Farktographer I think that’s more so you don’t get sued by people when you take a picture of say, a street carnival with recognizable faces in it. The US actually has the same kind of law about “no expectation of privacy” when you’re in a public place.

Yes but I also believe (IANAL) that an individual has a right of ownership to their likeness in the US. It has been a while since I read through the material but it is why there are model releases. I think it comes down to money,.. if you are going to publish their likeness for money, you need their say so.

That having been said, I am not sure that a photographer is protected against someone whose likeness is published for no money, as in art, portfolio or contests with no purse (farktography). Examples of the money side gone wrong include photo subjects who did not like the way the image was presented or edited. I imagine that even if there was no money involved, someone could get huffy about subjective things like that, I just don’t know if they have a basis for dragging you into the court system

This is primarily why I am sitting this one out, that and I am a functional introvert.

I know there are much better filters out there but if you are not sure about GND and other filters, just wanting to try them or on a budget then Fotodiox has them about as cheap as anyone. They carry step rings and a few other things too.

Heh I would kill for the transportation to get to those places too. Right now I have no job and only a 50cc scooter for a ride. It would only take the better part of a week to get to the California border since I cannot use it on a highway legally. lol That lottery thing would rock! Maybe I should start buying tickets?

Gah, that sucks. NV is one of those states that doesn’t like scooters I guess. I researched “motorized bicycles” a while back and started a project to build one (so many projects, so little time). This is a grey area in some states and you can ride them on the roadside. Same size motor (50cc) can get up to 40mph if you’re brave.

Is it just me, or are some of the funniest not meant to be funny? I wonder if some voters hit the wrong category.

Yeah I noticed that too. Aspidites’ Yosemite (unsure if that is correct, never been there). Funny?

Also re vuprop, two things bug me about those photos. One, they look way better than mine and I’m jealous 👿 Two, those huge friggin watermarks ruin it for me. Way over-the-top IMO.

Agreed completely. I won’t vote for them because it seems to me he is just advertizing.
On a side note I wish I could convince any of my friends to visit Fark and vote on these contests. I might get a few more votes that way. Or is it just that my photos actually suck and no one will tell me?

    Hey Loki,

We all have photos that suck, my keeper rate is likely < 10% and that's on an "I tried to get the shot" basis not a "shutter click" basis. If I was counting shutter clicks it would likely be < 1%.

    FWIW:
I am not soap boxing here, understanding another person’s life is impossible for anyone. It seems like you might be up against a few challenges, but you have one HUGE advantage that I (and probably many of us) would kill for,… location. You are 100 miles from Yosemite and maybe a couple hundred from the Grand Canyon. I would KILL to have that kind of access. For me, that is only going to happen a hand full of times in my life (unless I win the lottery).

I lived in southern Idaho and western Washington when I was young and had little to my name. I got out to Yellowstone, the Tetons and pretty much anywhere in WA every chance I could. Did I say that I would KILL for your access?

    Anyways, hope some perspective helps.

    I’m scared of people O_O

You know, they’re just as scared of you as you are of them.

Possibly even more scared if you know, you take a little GHB to calm yourself down, a little adderall to get your confidence and energy up then some jackass starts in on you, like managing your own body chemistry is a crime, so maybe you overreact a little, maybe talk too loud, punch a wall or whatever. Fail to get your point across. Next thing you know everyone starts freaking out, getting involved when they didn’t see what happened, and they take his side. And you try to manage, sure, but nothing has kicked in yet and this is beyond what most people could take, and boom, you end up getting 9 months to appreciate the penal disparity between assault and battery. Next year you’re back out taking classes, trying to meet people, and your asshole parole officer talks to your teacher where everyone can see, and she’s uptight and is giving you the odd look from then on, so you know everyone in your class is thinking you’re some kind of freak, and now nobody is on your side. Sure, they patronize you with “oh, hey man, you’re looking better” or “hey it’s great what you’re doing for yourself, getting things together like this” and you know damn well they’re just trying to get away without making you freak out again, and they expect you to trust them and be friends when all they do is lie to you and mock you behind your back, and that stuff weighs on you, you don’t shake that off. That story is told through all of you, people can see it in you sinew. Boom, now you’re the scary loner.

But that probably won’t happen. I’m sure things will work out great.

