ParticipantI have irfanview, used it for years though I didn’t care for it’s editing capabilities (the canon software seems better suited) it’s great for resizing and such. Where is the ‘save for web’ option, though? I looked for that today and couldn’t find it. As for hardware, I just upgraded to 4gigs ram in my lappytop–mmmm rammy goodness…
sorry for the late response.
the “save for web” is a plugin. go here for the download.

Participant(assuming I either have or can get decent editing hardware; )
both the Gimp and Infanview http://www.irfanview.com/ are free and will do both resizing and “save for web” reducing of file size.
that presupposes you meant software not hardware. if you meant hardware both will run on a pretty limited computer.

Participantbut like linguine said, it’s fair to add small borders around your images even if the image itself doesn’t come that way.
i added one to mine and it really made a difference.
I just finished a roll on my Ikoflex TLR. Did you know there are no one hour photo places for 120 film?
found that out the hard way when a friend gave me some 120 film. and the only local place that processed it went belly up. next closest is 30 miles away.
re 2 1/4 cameras i have a “Tower” which is a cheap sears knock off. after it got a small screw replaced to stop the light leak it works fine. also have a real rolli with leather case and built in meter. want to guess which got used more?
and i have two roll film backs for my 4×5 but they are 6×9 (2 1/4 x 3 1/4) and with one of the camera lenses there is major vignetting. makes for interesting shots though.

ParticipantAny subject, as long as the photo itself is in square format.
Thanks to PandyFarmer for the theme suggestion!
difficulty: must be shot with a 2 1/4 camera
going old school here.

ParticipantCurious, ravnostic Not sure about the pro account though; if it means paying with a credit card I am stuffed, because I don’t have one.
And my photos barely count as “rank amateur”, let alone pro…i think you can use paypal and tie that to a checking account. of course given paypals infamous past i can see why you might not want to do that.
as far as “pro” goes i’m with you 100%. i got the pro account because it was much easier to use for stuff i wanted to share with the general public. i have paid hosting and a web site also but due to poor design (my fault for that) it isn’t viewer friendly.

ParticipantLeicaLens: You can get GIMP, which is free, and it has a similar option for saving your images at a quality you specify. It even has a preview option so you can see exactly what the saved image will look like at the quality you’re setting and what the resulting file size will be.
And yes, Flickr will require a yahoo acct. Also, the free version will be limited to 200 images and a certain file size limit upload per month. You shouldn’t have any issues with running up against that if you’re only uploading Fark-sized images. Of the images that I’ve noticed dropping lately, a significant proportion of them are hosted on Imageshack, so I’m guessing their servers get pounded and can’t always take the pounding. Flickr has had some occasional hiccups, but they’ve been pretty rare in my experience.
LeicaLens you can also get http://www.irfanview.com/ IfranView which also has a save for web feature and is also free. it too has a preview feature.
a flickr pro account is $25 a year which is reasonable. or i think it is. if you plan on entering regularly and want your images to last/show up months later you almost need paid hosting of some sort.

ParticipantI have a question about file sizes.
a lot of us use the “save for web” feature in photoshop. it allows you to select the file size in kb by selecting the quality. with a simple photo, subject against solid background, you can get a small file and decent quality. with a detailed photo you are going to have a bigger file for the same quality setting.
while the size in pixels and kb of the original plays a part in the re-sized photo it’s not the controlling factor. how simple or busy the photo is makes more of a difference. and the amount of detail usually can’t be seen well at 640 pixels which is why so many folks have the “bigger here” tag.

Participantcurses, RL got in the way again and i’m not going to have anything for this.

Participantfinding a creative way to shoot it will be the trick.
exactly. now i need to figure out how to fit the bottle in the shot and still have it look good at 640 pixels. notice i said shot. i’m so punny.
on the other hand maybe mixing guns and alcohol isn’t a good idea.
also my 1911 has been parkerized so it may not show up so well.

Participantbut i was told plants feel pain, how can that be if they don’t have brains?
this one is going to be hard to narrow down to just three. especially give some of the really nice flower shots i remember from other contests. oh well competition toughens you or something like that.
Curious
Participantdidn’t vote (or really look at the contest) until this morning. some really nice work there guys and gals.
i’m always impressed by the creativity here. so often i “got nothing” and you all just post really neat stuff.

ParticipantHere’s a link to my HDR set on Flickr, for those interested.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ennuipoet/sets/72157622842248524/liked most of them. toning down the — well whatever it is you have to tone down — seems to really help make them more lifelike while still getting the extra detail.
like i need to tell you 🙂 thanks for sharing.
BTW i have a print of a film shot taken of the cliffs at laguna beach, ca that has that same coppery sky as you hudson river shot (photo 4). did the print myself and have never been able to replicate it. which is a shame because i love how it turned out.

ParticipantIf you wish to get all weepy at how GOOD HDR can be http://www.stuckincustoms.com/hdr-camera/. This fellow is an acknowledge Master of the Craft and his work really peaked my interest in what can be done with HDR.
liked the “ice hell” one and the donkey but overall i’m not sold on HDR. to me it’s not natural and seems a bit garish. YMMV
that said i hate you for linking to that site. just spent a half hour looking at nikons i can’t afford but droll over.
bought a refurbished L20 the other day and while i like the color saturation the lack of sharpness at distance is a bit annoying. macro is real nice however. i’m guessing it wasn’t designed for serious telephoto work. the “smile” feature gave me a clue 🙂

Participantthanks orionid it doesn’t make sense to me but a lot of what i saw/did in the navy didn’t either.
on our first transit i was the lowest/newest guy in the navigation department and got after steering as my special sea detail. on my second transit the chief said i would have after steering for my special sea detail since “i’d seen the canal before”. two tips, 16-20 hours total and i’ve been topside for maybe two of those. not too impressive for a QM 🙂
