ParticipantWhat is it a picture of? What is the subject? I don’t get it (which is not unusual). But most importantly, how can I get someone to pay me to take poorly composed pictures without a subject or anything of interest?

ParticipantI have taken a couple of photography classes in which we do practice shoots, and honestly, this is more helpful than any of the classroom stuff. The teacher lines up models of all ages and looks who are willing to spend an hour or two taking direction from a bunch of wanna be photogs. It can be a bit stressful with a bunch of folks crowding around a single model. However, it has been a great learning experience in how to communicate with someone you don’t know, getting them to pose the way you want, and coping with the unexpected. One lesson I learned is that “go stand over there” is a surprisingly good place to start with a model. At least they will adopt a natural pose and you can tweak from there.
I would suggest reaching out to your circle of friends, family, co-workers, etc. to find people willing to pose for free images. I have offered my services for free to friends to get more experience. I’m thinking about offering again soon since the people in the “married with kids” circle I run in are all looking for pictures to put on holiday cards.

Participant(now I have to go get some film so I can shoot the ashes doing something fun for the contest in 2 weeks. I think I’ve started my own little private meme).
Your snarky way of dealing with your pain reminds me of a friend. She started her own blog tribute to her brother by taking his ashes on a series of adventures.

ParticipantLooks like someone studied at the Terry Richardson school of bad lighting, harsh white backgrounds, and thinly veiled misogyny. I would post a link to his site but it appears to be in transition.

ParticipantWell after 3 months of thinking about it and researching, I finally pulled the trigger on a new tripod. Here is what I bought. Bonus is that I was able to buy it a our local photo printing shop – instant gratification.

Now I just need to find the time to take it out and test it.

ParticipantLots of good stuff this week (as usual). I love digitalfilmmaker’s entry. Even though you don’t see their faces, you can read the emotion from their body language. I love the detail of the long walkway in front of them. Lovely image.

Participant6 out of 10. I probably should have guessed the crappy pictures as SLR and the better ones as cell phone pics.

ParticipantAre gates or entrances to a graveyard fair game assuming you can tell that it is a graveyard.

ParticipantI read the headline and was prepared for the worst. It doesn’t help that I was looking at a website showcasing fauxtographers last night: blur, bad borders, strange spot color, bad props,….
Was it this one?

Because I was laughing at it recently. And then I made sure I didn’t make any of those mistakes with my friend’s kid, or my kid.

ParticipantAlso, I took olavf‘s advice and went back to photoshop with the first picture.

ParticipantI have talked to a couple of photographers who do newborn photography. The key to the sleeping malleable baby is their age. At about 7-14 days old is the optimum time. After that, they start developing their muscles and are not so easy to pose. This baby was 4 weeks old and had recently lost some hair and developed baby acne. Also, he was not at all interested in sleeping. The family had professional shots taken at 14 days and the baby was asleep in all of them.
Also, the heat is a good idea. The mom told me that the pro used a hair dryer to soothe the baby.

ParticipantIt’s 90 and sunny here. Dammit. We haven’t had rain in weeks. Everything is dried up and dying.
Also, I just saw male full frontal nudity on the Weather Channel. Dude dropped his pants behind the weather dude while he was broadcasting. Even in disaster, there is humor to be found.
NSFW link.

ParticipantOkay. I’ll leave it then. I had a hard enough time deciding on three.