Something like that. We should decide what’s iconic to us, not of our own pix, but to see what we see in others.

On the basis of this statement and a thorough two minute review of your bibliostats I pick ‘B’.

I’m glad to see this get some traction!

It comes down to the picking. If we choose personal favorites, that’s easier (although I’d have a hard time pickin from all my chilluns :), but I’d like to see a way to upvote/select others’ work.

How about the Farktographer picks three from their portfolio and posts them, the community then picks the final one?

Yeah, I’m a software guy. Day job is ASP.NET / SQL2005. My other main hobby is cycling, and run a fairly large vintage cycling website: VeloBase.com which is an online database of vintage cycling components and other information for reference purposes. It’s also ASP.NET / SQL, and was started as a training exercise for me while I was still on the old VB6 product at work.

Cudos ‘Cuda on the site velobase. I have used it in the past when researching older mountain bikes

But for the restuvus, this is totally concrete: This is not about concrete. ‘Stone’, for the purpose of this contest, can be from micron-sized particles collected and returned from earth from cometary debris, to Mt. Everest or, if you’re a size queen, Olympus Mons on Mars. It’s about the rocks, do’ncha know?

Igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic. That kind of stuph.

I am locked, cocked and ready to rock. Its good to be back in it agrain after taking SOOC off. Granite, I was only out for a week, but it seemed like a lava longer.

I know stuck in some closet somewhere at my parent’s house there is a large, heavy tripod that my dad used on his video recorder (circa 1985) that I am going to try to relieve him of along with his nikkormat ftn when I see him next. Thus, this purchase is more along the travel tripod needs. Something I’ll actually take with me on hikes / walks / etc. And then I’ll hope that the heavy unit my dad’s got will be just the ticket if I want to start doing very long exposure shots.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Dolica GX650B204 Proline GX Series 65 inch

    FWIW,…

If it was me looking for a hiking tripod, the Dolica GX650B204 would be a less than ideal choice as the folded length is 25 inches. I carry mine sideways across the pack, folded length of 16″ with ball head. Mine is a Velbon Ultra Max I F. It’s not real tall, it is really spindly but on the trail weight and size means a lot. An I have used it with a 7D/70-200L to get photographs I would have missed.

Alternatively, think about a stout mono pod as it can double for your walking stick (something else I use routinely).

I’m the reverse – I am a native Texan but have lived most of my life in OK. Sounds like maybe you’re near my point of origin, Big Spring. I think chupathingie’s in the general vicinity, too, but a bit north, closer to Amarillo. Of course, “near” is a relative term when talking about cities in Texas.

I wondered if chupathingie wasn’t familiar with the southwest, and its mythology just because of his moniker. Cool, I didn’t realize there were so many of us out here. Rav and Loki are both in the desert too.

We used to go through Big Spring on the way to Big Bend but have since altered our preferred route to go through San Angelo.

We get visitors from the east or midwest and it’s the running joke that the answer to “How far away is today’s activity?” is always “About an hour.”

Welcome, Malivon. There’s lots of good advice here and a lot of people have been down your same path.

ps, it seems like maybe ‘Cuda and I are Homies. I live near Granbury, looks like you might be up north of Dallas?

Didn’t know you were near Dallas, fluffy. I was just down there a few weeks ago for the Armed Forces Bowl. I’m sure you recognize one of my shots this week – it’s from that trip from the window of my hotel.

Yes I did recognize it, and the new suspension bridge told me it was pretty recent (don’t follow sports, didn’t realize there was a bowl game). Your profile says Tulsa, I drove there to get my truck several years ago.

I am not a native Texan, but have lived here longer than anywhere else, this is my home. Also, “near” Dallas is “Texas near”. I’m about 2-3 hours southwest.

Welcome aboard Malivon, also Barracuda. I have only been here a few months (as opposed to the years of some members), but IMHO this is a great place for your stated goals. It is a source of inspiration, motivation and camaraderie. Like Ya’ll, I had been an on and off photographer for a long time. I personally don’t learn any thing unless I have a reason, I can’t go to school just to get a degree. I have to have a goal. The community here and its contests provide just enough of a goal get you out taking pictures without drastically impacting your real life.

The people a friendly, accepting and generous.
