ParticipantAlso, realized too late (probably thankfully) that I have an entire gallery of the 9th Ward that I could have chosen from for this week.
i live on the northshore and still haven’t driven through the 9th ward. then again i tend to stay out of new orleans except for going back and forth to work or when folks visit. this area and the MS gulf coast still have so much damage that it’s amazing. and rather sad too.

Participantwaited until today to shot my bright idea. nice day today, warm but not hot, plenty of sunshine ….
didn’t matter, my execution of the idea(s) didn’t work and it was all i had.
next week i’ve got the opposite problem. way too much to choose from. good thing we do one of these each week since it evens out.

Participantcan i have a special dispensation to post 30 entries for this? all with voting?
between the katrina damage and living in an area with abandoned farm houses etc. just picking three from my archives will be tough. let along going out and shooting new stuff.

Participantafter some slight soul searching i dumped my second entry. concept was good, execution not so much. was going for this: bucky_bacon 2009-10-21 08:26:50 PM but his is much better. i just couldn’t get the lighting to work the way i wanted.
and this is the only contest where i have only one entry. the archives turned up marching band pictures but they too sucked.

Participanti am going to enter two photos tonight. neither ended up like they looked in my mind. but they are on theme as music players and i wanted to enter something. probably shouldn’t wait until the last minute to shoot my stuff.

Participantyou are absolutely right. i apologize for doubting you.
guess i should have actually read “the rules” before posting. 🙁

ParticipantConversion of the whole image to B&W is entirely OK. Anything done selectively to the the image gets you on thin ice. Color pop is right out. Clone stamp for filter dust is OK. Clone stamp for a big forehead zit is not OK.
Right folks?
Cleaning up the zit would be ok.
you sure of that? seems sort of slippery slope to me.
/am well know for being anal about “the rules”

Participantjust an FYI follow up, amazon now has the studio set up for $22.95. that’s a little less than i paid for mine when i got it on sale at wal-mart.
and don’t hate me for buying it at wal-mart. 🙂

Participantif that’s the rules for tonight then i misunderstood and will have very simple entries. not the first time 🙂
and given my archives i could have gone nuts with my photos and photoshop. which i really need to practice with anyway.

ParticipantMy understanding is that you can effectively “add things” by stacking photos together and select the parts of each you want visible by cutting things out (or making them transparent) from top images to show parts of the ones underneath.
to me that’s photoshopping.
this image was rotated and cropped. http://www.davesweblife.com/images/stuff%20for%20friends/lizard.jpg
this image had everything but the boy made transparent (in essence i selected only the boy) using the magnetic lasso. http://www.davesweblife.com/images/stuff%20for%20friends/small-boy.jpg
and then i placed the boy on the lizard resulting in this. http://www.davesweblife.com/images/stuff%20for%20friends/boy%20with%20lizard.jpg
now i took both those shots and stacked them using photoshop but don’t think i could enter them tonight.
and please no comments on the crappy cutout work. it was a quick and real dirty for a friend.

Participantre linking, i think just one of mine will have a link to the original. of the other two in one the “trick” is pretty standard although i like how it turned out and the other is pretty obviously not how the subject looks in real life.

Participanti always wait a couple of days before voting. so it’s been a couple of days and i scroll down the contest voting for those i like.
holy crap, a q&d count of the votes given is 65 -70 !!!!!!!!!! never voted for so many.

Participantwell for tonight i’m going to have to rely on desaturate. turns out my latest camera won’t do B/W 🙁
and yes, i’ve had the camera for 3 years and am just finding that out.
Usually you are better off converting from color. Why throw away all the information contained in the color image?
you’re talking to a guy who broke his photography teeth on Tri-X. and then spent a couple of years in a (mostly) B/W darkroom.
i don’t think in digital. to me a B/W setting on the camera means it captures gray scale like film, not that some software in the camera does a conversion.
yeah i should know better and when i really stop and think about it .. ok, we found the problem.

ParticipantI have been thinking about getting some lights to use with props and stuff, but I’ve no idea what I’m looking for. What I originally wanted was this: http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/cameras-photography/a205/
take a look at this one. http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Concepts-Ps-101-Portable-Lighting/dp/B000FBF400
it has blue and gray backgrounds (they flip over) or you can use whatever you want. it’s small at 17″ tall but fine for a lot of stuff. you can add light at the top if needed since the top is the same material as the sides. another plus is that it folds up into its own carry bag and there are pockets for the lights and tripod.
i have one and while it’s not the same as several hundred dollars in umbrellas and strobes ….. well you get what you pay for. it really is good for small stuff.
