ParticipantFor example, would shooting a car from the side, in thirds, not fit? But, if you took a shot from the front, then maybe a tire and then a rear view, would that be ok?
I guess one things that’s confusing me is the term ‘making it whole’, does that mean show the whole thing or a ‘whole as a concept’?
Correct. Splitting the car into three panels isn’t what I have in mind. Three parts that show the ‘personality’ of the car or ‘whole as a concept’ is right on. Or, two parts and then a wider view of the whole subject could work.
For example, a cheerleader could be shown as a close-up of school logo face paint, and hands holding pom-poms, and a wider angle of the whole subject cheering.

ParticipantJust how closely are we going to call the “clearly show it was at the fair” thing? This summer, I spent a hot humid evening at the fair with my girls (Mom was smart and stayed home :)) and brought a Canon and a 50 mm. I took some portraits of the carnies. With some, you can’t tell at all that I am at the fair. With others, you can sort of tell but it isn’t clear.
Would a carnie portrait with blurred neon be OK? Like this – http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/carnie_3822t.jpg
How about a carnie with an essentially featureless setting? Like this – http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/carnie_3656c.jpg

ParticipantThanks for the input so far. I’m letting this percolate a bit longer. Further input is welcome.

ParticipantI’m open to suggestions for this one.
As Kestrana points out, this guy ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/theblackstar/sets/72157626117942754/ ) was the inspiration for my theme suggestion. I initially envisioned all portrait type triptychs with vertical or horizontal panels with each panel containing a part of the whole.
After my brain was primed to recognize triptychs, I began to see them all over the place. Many of the trip’s I found and like are of inanimate things. And many use a different arrangement of the panels.
For example –

http://www.flickr.com/photos/andersdenkend/2854049219/lightbox/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/craigwk/4274284035/lightbox/I do not want to include trip’s like the following because I want to push our community (myself included) toward something new. I don’t want to be able search the files and throw three photos of somebody into one triptych.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/deej13/4205828376/lightbox/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dannybeattie/5540182316/lightbox/I also want to avoid this type – which seems to be a single photo cut into three panels.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chibear89/4892537432/lightbox/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/parlicoot/379837885/lightbox/However, I think these might fit in an acceptable grey-zone. They show three distinctly different parts of a whole.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/67028238@N05/6214141277/lightbox/ (maybe)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37308682@N02/4613438424/lightbox/So. Where I’m at after that session of ‘thinking out loud’ is here…the triptych should have three panels showing different parts of something that together show us the whole. I think I want to include inanimate objects.
I understand that too many or too fuzzy boundaries can lead to problems. We have time to tweak this one. What do you guys think?

ParticipantDifficulty – The subject must be alive.
woah
Yeah, I can see where that might be a game-changer for you 😆
That’s funny stuff right there.

ParticipantBTW, this is my front yard. Mrs. U-Man and I made these YEARS ago and just broke ’em out again. Add fog machine and a green flood light for extra spooky effects.
/I know. Hugh Jass is the pinnacle of humor. 🙂

ParticipantCan haz moar themes pleez?
Kestrana, is there a way to know what themes are coming up by looking at the Hopper?

Oh uh, yeah sorry, that’s my fault. 😳 Meant to get them up earlier this week. Anything in the Hopper will be scheduled, so feel free to shoot for anything in there. I’ll get some more themes up by this evening.
No prob. Thanks for the next two weeks. I have a call week coming up and time gets short and I’m frequently cranky and uninspired so I wanted to get a head start.

ParticipantI think I took the pity vote (if no one knew who was in that box it wouldn’t have been so memorable and UMan technically has the lead.
gambitsgirl, don’t worry about it, your lead is still earned. Oftentimes, the story behind the shot is an integral part of its appeal. I can recall off the top of my head at least two other times where the details of the shot contributed strongly to its success – rav‘s Dirty Pictures win (where we needed to know that it was the aftermath of a dam break) and U-Man‘s Day in the Life win where his conversation with the newspaper lady set the tone of the shot. And I’m sure there have been many others.
The details you provided for it add poignancy and personalize it, neither of which are bad things.
GG, no worries. While a part of me had the same thought/reaction you describe, it is only a small part. Just like (Be)CauseISaidSo mentioned, I definitely recognize that my newspaper lady did well because of the story I provided. I already had the same thought earlier today – before I read these comments. We could do away with all text and titles (and we have for certain themes) but that would have its own negative effects.
Photography as art should evoke emotion. Your entry certainly does that. If some of us get a glimpse of what you went through and hug our spouse or kids or friend extra tight today…well then…that would be good.

ParticipantI agree with the baby grave comments. In local Springdale cemetery they have this horrible name for the area where babies are buried. It creeps me out. Plus, WTF is coming out of the sheep’s belly?

ParticipantKestrana: Got it
U-Man: Love the lens flare shot! did you have a reflector or something to light the statue’s camera-facing side?
And to GG on the follow up question.
I drove around this big old cemetery in town; stopping here and there for photos. I saw this statue and went over to take pics. I got a few shots from her front and then went around to see what would happen if I peeked out from the shadow (btw – I do that a lot. It’s a go-to move for me. What can I say? I like it. 🙂 ) Well, I then noticed that she had a gap at her elbow that the sun went through. I took several pics that looked like this – http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/peopleplaces/No-Flash_0019.jpg – and then I walked back to the car for a flash. I set the flash on manual 1/16 or 1/32 power, popped a diffuser over it, and then used manual f/22 etc. on the camera.

ParticipantWelcome to the forum gambitsgirl. I appreciate the courage it takes to share your story with an audience like Fark. I hope, however emotional the shoot was, there was an element of catharsis too.
Thank you. This is my third week entering and when I got to this one I went “WTF really”? but I’m known for my dark humor. A little while after he died there was a TF thread “Where do you and your SO sleep” and I said “I’m sleep in the bed and he’s in the china cabinet”. It took a few posts but there was a general “holy shit’ laugh. It did help and I’m sure his mom will want a print of this and the kids were pretty happy with it too.
…and I said “I’m sleeping in the bed and he’s in the china cabinet”…
I haven’t been through the death of an immediate family member and I have no idea how I will react. But I hope that at least some of the time I will act like this. I’m positive that if my wife passed away, she’d be cool with my taking pictures.
And welcome. Stick around. There are some good people here.

f/22 for starring the sun + on-camera flash to expose the statue
http://photos.imageevent.com/ulle17/fark/Springdale_0020.jpg3rd one (sun flare) wins it for me.

I agree,
Lens Flare = most votes
But I like the first one best personally though, it’s a beautiful shot.
Thanks for the input. My wife picked that one too.
I almost chose this one instead of the ‘Anderson’ headstones. 25 sec exposure, light the front with an LED flashlight for 5-10 sec, run behind headstone and make some back-light the same way. I did the peeking out version sort of as a whim and didn’t like it on the camera. After getting home and seeing it on a monitor I thought I could make it work with a few more tries. But then I ran out of time and the skies got cloudy.
