A – not offended. They’re nice pics for still life/single subject.

I think one thing I need is a way to set up a background so the rest of my house doesn’t show up in shots 😛

B – This is why garage sales we’re invented. While you could go out and spend some money on a “white box” (and no doubt, if you hang around here long enough, you will), you can also get away with a white sheet and portable clothing rack. You’re out about $2 and you can now shoot with a white back drop. A few more quarters will get you a variety of backdrops.

Spend a little to figure out how much you may or may not use the stuff that costs real money. If you’ll use it, then spend it. But I’ve learned to never shell out “real” dough until I’ve done some cost/benefit analysis.

    YMMV

No. I can’t. One’s HP, one’s Dell. Both use same cord type into the “charger box”, but each has its own charger box, and I’ve used 3 different wall-to-charger-box cords.

I just started a thread over here: http://farktography.net/index.php?module=forum&file=viewtopic&t=3891 with a question that’s VERY important to me, and has a bit of urgency (and relevance to the fact that today’s contest day).

Any/all help will be appreciated mightily.

All are nice, but given how forced the smile looks in Pick #1, I’d go with #2 (especially if you ‘shop out the pipe). #3’s got its charms as well.

I’d say you did well… very well.

I totally understand. If it wasn’t that I have a mortgage and the dogs and cats gotta eat, I’d have quit this year. My job is a soul-less slog as well, but I do hope next year I’ll be able to get back to the parts I love (like not spending 50% of my time on class control and having students that actually give a shit.)

I do hope you get either/both jobs, as you will find a way to make good art out of boring templates. You’re too creative not to. Look at the ‘shopped backgrounds… what can you do with them? How can you turn a green-screen shoot into something at least slightly more interesting? Can you pose for specific backdrops?
Just curious (not Curious)… best of luck!

(I’d take a paying job behind the lens over food stamps any day… even if it was shooting school pictures.)

    ’04 Wrangler.

    4WD 6cyl Standard. No modifications.

Awesome for winter commuting and dirt roads. Haven’t had too much opportunity to go real off-roading, but when the sun is out, the temps are up and the top is down, it’s the best damn car out there to drive. I had a convertible LeBaron before this one, and there is NO competition. This thing is 100x more fun.

Not only will I never own another vehicle until I am too broken and decayed to climb in it, but I don’t plan on buying one of the new styles… too wide, and the engine’s all covered in plastic underneath… hard to do any of your own maintenance. When/if this one goes the way of the buffalo, I’ll be buying another out-of-date fun-mobile.

If trees are in, this will make life WAY easier…. nearly froze my fingers off stopping twice this morning to shoot a a statue and a sculpture. Tree silhouettes I got plenty of.
Granted, I was biking at the time, so there wasn’t any chance of me warming up anyway, but having to unglove twice didn’t help at all…

As as Jeep driver myself, the biggest challenge to shooting one is getting someplace cool. But then, once you get there you need to know what to expect and how to make the shot look good. Therefore, forget about cool environment and just work on cool angles and just practice practice practice.
I’m only getting somewhat better, but I’ve been practicing my ass off. I majored in photography in high school, so I returned to the hobby with a bunch of pre-set skills and ideas, but digital is so much better than film when it comes to practicing, I am kind of looking forward to finishing off my old film at some point.
Take your camera everywhere with you. Shoot the same thing over and over again under different lighting and weather conditions. Shoot people whether you want to or not. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable pulling out your camera in unusual situations. But shoot shoot shoot.
I don’t think I’ll ever be able to show off more than 2-3% of what I’ve captured, but that 2-3% is worth showing off (imho, others may disagree).

Your shot above is lovely, and definitely illustrates that you are not a noob.

Welcome to the addiction. I’ve been sober, ummmm, eight hours now.

Been about 25 minutes for me. Stopped to get some sunrise and silhouette pics on my way to work.

And Wilkommen to our Amish friend

Maybe 2 years isn’t enough time to have too large a collection, but I have all my Farktography shots in a single folder. They’ve been re-sized and re-named, so doing a Ctrl-F isn’t possible, but if I wonder, I can always run through the folder and see if something looks familiar. So far, I’ve only almost done this once. Which irritated me, because the shot was so much better for the second contest. Oh well… once Spring really hits, I’ll go back and re-shoot it a few times so I can use it in the future.

New question: I’m getting pics ready (thanx Elsinore for getting us so far ahead!) because I need to send my camera in for annual servicing, and I need to make the jones as small as possible. Anyway, I really like this pic, but am worried about its quality (it was shot with the cheap-o Polaroid):

Anyone got an opinion about its potential in a contest? I’ve got a couple second choices if that one’s just too lousy.

    Thanx for input.

The way I envisioned it is you should own or use the object, or at least have use of it regularly. Old cars fit, buildings not so much, unless it was like a workshop or something along those lines.

OK. Thanx. Now at least I’ve got a direction to go in.

So do the things we shoot have to be ours, or do old buildings and/or cars work as well?

It’s not like we don’t have antiques, I just have to decide what to shoot and how… access to my archives would give me more flexibility.

    Nice shot!

    Where is “Surprise, VA”?

I noticed the Flickr note to the right of it… seems like we have similar cameras… I bet you have nicer glass than I do though… (we’re at under 2 years for debt pay-off… I am SOOOO getting at least 1 sweet sweet lens to celebrate)
