ParticipantHoly crap. I thought this one was next or something and the Monumental one was tonight! Whoops. I usually never mix these things up. Guess I’ll be unintentionally skipping since I don’t really have anything. Bummer. I do look forward to the pictures tonight. 🙂
Dont feel bad, you aren’t the first person to be ready to post for the next weeks contest.

ParticipantIt keeps giving me an error when I try to process the payment. Ive tried flickrs suggestions, different payment types, browsers, and computers using different operating systems and flickr still thinks its my fault.

ParticipantCool present and happy birthday.

ParticipantThat was Miller. I think that may have been the shot that made it into some chain email that was going around too.

ParticipantAwesome! Though, the history really should have started with: “In the Beginning, there was the Fark…” 🙂
Actually its
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was “Arrrgh!”linguine
ParticipantDo the farktography rules permit us to threaten to enter shots in the line of orionid’s in the future if we dont receive a satisfactory number of votes?

ParticipantThere used to be videoedit contests(even had an icon
), but I dont think Ive seen them for a couple of years. I have no clue who ran them or why it stopped, but I don’t think it ever had a huge amount of participation. As for how farktography started people just started posting photographys(maybe with a theme, I started a little after this but I think Elsinore was there for the very beginning) in the totalfark discussion on wednesday nights for fun and there wasnt even voting. This went on for a little while until they convinced/got drew drunk enough to let them have their own thread for a weekly contest.linguine
ParticipantSoosh Cool – Gotcha….. Makes me happy, more photos to choose from.
‘Guine – Yeah, exactly that.
I would have no problem with allowing people to do this in their IR photos since it seems like a fairly normal process to do on them. I dont think we want people going crazy with this on regular photos, but the rules already say not to go overboard making images look cartoonish or unrealistic so I think we’re ok there.

ParticipantI think I must have done channel-swapping on the skyline picture. I don’t think the in the trees ever showed up like that straight out of the camera.
I’ll have to go back and try to find the raw files at home to see what they look like.
Hmmm…..
Has there been any discussion about this? I’ve seen lots of other people using digital IR from time to time in the themes, and never really thought about it. Now that I’ve started playing with it myself, and researching/learning, I’ve realized that the blue sky effect comes from the (pretty standard) process of swapping the red and blue channels. I was planning on bringing it up in discussion at some point, since I’m leary about using mine under the thoughts that channel swapping is too software intensive. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should pull yours, I’m just curious if a decision was made before I came around, if it should be unaltered only from here out, or, since it’s been used fairly commonly in the past, let it be. Even unaltered out of the camera, you can get wild effects just by changing the white balance. On the road trip, I was shooting IR with WB braketing, and getting three completely different photos.
Great stuff in your directory, BTW. Here’s my foray into digital IR so far, All of them channel swapped, some with B+W 099 (orange) filter, some with Ha+IR (red astrophoto) filter.
Youre just talking about doing this right – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbHzBZtZaIM

ParticipantQuestion: Can one use a picture — same frame — but edited differently? I’ve got two (well three) in mind.
1) I used in software hootenany but I like the original. Actually there are two like this; the other I used in color popping and I like the original
2) I used in who-knows-what but I’ve since tweaked the post-processing. I can go back and get the file that I submitted, but obviously I like the re-processing or I wouldn’t have done it.
When we originally talked about allowing any entry from the past 5 years for this years anniversary contest we talked about allowing re-editing, but Im having trouble finding whatever thread we discussed this in to see if we had made a decision on that.

ParticipantAre you getting really close to your subjects when this happens? I have a d50 and occasionally I’ll have this problem when its having trouble picking a good focus, you can try shifting the camera a little to let it try to focus on something else. However if youre really close up you may be pushing the limit for how close the camera your lens can focus.

ParticipantI’ve an aesthetic question. Back when I was lad working in darkrooms, I shot in Medium format on an old Yashica TLR (god I wish I could remember which one so I could buy one), so the end results were square. Now, as I crop my images I find they look wrong with a border. So, I know that borders are usually out, any chance of being able to border for this contest?
This is what I mean here is a shot I cropped as a prospect without the borders
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ennuipoet/4576060575/
and now with
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ennuipoet/4576061049/On this particular shot the border is subtle but is just seems more…right…with the border.
YMMV
Unless its been changed we’re allowed to add small borders to photos. I would think the border you added would be fine.
