I’m getting closer – the Participation Profiles are back (and slightly improved!) and now it is a “simple” matter of making sure everything else is too.

Doubtful for tonight, but maybe I can squeeze some time in in the next week.

    Head-scratcher, that one was.

    Good news and bad news.

Bad news is that the reports still are not working, but I’m slowly getting to the bottom of it. If you try to view a Participation Portfolio, you won’t get a null pointer exception anymore, so that’s progress. You won’t get anything useful, but…

Good news is that the “extract, transform and load” side of the FSM is working just fine. The HDR data is being extracted from Fark.com, stats and thumbnails are being generated and everything is being stored in the DB. So the data is intact.

    Ow.

I briefly looked at the member list and don’t see how to get it to say “page 1 of 3” (or whatever). But I’m just the associate bottlewasher here at FT.net.

Not exactly a list of “runaway entries”, but here’s a list of the top-10 entries that captured the biggest percentage of total votes per contest…evar (except for the first three contests (I don’t really trust those stats (I’ve been meaning to do something about that sometime))):

Looks like chakalakasp takes another top-spot. I’ll probably have to deploy this report someday.

Why is this not a “runaway entries” list? I think that a runaway need to stand out from all other entries. By looking at the percentage of total votes, we don’t quite get a single runaway (ref EC‘s and schnee‘s entries (for one example) in the above table – same contestid).

(and farkit on trying to nicely align the farking tables in farking bbCode)

mikemikeb: He also did respond in the thread that the current pic wasn’t taken until this summer, while the abstraction contest was last year.

Indeed he did so respond. Which means that he have a very distinctive style and knows what works.

Aroo? Try hitting shift+reload, that sounds cached.

Obviously, I’m an idiot. Things work fine after clearing the cache.

I think the issue is that “farktography.net” != “www.farktography.net” as far as DNS is concerned. My old bookmark pointed to “farktography.net”, which contains the “We’re down but go checkout the forums” page that veruca(?) put up a while back.

CaptainJim – that is priceless! Forget the contest: you’re this thread’s winner!

If that is true then I leave you with a Fark favorite “The Kiss”

I remember back in the woolly-and-wild days of the Web, someone had a Lesbian Barbie website with similar photos. What that you, CaptainJim? IIRC, Mattel threatened lawsuits and made that site go away.

There is nothing wrong with Photobucket. I have removed those photos from my account. The only photos of mine that you still see up after a contest are the ones I have on Flickr.

Exactly. GW, as the artist, has control over her portfolio. She doesn’t have to petition the FSM to take down an entry. mikemikeb chooses, as the artist, to keep the images on display. Artistic control. That’s one reason why the FSM doesn’t store images.

(Note that broken links are not isolated to the FSM’s portfolio pages. If someone viewed the Fark.com contest thread, those links would appear broken as well)

P.S. I have an additional thing or two to say about possible cheating by exploiting broken links.

I think I need a corollary to my #2. “Cheating” is a harsh word. I’d bet that almost every instance of a rules violation is a mistake.

As and aside, LE gave me an idea on how to detect exact repeats by storing a hash of the image. Existing broken links represent a missed opportunity, and I don’t know when/if I’ll get around to doing it, but eh, “its just Farktography”.

Hmmm I’m wondering what impact having 2 weekly contests would have on stats for the FSM.

Thanks for thinking of the FSM – you’ll probably get an extra meatball on Pasta Day!

Impact is likely minimal – I’d have to make sure that the FSM doesn’t stop at the 1st contest it sees on the mainpage, but other than that, minimal. If the 2nd contest had a regular schedule, then I’d just have to turn on “Scrape on Sunday” (for example). If it was a random schedule, I’d have to sample the main page hourly 24/7/365 or something. Either is doable, and both are just new cron expressions.

Also, I suggest the idea given by schnee to automate the calling of the Farktography contest.

I just want to post my photos.

I’m pretty sure that MB‘s desire resonates in all of us.

The more automation we have, the more time we have for other things. The calling of the contest on Thursday nights could be automated somewhat quickly (but I have been spending a bit too much marital capital on the FSM recently) and that would free up veruca (or whomever) from having to manually call it. That calling of the contest could even auto-post to Fark the traditional “congrats and see you all next week” message. Big down side, auto-calling would not leave room for DQs – the FSM is very far from allowing easy overrides in a timely manner, and I’m not gonna sit at home on Thursday night to manually execute some SQL statements. To reiterate, the best place to handle rule violations is at Fark.com. The Photoshoppers do it that way, why can’t Farktography?

More on the automation trail – Auto-Boobies, SelfService-OBO-Overrides and even Auto-OBO-Posting. Wouldn’t those be neat? That last one really required authentication and authorization, so it timeframe is a bit out there.

    Uuuuh — ahem

Hmm…I do believe there’s a bug in the Contest Contour(tm) for that contest. Sigh….

btw, I don’t know your process for handling OBO entries (other than I know it involves some level of manual input), but in case you missed it in the entries this week, I just wanted to note I had one OBO jhbweb.

Just pop over here and follow the directions. I’ll try to get the OBOs updated this weekend.
