ParticipantOne of the challenges for me this week is to decide what level of detail to include in the images to balance the “in focus” subject matter and the “bokeh” elements of the photo. It’s interesting that the post-capture work makes such a difference this time.
I agree. I looked at your pics and kept saying, “Well, I like it that way, too.”
No help here. 🙁

ParticipantThe way I read the description, “Show us shallow depth of field.”, it seems to me that images with a shallow depth of field is what you are going for, not that the out of focus part contributes to the image.
So it seems to me there are 2 things: to qualify for this contest, the image should show a shallow DOF, and that is it. Then if the image uses the bokeh in an interesting way it might get more votes, right?
Exactly. It might get more votes because there is a good chance that it will be a more pleasing photo.
I spent most of my photo time for this theme using a 100 mm macro. I have a bunch of pics with very narrow/shallow/skinny DoF. Like, the bugs eyes are in focus and the rest of it isn’t. But I didn’t pay attention to bokeh. The out-of-focus parts of my pics are pretty boring. I’m sort of regretting that right now as I’m packing and travelling over the next couple of days. What I’d like to try (maybe Wednesday) is less macro and more bokeh. This pertains to your comment too, justkat.
And just for shiats and giggles, does this one also qualify? Thought maybe the “object” was too big for the premise…
From my recent experience, too much macro can get in the way of good bokeh. I’d like to try a bigger subject with a nice blur to the background. Like a portrait. Someting like this, but with a bit shallower DoF.

We’ll see what happens over the next few days….

ParticipantI concur with Elsinore’s comment. The initial idea for this theme was, and still is, shallow depth of field. The title may be a bit misleading, but I think it is OK. As E said, the out of focus parts should add to the overall effect of the photo.
I’m pleased that this theme is pushing at least a few farktogs (myself included) to think about shallow DoF and broaden their skills.

ParticipantI don’t usually pay any attention to internet ass-hats but that last comment by vert0 kinda irked me.

ParticipantCongrats on your photos tonight. Extremely well done shots.
Thanks soosh. Although I think that I’d rather eat over at your place.
I agree with many of the comments in the thread. Those pics did make me hungry. 🙂

ParticipantI totally agree. Comedy is plastic snakes in the cereal bowl.
You got a problem with plastic reptiles in the cereal?

ParticipantSoosh, now that is the kind of stuff that if I were to forward it to anyone I knew, they would say, “Where the HELL do you find this shit?”.
dude’s a critically acclaimed film maker and one of my heroes.
I wrote that poorly. I watched the whole clip and thoroughly enjoyed it. I just think that, uh, normal people would look at it as a bit out there. 🙂
/can’t get that G. Washington song out of my head….

ParticipantI guess staplers would be right out, though.
And the count shall be three…

ParticipantIs it okay if part of the meal is on a fork, spoon, stapler, knife, chopstick etc?

Participant(this is putting me in mind of that George Washington song)
Never heard that before. That’s messed up in a beautiful way.
‘Hey man, I heard he has, like, 30……” 🙂

ParticipantXenPix, don’t worry about offending anyone. Like me. It was just an idea that came to mind. I don’t have any candy pics lined up to use or anything like that. Whatever you decide is cool.

ParticipantI had to glue the mandible to the skull.
Found out that carpenter’s glue is not fire resistant.Wow, that is just amazing. That deserves to win this contest.
Thanks. As you can tell, it was a lucky shot. Who could plan for melting glue?

ParticipantEls, please votify my one safe (extinguished) entry.

ParticipantI’ve never seen a museum exhibit on fire. But it’s in the realm of possibility, so knock yourself out, eh?
Thank you for being flexible. Life seemed to get in the way of photgraphy recently.
/If flexing the rules too much causes any strife, feel free to pull them at any time.
