U-Man: 2 – In HS, a teammate’s dad photographed our soccer matches. He developed the pics himself and printed them out as 8 x 10 glossy black and white prints. At the end of season banquet, we got to take our pics home. I still have mine.
That’s pretty cool of him and kinda the reason I do it. It gives all of the parents a chance to see or print shots of their kid in action that they otherwise wouldn’t be able to get.

U-Man: 3 – I briefly checked out your site using Firefox with Adblock. When I clicked a pic to enlarge, it popped-to-larger half off of the screen. I had to scroll to see all of it. I don’t know if that is normal, but I found it a bit odd.
First, thanks for looking. But yeah, that’s on my bug list. I think I’m going to have to switch to another popup implementation.

U-Man: heh – check out the mid 80’s shorts on number 11. 🙂
Ha! One might think that shorts being such a simple piece of garb wouldn’t be a good indicator of time period, but one would be wrong. See also NBA shorts from the ’70s. 🙂

Things in real life have been keeping me pretty busy lately, so I just wanted to drop in tonight and say “Hey!” to everybody.

U-Man, I’ll keep your dad in my prayers. Best wishes for a speedy recovery (and an abundance of patience for Mopsy!)

rav, I almost went out and shot something just like your string of green stoplights! Lack of time was the only thing that kept me from it. Great minds and all that, eh?

orionid, really like the soda can ‘a’ and peacock ‘b’. Also, pretty cool going on the hacks you’ve posted about lately.

One of the things that’s keeping me busy is that my youngest’s football season started. I always shoot the games and share the photos with the team parents, so I decided this year to take it up a notch and create my own website for it. While I was doing that, I went ahead and made it a place to host all of my farktography entries, too. If anyone cares to take a gander and give me feedback on it, it would be much appreciated. You can start with my bees page for this contest or here’s the home page.

Oh, and just to be upfront about it, I do have Google adsense running on it. (I really don’t think it’ll make any significant earnings; I’m just hoping maybe it’ll cover hosting costs.) If you have adblock, I’d be interested on hearing if it screws with the layout.

But I’m happy with my submissions.

Well, I gotta say I’m feeling pretty “meh” about my entries this week.

B’s here if anyone’s interested. I’d like to have used the stained glass casino ceiling, but when I asked myself if Joe Snapshot would’ve taken a picture of it, the answer came back as “possibly.”

U-Man, really like that rust pic.

Well, this is one contest where I won’t be F5’ing to the bitter end. 🙂 I’m off to get a head start on the holiday weekend.

Good luck to everyone and to those in the states, have a happy and safe Labor Day weekend!

I seem to have been having what was, at best, and intermittent issue.

I’ve noticed intermittent problems the last two contests. Sometimes red X’s and sometimes properly sized frames with no pics. I’ll keep an eye out this week and let you know if I see it again.

olavf, all three pics were just x’s, but clicking on them successfully brought up the large sizes.

It looks like the article may be publically accessible here: http://nutsvolts.texterity.com/nutsvolts/201009/?pg=68&pm=2&u1=friend

If that link doesn’t work or requires a log-in, PM me your email and I’ll send you the PDF version. I really like this magazine and don’t want to hurt its sales, so I don’t want to post it on a public site for everyone to grab, but I am willing to share it with the small group of friends here.

Like I said, this article just deals with installing CHDK and the Near Space column only runs every other month, so we’ll have a bit of a wait to get the next one. If I don’t remember, feel free to remind me for the next installment.

OK, talk about coincidental timing. The Near Space column writer for Nuts & Volts that we were talking about here has just started a series of articles on using CHDK to do weather balloon photography.

The article this month is mostly just about downloading and installing CHDK. The next article should have info about his experiences with it and photos from it. For the limited crowd that may be interested in this, let me know and I may be able to get you a PDF of the article(s).

