I hope that didn’t sound racist. I didn’t intend it as such.

Which of these says “black”, is a good (enough) photo for #3, and follows the spirit of the theme?

That last one is a selfie after I ran face-first into the top of my niece’s head. 🙁

I would go with cemetery. Gary is cool, but I don’t know if you want Black Guy as your subject. I had a similar one that I chose not to use for that reason.

Saw this in TFD and thought I’d post it here. unfreakable posted:

Hey everybody, just a heads-up that we’re doing some security upgrades tonight. Most of you won’t notice anything, but a byproduct may be that some of you get logged out and need to log back in. It won’t keep you from logging back in, so it doesn’t mean anything, but if you’re concerned then send us a note through Farkback so that we have a ticket item for it. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

I like the first one, too.

Anybody want to throw an opinion at which of these two should be included?

Glad you made it back before voting-enabled time, Kestrana. My resize is gone.

Also glad to see Soosh is OK. After his conspicuous absence from Old Man Winter, I was a bit worried.

    Here’s my b-sides for this week – http://www.flickr.com/photos/42385982@N06/sets/72157626007121333/

    hey, thanks.

Old Man Winter knocked me on my ass for about 9 days with the flu. I didn’t even know it was Wednesday until late in the day Friday or so.

I’ve made scans of wildflower arrangements, and I would consider them photographs. I certainly wasn’t copying documents.

So have you also changed your mind officially? In the original scanner discussion thread, you’d said,

I think you get a different thing with a scanner than with a camera. I’ve done scanner art, it’s awesome with say a whole bunch of mixed wildflowers. but I don’t know that it’s photography. maybe it is. I’m honestly not sure.

Looking through the original discussion, I’d really gotten caught up on the fact that the scanner is making what amounts to be thousands of exposure slices then assembling them into what I figured was akin to a stacked exposure. Now I’m not so sure that analogy is entirely accurate. There was also the discussion of whether scanner images are more photograms vs photographs. But I’m not sure photograms would violate the spirit of Farktography, really. Just some more food for thought…

yeah, I was on the fence, but the more I think about it, why the hell not. You could get the same effect by laying stuff on a sheet of glass and photographing from underneath, so it’s not like you would have to have a scanner to create a similar image. I don’t have any problem with the fact that a scanner is mechanically reading the data differently. That seems to be more like a distinction that could be made between digital and analog, in a way.

I’ve wanted to switch to carbon fiber tripods, mainly because I hate handling metal ones in sub-freezing temperatures.

I worry that they’d be stable enough in windy conditions, though. I’m not the type who’ll do the bag of stones hung from the center tube for stability.

hey Elsinore, there’s a Demotivationals poster posted in the thread. Don’t know if you want to remove it or not.

    I could learn from you.

Wow, that’s flattering coming from you, but I seriously doubt it. It’s basically the same technique you used for your Kodachrome shot (which came out really well, BTW) and that U-Man used for his psychedelic plastic fork shot back in Forktography.

The only real trick was creating the artwork transparency. I used MS Expression Design, but Illustrator or any other vector graphics app would also work. From there, I laser printed it onto some transparency film I’ve had lying around for 10+ years from when I had to teach a class in a room that still used an overhead projector. I had to run it through twice to get it dark enough and fortunately my old printer had good enough registration that I didn’t get an offset image.

Check out my bees for alternate backgrounds. I almost went with the purple one so I could use the “with a taste of Purple Haze” byline.

Having said all that, if you do have any questions about it, ask away.

My original idea with this one was to have a completely transparent six, shine a light thru it and then reflect it off a couple of mirrors to invert it horizontally and vertically so that it turned into a 9, but I couldn’t get that to come out decently.

That was really spectacular. I mean really.

I was here early, but stopped for a while, and then came back. and I’ve had some breaks since then. Cool stats. I wish I knew how to comb data like that to get that sort of thing.

My first SLR was also a K1000. Man that thing was sweet. I didn’t realize what a great camera it was at the time and just bought it because I was attracted to the way it looked and the non-electronic aspects of it. Then the pictures were just spectacular.

I pawned it during a lean time in college, and regretted it ever since.
