    Thanks for the info, LeicaLens.

I don’t have any old manual glass (that would be worth even messing with, anyway), so it’d have to be all new lenses for me.

I’m not much of a street/candid photography guy, but I do like amusement parks and cycle trips and I could see something like this being much better suited for those types of things. I toted my full-size dSLR, a couple of lenses and a tripod through most of Animal Kingdom and EPCOT in Disney World, much to the chagrin of my wife. (I believe her words were something like “Don’t expect me to carry any of that crap if you’re bringing it in!” 🙂 )

Some nice shots there. When my family did the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago (where my two “real” fish photos are from), there were signs everywhere saying “no flash photography.” Didn’t stop most of the people taking photos from using flash, but I followed it, which resulted in a lot of high ISO (noisy) pics and a few blurry ones where the dang fish moved during the long shutter.

Assuming you used flash on most of your shots, how did you prevent the flash reflection off the aquarium glass?

Quite the streak you’ve got going on there, kashari. Congrats!

I just got back from a cycle ride to check out the fall colors. Just barely starting to turn. “They” say we might not get much color this year because it was so hot this summer, so we’ll see.

Since it appears that you’ve all looked into the micro four-thirds platform fairly extensively, I have a couple of questions if you don’t mind:

    1) Are there any benefits to this platform aside from reduced size and weight (which are pretty nice benefits assuming photo quality is consistent with a “normal” dSLR)?

    2) Given that lens prices for this platform don’t appear to be much (if any) cheaper, which one of you clowns is going to explain to my wife that I need to buy a completely new set of lenses for this thing? 😆

    Thanks, Zero!

I was trying to come up with a good caption for #6 and you nailed it, but shouldn’t that be “It’s not a tooomah!” ? 🙂
The best I could come up with was something like “Scientific name: Herpus Derpus”, but I like yours better.

I thought my Finding Nemo pic would’ve gotten a better response. It’s colorful, a decent shot for how difficult it was (low light and long distance) and really, how often do you see a bike-powered manta ray? Almost has a steampunk vibe to me. Guess I shoulda listened to my first instincts and gone with the glowing moon jellies, but with all the talk about jellies here, I figured there would be plenty already.

Oh well, as we prove over and over each week, there’s no accounting for voter taste.

Interesting. I’m going to have to see one in person to get a feel for its size, though.

Any idea how the focal length of its lenses relate to a 35mm SLR?

This pike was caught by my daughter

Bah! That’s nothing. 😉 Here’s my daughter (from my first bee):

    Yes, she did catch it.

She’s a good bit older now and wasn’t particularly fond of my caption: “Captain Ahab prepares to release her great white whale” 🙂

    First, that’s really cool! Congrats!

I don’t have any immediate practical ideas, but I’ll throw out the first things that popped into my mind and maybe that’ll spur something else for you. The first thing I thought of was the cover to Manfred Mann’s Earth Band’s The Roaring Silence (the album with Blinded By The Light). I seem to remember the original cover being slightly different than that shown on Wikipedia, but I can’t find an image of that version and it’s quite possible my memory isn’t entirely accurate.

The second thing I thought of was Nipper. Maybe some kind of updated but retro version? Does that even still register as an icon to the kids these days?

I know both of those date me pretty badly and neither is practical to shoot, but those were the first two thoughts that popped into my head based on the title. It’s a long shot, but maybe they’ll trigger something more “hip” and practical for you.

Well, it’s looking like I’m going to have to sit this one out, as much as I hate how it’ll affect my stats :(. I have no usable archive shots and while I have a couple of ideas for new shots, I’m all out of stock on free time.

First, my photography “workload” shooting my son’s football games just doubled. He’s on the “B” team (they don’t call it that, but that’s what it is), which we’re perfectly happy with. He doesn’t have any NFL aspirations and gets more field time on the “B” squad. But he just got asked to play special teams on the “A” squad, so now I’ve got a game to shoot on Mondays AND Tuesdays.

But that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the real time sponge. I’m having to redo the flooring in a rental I have after the last tenant evidently used it as a kennel and surprise, surprise, laying 1100sq ft of vinyl plank and laminate flooring is taking a lot longer than I first thought it might. I don’t know why I still fall for that since almost every handyman project I’ve ever taclked has taken at least double my first estimates.

Anyway, good luck to everyone this week! Hopefully I’ll be back in time for the next one.

Thanks, all! That was actually a shot I took with the idea that I was going to use it in Farktography someday- I remember thinking, “I’ll bet there will be a classic Green color contest coming along any day now”.

I know I’m farily new around here, but that has to be the sign that one has truly become a farktographer. I just commented to my friend this week that I can’t see something “cool” or odd or really just photo-worthy now without wondering what contest theme I might be able to use it in…

    Oh, and congrats SilverStag!

*do* get UV filters for your lenses. If anything, they will help keep them from getting scratched, and I’ve heard of at least one instance where it saved the lens from being broken.

And as Rav said, play with the DPP (Digital Photo Professional) software that came with it. Shoot RAW, too.

First, congratulations! I’ve only had my DSLR for 3 years now, so the difference it made in my photos and the learning curve that came with it are both still fairly fresh in my mind.

As olav said, get UV filters. They’re cheap insurance. But at the same time, don’t go too cheap on them – no point in having decent glass if it’s being filtered through poor glass.

And as rav said and olavf reinforced, shoot in RAW. That was the mistake I made for the first few months. Even if you don’t learn to use DPP now, you’ll be glad later that you have RAW images if you ever want to edit any of them. The difference in what you can bring out with RAW vs JPEG is pretty vast.

I shoot in both RAW & JPEG so that I can immediately preview pics but have the better post-processing option should I want to do that. Of course it takes quite a bit more space on your memory card and limits the number of continuous shots you can take, so that’s the trade-off. If you must choose, until you’re confident that every shot will turn out perfect (let me know when that happens, ’cause I can’t see it happening for me!), choose RAW.

orionid and Curious, thanks much for reviewing the site. Really appreciate everyone’s time who took a look.

And Curious, don’t lose hope on your fantasy website. I’d been wanting to do mine for a long time, but it took a rare alignment of opportunity, motivation, and creative spark before it happened. I gotta tell ya, as a “code pecker” (what my engineer friend calls software developers :)), it was really pretty refreshing to create just for my own enjoyment again. Reminded me of why I got into it so many years ago.

mind out of gutter… mind out of gutter… mind out of gutter…

😆 When I first brought up this page, caradoc’s mother-thanking post was the first thing I saw, so taken out of context that was my first thought, too!

I had a quick look at your site…
    /btw, I liked your first firework b-side a lot

Thanks, LeicaLens, both for the site feedback and the firework shot comment. The last time I ran a firework shot (All Night Long), it did OK, not great, so I didn’t consider it too highly this time. As it’s looking now, perhaps that was a mistake (although all 3 of mine are doing “OK” so I can’t complain too much, I reckon.)
