ParticipantI’ve been lots of places. Unfortunately, most of them were when I was young and with my sister and our parents, and my Dad was taking most (or all) of the pictures so I can’t use any of those. I’ll have to see what I can find. Might have to scan in some pictures from scrapbooks of the ones I definitely took.

ParticipantI’m out for this week, too. Have some for next week though. Nothing I have really works.

ParticipantSome of these I had intended to crop as I could only get in so close to the subject. I should probably increase the DOF as I noticed when putting in the info about these that most were the same f/stop and the same ISO, so I do need to play with that some, get some variety. A good portion of these I manually focused. It’s rather easy to get the subject focused in the center because there are 3 focal points vertical. I like hearing that beeping when I get something in focus, which has been important with such a low f/stop. Hence the planning for crops with center focusing to bring the focus off center as I’m learning to manual focus.
I have been looking at pictures for Autumn, if it actually gets scheduled. I figured with this camera I can more accurately capture the brilliance of the colors that tends to come out here, so I’ve been trying to get those done while the colors are available.
I take the pictures then delete them after they’re on the hard drive. Hubby does that part beforehand, but I do it after. I’m definitely going to have to get more hard drive space on this machine. I have the cabling to add another SATA drive, but there was also talk of just giving me a bigger RAID drive in the first place, so I’m not sure how it will proceed. RAW pictures take up more space so I’ve been hesitant to use that setting.
Thank you for the feedback. It is appreciated. 🙂

ParticipantThus far I’ve only peripherally introduced my husband to your creative side by showing him a couple of things that you did. Okay, I showed him the soda can filter thingy. I’m not sure I want to show him any more. He’s an engineer, or at least going to school for mechanical engineering, and you might just give him some ideas, and I don’t know if I want any more floating through the house (though I must say I have benefited greatly from his imagination and ides with a custom desk, foot stool for my foot pedal for work, shelving for work materials, just to name a few).
Will be directing him here tomorrow so he can see. He might have a few thoughts. He will also be allowed to use my spiffy new camera, but he’s the only other person I’ll allow at this point, and only when I’m not using it, or if I need to ask/show him things. He doesn’t photograph now like I do, but he used to, and he’s good at technical things.
Damn engineers. How does Kestrana do with all this?

ParticipantBy that then, if the road crews up in Lincoln aren’t done yet, maybe I can get a few shots of them this week. Else, I’ll have to find something of Hubby and/or Atrus. Hubby and friend (who’s staying with us now) often work on homework together, so I might be able to catch some of that. In a couple of weeks my parents are coming up Columbus Day weekend to help Alex and friend reshingle the roof, which badly needs done. While I will take pictures of that, it’ll be too late for this contest.

ParticipantThis can include work on anything, correct? I’m thinking working putting something together, working on homework? That’s pretty much all I’m going to be able to get.

ParticipantI’m vote whoring on fish. A 3-month-old in a onesie with a fish on it saying “I’m a keeper” is totally vote whoring, especially when his fat cheeks are bulged out with him smiling. what? it’s a fish!
Was going to go with my 4-year-old eating cookies, but the shots didn’t come out as I planned. Going with what I’ve posted earlier in the thread though anyway. I may not garner many votes, but they were what I planned on using. Not going to archive dig for my 4-year-old eating his first cake (which was hilarious, as every 1-year-old is when they have cake for the first time).

ParticipantThe only people I’m good at are my kids, and even then I’m not fantastic. I’ve only had lots of practice with them. 🙂 Hubby doesn’t let me take many pictures of him, and the rest of my family I’m not around enough lately to get pictures.
I think the shot is fine. What I see: Three kids playing in the sand, two in swimsuits. Possibly building sand castles, but not at the beach so far as I can tell. Backsides are hard to judge sometimes. Looks like possible friendship, but where they don’t seem to be interacting, hard to tell; they could be familiar with each other or don’t mind the presence of others.
I think you did just fine, but I’m interested to see other input.

ParticipantI had half a mind to photograph the desserts section in the bakery, but never got up the gall to do it. Lots of cakes there. 🙂 I’m going with what I already have.
p.s. Fish is in two weeks. Next week is Labor Day.

Participantclouddancer, what the? You were supposed to be jealous of me, not the other way round 😉 No fair, I haven’t even laid my grubby paws on Curious‘ old Minolta yet, and you’re already playing with yours 😥
In all seriousness, I am very glad for you. Happy shooting!
Sorry, Zero. It’s just so weird how it worked out. I’ve taken around 700 pictures so far. Learned how to adjust the F/stop, the shutter speed, the clarity in looking through the view finder, even found out (with the shutter speed) how to get to long term exposure and what options there are for that.
I’ve uploaded new pictures to my albums on Facebook, so if anyone wants to friend me there and look at them, that’s fine. Mostly I’ve gone shot happy with Chancellor, Atrus is less cooperative and likes to be right up close until he decides he doesn’t want any more pictures. Haven’t done any outside shooting yet, but it has also rained the last couple of days. Maybe today. Some time ago I got a two-sided floor puzzle for Atrus that turned out perfectly themed for the Fish contest, and I might do those again seeing as he’s home today from Day Care since Daddy and Uncle Will have a math test tonight and can’t have him there because they would have to pick him up beforehand and if I go pick him up I’ll be really late for work, so he’s home with me today.

ParticipantGot a 4 GB card today while I was out. Already planned on having a second battery, but haven’t looked up price or where to get it. Also haven’t looked through much of the manual yet. The Chancellor has been rather demanding the last couple of days in terms of being held a LOT, so either something’s up physically, or he’s just going through a developmental phase.
I’m going to have to get another hard drive to store all these pictures now though. I have dual 250s raided, but even then I only have 79 GB free, so I will have to take that into consideration.
With the P&S, I used the LCD a lot to line up shots. Any suggestions to not use it but also to not have that squinting all the time? If I have both eyes open focusing through the view finder just doesn’t work.
Rav: Curse you for mentioning that cake! I might just use the shots I already have for the desserts contest. However, I’ve been requested to make pumpkin pie, and while I was out I got brownie mix, cake mix (and frosting), and more chocolate chips, so we’ll see how the next two or three days work out in terms of baked goods to photograph. That blueberry cake was a LOT of work and I’m not really up for making it again. Okay, okay, and I couldn’t find any blueberries at the store. Besides, I’m on dish detail specifically for a while anyway. 🙂 Gotta “work off” that camera some how.

ParticipantThanks! I’m all excited. I did get a book on digital photography, but it’s been over my head because I haven’t been able to adjust any of it myself to figure out what was going on and what it meant. Now I can, so I’m looking forward to it.

ParticipantFWIW, I think they’re great shots. Probably doesn’t mean much coming from me, but there it is. I like them.

ParticipantAs good an idea as it seemed, somehow dark chocolate brownies didn’t come out as delectable-looking as I would have hoped.

Set these out on the deck after dark with just the flood light on and used long-term exposure to get enough light, no flash. Will have to bake another batch of brownies in order to take more shots (the above is the best), but I’ve since made chocolate chip cookies (with help from the resident 4-year-old) and while I got better pictures of those, they also haven’t lasted long, so will have to re-bake more to get other shots. Though, I think this one came out nicely:

ParticipantZero – all yours. It’ll be months before I’m able to scrounge the cash. I’m just dreamin’ here. Someday, maybe. Some day…
