Anyone near the Chattanooga, TN area? 😛

Thanks for the warm welcomes btw 🙂

Yep. I’m a native Georgian but have been in Knoxville for the past 14 years.

I have a feeling the shade may change a bit – they’re currently a bit more pale than mine, I think. But my wife has gorgeous brown eyes… so who knows?

Blue eyes are somewhat complex when it comes to DNA. I thought it was a simple dominant-recessive thing. But I read something a while back that the eye color is determined by genes in three different locations. I wish I could find the science quickly. So I’ll give you the anecdotal tale instead. My husband and his father have blue eyes. I have brown eyes and the kid has blue eyes. Her eyes were brighter when she was an infant than they are now but she’s five so I think the color is fixed now.

We have a couple of old Yashica’s from my father in law. I have no idea what they are or if they work. I haven’t messed around with them at all. I don’t have the patience or the time to go to film now. I wish I could get into using film because I think it would force me to be more patient and thoughtful. Maybe one day I will.

My husband’s teenaged neices got old rehabed 35mm Yashica’s for Christmas from a cousin who is a 70 year old photographer. I’m going to pass along our collection of lenses to them. I’d rather see them used by budding photo enthusiasts than sitting in my closet.

I’m sorry. My husband was unemployed for two years. That still seems weird typing that out. Two years. That’s what happens when an entire industry implodes. We were fortunate to make it through with only shitwrecked savings rather than a shitwrecked life. Anyway . . .

I agree that you should hold off on selling your most beloved gear until absolutely necessary. The impact to your sanity is worth something. Of course, your sanity won’t be worth much if you are homeless. What kind of timeframe are you looking at to get the lawsuit worked out? Is there any way to expedite it? Is a short term loan from family or close friend an option?

I bought this which got a lot of good review including some from farktographers.

Before I bought, I did a lot of research but found most of it over my head. I found an article with various lighting set ups depending on your budget which is how I decided what to buy.

There’s this online contest thingy where every week is a different theme, and you can post up to three pictures. It can be kind of tricky, I’m to understand, as the people who vote are notoriously fickle and such, but I think this year I’m going to try to participate with three pictures every week.

Funny that you mention this. I was thinking of making this my 2012 project. However, already I’m struggling to find content for the first contest of the year. Gah!

I got a basic studio light set up – flash stands with umbrellas and flashes.

I have tinkered with it but nothing to share yet.

I found this article to be helpful in terms of recommendations for equipment.

I like it! Did you find zenfolio easy to use / customize?

You have inspired me to give this a try when all the craziness of the holidays subsides.

The main photographer is a professional and he has photographed this event for years. He is allowed to invite 4 or 5 extra photogs to help out and he gives first dibs to his students to give them experience shooting a live event under difficult lighting. I think it is easier on him to corral the photos before we all scatter.

Lots of good advice. I knew you guys (and gals) would have good information.

sleeping, I have a flash bracket and a homemade flash handle. I’m not sure if I would rather use the bracket or a tripod.

ennui, I may not be able to scout the venue before hand but I will have some time before the show starts to get the lay of the land. I looked at pictures from last year’s event and many of them seem to have a yellowish cast. I plan on doing a custom white balance since I won’t be able to fix it after the fact.

Kestrana, thanks for the info. I didn’t know I could do that but I will tinker with it before the event. I also need to figure out the highest ISO I can use without getting a lot of noise. The D5000 does have a high ISO noise reduction feature that I have used before but I think I was shooting at 1250.

You bought your 7000 less than a year ago right? My 5000 came with a 5 year limited warranty. Might be worth giving Nikon a call/email.

Agree. I would give Nikon a call. I will give you the bad news, if you have to send it back to them to fix it will take at least two weeks and as many as six. The work on my external flash took two weeks, and the work on my D5000 took 6 weeks (had to get part from Japan). The good news is both repairs were free as they were covered under warranty even though the flash problem was user clumsiness.

I have used Shutterfly for calendars for several years. The beauty of having a small still photogenic child means that I can cheap out on gifts for parents and in laws. I have been pleased with their quality and options. Plus you can save several different formats so I don’t put my mother’s birthday on a calendar meant for my father and stepmother. You can usually find coupons and discounts this time of the year.

olavf, I have never used shutterfly for larger prints as we have a pretty good local shop for those but I am glad to have the info on their shipping.

I love this theme! I want to give it a big old bear hug!!

Agreed. I didn’t have time to do three for the contest but I will do more of these for my own benefit.

I have been thinking of putting a website together myself and am curious to see what you come up with. I am looking for something that is already set up but has cusomization options. I am not a programmer, and I don’t want to be a programmer. Some days, I’m struggling to be a photographer.

As far as drumming up business, several professionals I have talked to got started by volunteering their services in the circles they already travel – family reunion, office holiday party, kids sporting events and activities, etc. That puts your work in front of a variety of people. I have not done this yet because I think I need to have the website set up and business cards printed so that when I do meet people, I can send them somewhere other than my facebook fan page (with its 9 likes).

    Best of luck.
