ParticipantThe starkness of the black & white works well on that first one, Kes.
Some bees (and a link to my A’s for those who just can’t wait) here.

ParticipantLove that tree bee, U-Man.

ParticipantContests open to TF at 8PM Eastern and to non-TF at midnight Eastern.

ParticipantSee, I could imagine an urban “landscape” that just screams desolation, something full of broken/empty/abandoned buildings with nary a soul in sight. None of mine are like that, but I’d argue that it fits “desolation.”
But as Yugoboy said, I don’t want to speak for Kes, so perhaps she’ll clarify for us.

ParticipantYeah, the “implied remoteness” was throwing me, too. I don’t know if mine necessarily imply remoteness, but they fit definitions 1, 2, and/or 3:
des?o?late
- barren or laid waste; devastated: a treeless, desolate landscape.
- deprived or destitute of inhabitants; deserted; uninhabited.
- solitary; lonely: a desolate place.
- having the feeling of being abandoned by friends or by hope; forlorn.
- dreary; dismal; gloomy: desolate prospects.

ParticipantWow, seriously?!? Is that really a one-shot more-or-less SOOC image? If so, I fully agree with your sentiments! Even if its manipulated, it’s still a cool shot.

Participant“Don’t look Ethel!”
//too late…
Wanna know how I know that you’re old? 😆
// Of course, the same applies to me as I got it right away. Well played, rav, well played.

ParticipantSo I’d assume that a RAW format couldn’t be adjusted, just converted to JPEG…correct?
That’s actually a question I had as well – what does SOOC mean when shooting RAW? Aside from adjusting curves (obviously a no-no for this contest), anything else that could be changed in post could also be set in-camera so that the JPEG SOOC would be the same as the post-processed JPEG converted from RAW.

ParticipantI take it that Fark.com is not keen on sharing anonymous voter data related to Farktography in some behind the scenes data conduit? [photo_id][random_voter_id][vote_state_or_count]
I’ve never heard of them doing anything like that and I’d be really surprised if they did, but I guess it couldn’t hurt to ask if anyone with a more direct link to Fark’s chain of command would like to do so. It sure would make scraping the contests a lot easier, as well as less prone to breakage when something in the layout changes.
A tangent to this topic…is there any way to keep the Fark names hidden until voting is complete?
From the Fark side of things, I’d guess that would fall into the “too much effort for a once-a-week thread” category as others have mentioned in regard to other Farktography-specific changes.
I could write a script similar to the one that adds Places to the voting results page that would hide usernames, but it would be strictly voluntary to use it and you’d have to divert your eyes before applying it as the names would be visible until then.

ParticipantThat seems to be the majority choice with 42% of the votes in the poll right now, Els, and to me it makes the most sense.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantThat’s an interesting idea, fluffybunny, but it couldn’t be implemented except at Fark itself. Our view of the contest pages doesn’t allow us to know if a single user has voted for the same entry as both Funny and Best. For example, if an entry shows up on both Best and Funny voting results pages with 1 vote, we can’t know if that’s the same voter or two different voters.

ParticipantSome great ideas here. My resolution last year was to try to shoot at least one entry per contest but that only lasted about 3 months before work more or less put an end to that.
CauseISaidSo
ParticipantThere’s a fairly regular Farktographer named “JenTheLibrarian” that’s in the UK, so I’d have to guess that you’ve got at least one over there, Farktographer. 😉

ParticipantDitto what you’ve all said. That’s really cool. I find “simple” mechanic solutions to analog problems fascinating.

ParticipantI never delete or edit my original RAW files. I’ll store the originals in a safety file, then copy them over into another folder to play with the copies before converting them to a webpage friendly format.
You probably don’t have to worry about editing the originals, at least when using Canon’s DPP on a RAW file. I don’t remember if you’re a Canonite or a Nikonian, but I’d guess that this also applies to Nikons and other software. DPP stores the changes separate from the actual RAW data (what they call a “recipe”) so that you can always go back to SOOC with just a ctrl-shift-Z. You can even store the recipe separate from the RAW file itself if desired so that it can be applied to multiple files.
