” is an attempt to actually have a successful crossover. However, I’d really like to see the “‘shop the winning Farktograph” approach succeed someday since that was my original proposal way back in March 06.

    I supposed if I downscaled in steps rather than in one large jump, there might be less of that, but I haven’t tested that out much.

    I’m a firm believer in the downsample-by-steps approach.

    yeah, I thought about maintaining the plastic coating for just that reason, but decided against it. I almost replaced the box but would up just taking off the top couple of layers of the addresses. The plastic around the corners and the sides is intact. Maybe the box will become more and more dachshund-shaped over the next 20 mailings or so.

    {Elsinore points out some discrepancies}

    Those inconsistencies are indeed part of the behind-the-scenes goo. I need to resync the “Extract, Transform and Load” part with the “Generate Reports” part. When you get a portfolio, you are querying the DB right now and you get the most recent data. When you view a Report, you get the view of the data when the report was generated (timestamped on the bottom). Currently, they are out-of-sync.

    or maybe send it back west to millera9?

    That would work well. millera9, send me your mailing address and I’ll get it out to you on Monday. (email in profile)
