The did say that the mechanics of the camera are sound.

The K1000’s are built like tanks, I would be surprised there ARE light leaks. I beat mine to hell before it disappeared and it still took great shots. When my folks gave me their old Canon AE1 which I am shooting on now, I had to have the shutter repaired, they tend to stick as they get old. It cost 80 bucks here in NYC. To tell the truth if the camera didn’t have such sentimental value I probably wouldn’t have paid that since you buy another less than that. That being said, since it is an “heirloom” camera, I am guessing you will pay what it takes if it needs fixing. Good advice from the camera people though, shooting a test roll. The nice thing about old cameras and repair places, they tend to be straight up with you. I got a free clean at B&H a few weeks ago just by having my Yashica with me when I went it. The guys in film started looking at it, called down the repair guy because he’s a fan of old TLR’s, he cleaned the lens and blew dust out just for letting him look at it.

Speaking of old cameras, I just bought a Petri 7 (http://www.camerapedia.org/wiki/Petri_7s) rangefinder with accessories on ebay for 20 bucks. I am hoping to run some rolls through it before Christmas.

I’m in the no crop camp. It’s too late to add to the difficulty but I will probably take cropping into consideration when voting. I always felt that part of the challenge of using a prime is that you have to compose more carefully to get the best effect from the lens.

This. I would like to say no crop, but how do you enforce it? Sure, obvious crops are obvious, but a subtle crop, chances are no one would know. I say let the voting do the thing, throwing it to the wild whimsy of Fark.

I’ve been shooting with my 50 mm yesterday and today. I really don’t like being restricted with my lens choices. I understand the purpose of the theme – I just don’t like it. 🙁

I hear this. You’d think this would be easy, but I’m having a difficult time, and I’m only in the planning stages.

Shoe leather zoom! Run up to the subject for close up, run away from the subject for wide angle! 😉

One of the reasons I am using the TLR is lens options are pretty much what is on the camera. I DO have a bayonet telephoto, but the image quality is terrible.

About a year ago, I picked up four or five rolls at $5 a roll. I had to dig through the crap to get that, though. Most people were asking $15-25 a roll.

About three months ago, I picked up four more rolls at $2.75 a roll. Still had to dig through the $15-25 whackos.

I’m thinking next month….. oh, dammit.

Yup, you’ve got 25 days until Dwayne’s turns it off forever.

I’ve got to say, shooting film is…well, hell, it’s special. It takes time, patience, practice. When you put it together with home developing, it’s a craft. It is slow, time consuming, but rewarding. Perhaps it’s just me, but if you love photography, then go back in time once in a while and savor it how it was. It will also make you appreciate how it is.

    Enjoy!

I am exceedingly pleased my very self referential, utterly meaningless to anyone else yet intensely personal Patty Griffin shot broke double digits. It was one of those things that I could care less about the votes, I just wanted to do it. Thanks to any and all who threw a vote for it.

Everyone this week brought their “A” game, epic thread was epic.

And I guess I’m concerned with the impression that gives that if there’s a new concurrent site, then there’s no need for the original.

For several years Stovepipe Bender’s Honor Roll and Mr. Squirrel’s Scrutinizer ran concurrently for the Photoshops. They both tracked the same information but offered different visions on how the data was presented. (Both, sadly, are now history) Schnee FSM does a stellar job, and I don’t think it COULD be replaced. Any other tracker would supplement, not supplant in my eyes.

Also, there is some movement on Fark itself to create a Fark hosted and maintained contest tracker. (As I understand Drew is looking for a Code Wizard to take on the task from the ranks of Farkers) Thus, we could conceivable see a THIRD method for tracking contests.

My first SLR was also a K1000. Man that thing was sweet. I didn’t realize what a great camera it was at the time and just bought it because I was attracted to the way it looked and the non-electronic aspects of it. Then the pictures were just spectacular.

I pawned it during a lean time in college, and regretted it ever since.

Seriously, I lost mine, my whole camera bag with lenses, filters, the works. I moved around a lot when I was in the military, after one move I simply couldn’t find it. I bought a body and 50mm on ebay a while back, it is sitting on my camera shelf because I don’t have a battery in it. I should really fix that.

I am good with either or both.

Any time one brings politics into something, bad blood follows. I definitely vote for a politically neutral charity.

Most of the mid 80’s Pentax were built like tanks, clean it out, work the shutter and the film advance a little, load a new battery and hit it. If it is a K1000, you are in for a treat, they are sweet little camera’s, my very first time was on a K1000.

You find shooting through a manual camera a little disorienting at first, you will forget to do things like advance the film….or focus. The shutter speeds are limited which can be frustrating if you are used to being able to climb into the 1000th of a second. It is fun, and you will find that shooting film slows you down (or it least it does me) and makes me concentrate on my composition. With digital I would shoot several frames while deciding what composition I liked most, with film you have to do that ahead of time, look twice shoot once.

It could have been done with a tilt/shift lens (first ones came out in the 60s, but I don’t know how wide they were), but it’s far more likely to have been large format with bellows. The perspective is completely distortion-free.

The other way to do it is to use a really wide angle lens and shoot parallel to the building and crop out all the wasted foreground (but I agree, a view camera is the most likely thing).

St. Marks is a narrow street to begin with, and the sidewalk is also quite narrow. As it was, I was in someone’s garbage, hunkered against the wall. While I was shooting this shot, (and some of you saw this on my FB) this 20 something asked me why I was being so diligent in shooting the building, and I replied it was a piece of Rock and Roll history, you know, Physical Grafitti. He looked at the building for a second and said “There isn’t any grafitti on the building”. I just walked away.

I’m available for proofs…I can also write some shiat As for charities, I propose we choose something related to eyesight/vision, such as an eye bank or blindness research institute. It fits nicely with the whole photography thing! 🙂

Ennuipoet: Nice job on the Physical Graffiti. Really has the album’s look to it. I guessed it even before scrolling to the text.

Thanks. It was a touch building to shoot, I actually took two trips to get something like what I wanted. I ended up shooting the building on my 28mm lens via AE1 because none of my DSLR lens was really wide enough to get the shot. I am guessing the original shot was done with a large format bellows because there is no place on the street to shoot the album cover shot with anything else. I played around in Photoshop trying to recreate the exact album cover (cropping out the fourth floor and dropping the room, changing the perspective of the shot) but never really got close. To think the original was done in a darkroom without the benefit of software gives testament to how skilled the original photographer was.

Ummm….. Depends. Does the EPA peruse these threads?

/Dilution is the solution to pollution.

See, that is what I am thinking, my lot is one liter of dev/blix/stabilizer each…I almost have to think that the rules about labs dumping fifty gallons at a time. I find it hard to believe there are so many people doing C41 at home these days to make us major polluters. Of course, it IS New York, so maybe I’m wrong.