Here’s more of what I’m talking about when I say “primitive”:

The ledge on the right side of the first photo is the one I’m standing on to take my 2nd entry pic. Like I said, one foot in the wrong direction is a fast ticket to an upclose and personal tour of the Colorado. And yes, I’m not ashamed to say I was hugging that rock pretty tightly in the 2nd photo. 😯

CauseISaidSo, what’s the road like to Toroweap? I’ve always wanted to go there, and the opportunity may present itself next year. I assume you camped there?

    Awesome shot.

    Thanks much!

Alas, we did not camp there. I’d love to go back and do it, though. We stayed in a campground close to the north rim (near where the big fire was a couple years later, this was 2004) and drove there one day, spent a few hours, had lunch and drove back. Of all the places I want to go back to after getting a DSLR, that’s #1 or 2.

This was in July. The road wasn’t too bad. It’s about 60 miles, but it will take you at least two hours. There are places where you could go 45-50 (but not many), and there were LOTS of places that were pretty severe washboards and you’d beat yourself to near death doing 20-25.

I took it in a 4WD Suburban without any problem. Didn’t require 4WD at all just getting to Toroweap, but I did use it briefly going to the place nearby (I want to say it was called Vulcan’s Throne.) It was pretty dry when we did it, but I could see 4WD coming in handy if it was wet or muddy.

And finally, if the opportunity even comes near your neighborhood, grab it! We spent about 4-5 hours there and there was exactly one other car that showed up the entire time (and they left after about an hour). You can see and “feel” the Grand Canyon like you can’t anywhere else (that I’ve been) – no guard rails, no crowds, no donkey trails and their leavings. The only man-made items are an outhouse, a picnic table, and 9 primitive campfire rings. Plus I think it’s supposed to be one of the only places on public land on the north rim where you can clearly see the Colorado.

My B’s here. As always, I welcome input on selection choices. I was pretty solid on my first two, but waffled back and forth between the Chicago pic, the silhouetted Liberty Island, and the Epcot heron/pond.

    Comments on other B’s:
rav: I think you made the right choices, although I may have gone with your first B over your last entry, depending on my mood at the time. I really like the red of the rocks there.
zincprincess: I like both of your B’s. If forced to choose, I may have run them in place of the first two, but it would be a difficult choice.
sleeping: I think you could’ve gotten some good mileage out of that IR shot. And the sunset is just gorgeous in that last B. Another set of tough decisions.
Kestrana and orionid: I’m not even going there! I thought I had difficult choices this week!

Ha! I resemble that term and I’m totally stealing it!

    longest post-theme threadjack
Well, we do seem to have run most everyone else out of the thread, so I guess we’re free to discuss whatever we want, eh?

    Poe’s Theorem of Evolution
See, I think that could be generalized even further from “natural selection” to just plain “cause and effect.” By removing or insulating the effects of choices, we’ve created a society where nobody has to take responsibility for their actions. I don’t want to get into politics, but this applies to helicopter parents, bank/corporate bailouts, and home loan bailouts where people bought way more than they should have.

    perfect for balloon photos
Yikes! Other than the price tag is right! They’re awfully proud of that little piece of circuitry, aren’t they? If I was to seriously get into something like this, I think I’d just buy the component pieces from Sparkfun and roll my own hardware, because playing with the hardware side of things would be at least half of the fun of it for me.

Regarding chutes, I don’t think I’ve seen the near space guy mention ever using a chute. I think I remember that he uses a streamer or two to slow the fall, but is it possible that the package just free falls after the balloon pops?

Some of the more recent budget-oriented things seem to be based around styrofoam beer-coolers and duct tape.
Yeah, I think he’s working with several high-school science classes now, so budget is probably a big factor.

‘Cause we all need to send a camera to an altitude of 28 miles.
But, but, … Are you saying we don’t? 🙁

    Buncha facts & figures…
Sounds like you’ve done a bit more research into it than I! I’ve just read the articles and mentally added it to my “to play with later” file. 🙂

My friends and relatives say I’m not allowed to give copies of this to their kids any more.

I’ve heard about that book. Is it actually any good? What ages does it target?
