Thoughts? Are we giving away what we should be selling? Are we taking food out of the mouths of pros by giving away our stuff like this?

    1) in the overall scheme of things i doubt the money is significant. either for an individual work or en-mass since it’s doubtful a lot publishers, blogs, etc would be using your random photos. unless you have a jack ruby type shot it ain’t going viral.

    2) there are businesses that will host your digital (or actual) photo if you want to sell it/them. iStock and Getty images are examples.

    3) i tend to think of sharing as helping a stranger with a flat tire. it’s a one time thing that makes you feel good and helps your fellow man (woman person whatever).

    4) IMO going the “i want to be paid” route means probably getting less used and also being sad when you aren’t generating loot.

    5) my flickr and website photos are restricted but i’ll let folks use them if they ask. and frankly few have so it doesn’t come up much 🙂

    6) too many “pros” i’ve seen take crappy shots. if they sell less we are doing them a favor by making them get better. seriously, there are folks here who do really good work and are pros in all but name only.

My picture was found on Flickr and yes she asked me for permission before using it.

I was almost jumping up and down from joy when she asked to use my picture.

reading comprehension isn’t my friend tonight. thanks for the reply.

someone once sent an email using my website email addy asking for permission to use a picture on there. but i so seldom look at that email by the time i replied the deadline had past.

on the odd occasion i look at my web stats i find referers from sites i know i never put pictures on. but i doubt anyone is making money from them so i don’t worry about it.

ennuipoet and lokisbong did you submit those or did the folks who used them just find them? and if they found them did they ask permission?

In Texas, they have a version where the Three Bears come back to find cute little Goldilocks asleep on Little Bear’s bed, and they invoke the Castle Doctrine.
Boy, did that ending surprise the kids.

    that’s hilarious.

wish i could have used my trip to russia shots but they don’t scan well. in fact i passed on all the older film prints for that reason. OTOH i’m happy with what i entered.

my cameras don’t number that way since i assign names to each batch of photos. of the several digital cameras i own or have owned the total is 80GB for 30,790 files/images in 596 folders. this digital history is 8 years old. so it looks like i’ve been slacking off 🙂

Sheesh, it’s come a long way.

Yep, that’s probably the thing that makes me feel oldest – how often I find myself saying, “I can’t believe insert product with unbelievable capacity/performance is only $insert unbelievably low price“. 🙂

My first year in college, terminals were a scarce resource and so were reserved for upper classmen. Freshmen had to use punch cards. Yes, my first real programming class was in FORTRAN on punch cards.

Can someone help me find my walker?

my first and only computer class we used punch cards. later a girlfriend took FORTRAN and for the first few weeks i could help her with the math. she then sped into areas i couldn’t keep up with. i admire folks who can do advanced math. mostly because they can see it in their minds.

first add on HDD 4GB WD $209. just bought a 1 TB WD for $60. 🙂

now this i saw in ’69 in santa monica at a company that did programing for the air force. they had a legacy vacuum tube mainframe with a 3 foot by 5 foot panel which had rows and rows of light bulbs. when they did a dump a polaroid mounted on a swing arm was aimed at the panel and a picture taken. the programmer had to count the lights on/off to see where his program hung.

yeah i too am (repetitively) old.

if i’m counting these right i like #10 best too. as for why, well it has nice colors, no particular subject so your eye wanders around finding things. like the cow.

My brother in law just gave me one that he found in the garbage. I was expecting a normal 35mm enlarger the way he described it. Then I almost crapped myself trying to load it into the truck.

they are hefty aren’t they? and the negative holder for a 35mm neg makes the negative look like a postage stamp. fortunately i had use of an advancing negative holder then too.

i am a bit surprised someone just threw out that enlarger. although to most folks it probably is garbage. one mans trash and all that. glad you got it.

i used to tote this around.

Yikes! Now there’s a man who’s committed to his craft!

i had access to a darkroom with a beseler 4 x 5 b/w enlarger then. and free paper and chemicals. plus it would tilt 90 degrees and do poster size. if one had paper, which that place did on rolls.

the one thing i miss about austin is that darkroom.

I toted my full-size dSLR, a couple of lenses and a tripod through most of Animal Kingdom and EPCOT in Disney World, much to the chagrin of my wife. (I believe her words were something like “Don’t expect me to carry any of that crap if you’re bringing it in!” 🙂 )

i used to tote this around. http://www.flickr.com/photos/57055068@N00/4742968109/in/set-72157624254668835/ plus a tripod big enough to hold it. the tripod has a reversing center column. http://www.flickr.com/photos/57055068@N00/371067351/ i have no idea how heavy it is but i was (much) younger then. http://www.flickr.com/photos/57055068@N00/2796776585/

the longest walk i ever took with it was in del rio, tx at the Amistad National Recreation Area. got some nice shots but it will wear you out.
