ParticipantEls, your rainbow-folder water shot is really cool. That’s going in my “Shots to Try” folder.

ParticipantCouple of bees and an alt-A here.

Participantrav, one of my shots has a reflection of the object but not the original object; I don’t think it’s all that creative, although the subject matter is pretty unusual. Perhaps you misread Kes‘s statement – the reflection itself has to be there, but not the object making the reflection.

ParticipantI agree with most of that, ennui, except for the part about zero interest. Would I ever entirely replace my DSLR with a mirrorless? Oh heck no. But, I’ve got a G12 P&S I carry to places where I either can’t or don’t want to take my DSLR and I think it’d be really awesome to be able to use the lenses I already own with a smaller body in some situations. I still couldn’t take it into concerts, though (well, maybe with a small pancake lens), which is the main reason I got the P&S.
It’s all moot for me anyway as with my recent upgrade, I’ll be buying new camera equipment anytime soon over my own dead body (as facilitated by my wife)!

ParticipantWell, that’s a good way to look at it, rav. And I think you’re talking about second curtain, right? As I understand it, there’s first curtain where the flash goes off right as the shutter opens and there’s second curtain where it goes off just before the shutter closes. Second curtain is usually better when there’s movement as the final image is nice and sharp and overrides whatever blur may have been deposited while the shutter was open.

ParticipantWishing you a positive outcome for your dad, rav. ennui said pretty much everything else to say in a very poignant and relevant way.

ParticipantThose are some seriously excellent shots with that 100mm macro, ‘Cuda. I’ll have to add that one to my list of want-to-haves.

ParticipantClouds came in Saturday night just in time to give us a little cooling and much needed (although still way too little) rain Sunday morning, so I’ll have to save these tips for the next show.

ParticipantNice lightning shots, all. caradoc, are you within the storm system itself when you’re shooting those? If so, you seem to be at about the same elevation as some of the things being hit by lightning – any concerns?
We get some pretty decent lightning storms here (moreso during spring than now, though); the problem is finding someplace decent to view them from outside the system.

ParticipantJust getting around to catching up on some of these older theads, so… rav, I think your shots turned out pretty good. It sounds to me like she was wanting an awful lot for free and didn’t even want to bother telling you exactly what she wanted, even though she apparently knew. I’m not sure you could’ve pleased someone like that no matter what.

ParticipantThat script looks like it could be converted to a Windows batch file pretty easily, assuming there are Windows versions of the tools you’re using. But what I really came here to say was, that’s a really cool shot; even more so in larger size.

ParticipantNot just the individual win, but the sweep with the combined win as well. Yep, rarified air indeed, Kes – congrats!

ParticipantYeah, a warranty is reassuring and used is always a gamble, so I can understand that. And you’re probably right about the car – it’s always something with those things.

Participantloki, have you considered a used camera? I was looking on eBay just a couple of weeks ago to see what price 30D’s are currently getting for insurance valuation purposes and was surprised that they’re going for less than $300; sometimes much less. It’s shy on the resolution (8.2MP) and doesn’t have live view, but I’ve been perfectly happy with my 30D. I’d sell you mine if I didn’t have thoughts of converting it to IR. If you could pick one up for a little more than $200, that’d still leave you with a decent chunk to throw at a car.

ParticipantMUCH higher ISOs, open the aperture up, keep exposure times to just below “star trailing.”
I’ll give that a try. I think the last time I shot meteors I set the ISO fairly low; the 30D starts getting noisy above 800. Star trailing is going to start about 30 secs, right?
