I’ve been using this one for maybe the past year and have been happy with it… 2048X1152 (native 16:9). I was most impressed with the color, all of my other LCD monitors seemed to have poor contrast with reds… deep reds always appeared saturated. The extra resolution is nice for spreading out applications with child windows (gimp and krita especially) without resorting to plopping them off onto an adjacent desktop.

My one gripe is that it’s only a 23″ and my vision ain’t what it once was. If it weren’t for compiz/desktop zoom I’d be hunched in front of it trying to read the text in EVE.

Oh, and the built-in speakers suck, but they all do in my experience. Not that it matters, I’ve been piping sound out to a ganged home theater amp feeding a pair of maggies for years now.

ooh! So tell us, what software for stacking? Lots of detail, there…

    Zerene Stacker

Oh now that is nifty stuff (and I’m impressed that they were kind enough to port that over to linux in both 32 and 64bit variants…adding that to my list of wants).

    WHAR EXIF DATA, WHAR? 😉

Yeah, I’m a bit iffy on the wording myself, but it’s a bit complicated to reduce to a soundbite. There’s a great deal of variability inherent in the whole idea, but in the end I think the composer of the shot gets the credit, regardless of who presses the button.

This could make for a seriously strange theme, someday… “Images inadvertantly taken by the subject” or some such…

Anything I want to print is going to be “large”, I’m just not compositional enough to not depend on scale . I just put in an order for 4 prints at 15″X30″ and that’s the smallest I’ve ever done (there are flaws I’m trying to hide via reduction); but keep in mind that that’s my current direction and could change if I ever develop that thing called “an eye”…

What we need here is a some gifted coder with a farktography bent who wants to set up an online store… I’d drop some change off the profits for such a thing.

Check UFRaw, I used it before I, uh, acquired CS2 and Lightroom.

Forums being glitchy, here is the link

^seconds. If you want more control, lay hands on DCRAW (UFRAW is a front-end for it). My first step at the PC is drop my card in and type “ufraw-batch –out-type=tif –out-depth=16 *.CR2” and walk away til the developing is done. DCRAW allows just about any option you can think of for converting your RAW files to conventional formats when you need to adjust other factors. Taking the time to write a few scripts for DCRAW is something I really need to find time to play with more.

*edit: UFRAW allows you to pass a lot of command line options to DCRAW as well. If you’re not a syntaxophobe, it’s the fastest way to get an 8-gig card of RAWs developed. You can set temp, levels, sharpness, etc… you can even debayer if you have a need to (could be useful shooting IR).

Alternatively, a recognition sort of prize such as IDK, your winning picture and Fark handle appearing in the sidebar of Fark for the week would be a better reward to me than a free t-shirt.

That is a really good idea.

Pitch my tent in the nay-sayers’ camp. Once word gets around, this place may go from “Freindly Corner Coffee Shop” to “Super Wal-Mart”.

I learned all the techie stuff from diving into astrophotography (for which I give a resounding “meh” to myself). What I see here is a great deal of application, composition, and a willingness to engage in odd/different themes. I wonder sometimes why we don’t see more press from the farktography contests… there really is a lot of impressive work coming from the regulars here. I see less talent shown in a higher profile in so many other places.

If I ever get to toss a few back with some of the folks here, I’ll feel privileged. I might just die happy if I ever win a contest! 😆 For now, just call me “groupie”.

soosh, the fark-sized image would look like crap, but I’d still vote for that one twice if I could.

    That’s just gorgeous.

good lord the geeks are going to get busy on this one… I just bought a new scanner/printer (all of $60), and as cheap as they are there’s a lot of room for maybe putting it in interesting situations….

I already feel guilty about hanging around here engaging in little participation, but if themes like this keep showing up I’m going to have to make an effort… I’m going to have to start sometime I guess and I’ve seen 3 themes today that have me wanting to get involved. This forum is a hard course for someone who knows jack-all about photography.
