ParticipantGlad to hear you, your family, and friends are okay LeicaLens.

ParticipantSo much all of these. I’m glad I’ve got some time 😛

ParticipantI’d prefer keeping the difficulty at ‘human’, but I can think of several potential shots where both were in the scene.

Participant*//haven’t done so well at recruiting, overall. I envy you guys who have kids/spouses/siblings etc. from whom you can withhold allowance/sex/childhood embarrassments from public knowledge (respectively, mind you).
Actually it’s not a given that I vote for orionid and our parents don’t always vote for us either. Granted there’s probably been only 2 pictures he submitted that I haven’t voted for but I still try to maintain impartiality and ask my friends/family to vote for all pictures they think are worthy even if it doesn’t include mine.
Same here. I ‘share’ the link on Facebook once per contest to increase awareness & hopefully participation, but I don’t think it has any significant impact on my relative standings.
I usually vote for Kat’s pictures, but we also have discussions on submissions and the like, so it’s generally a given that I’m going to like what she posts because I’ve already tendered an opinion. Not always though.
/I try not to look at usernames when I vote either, so that I’m not picking favorites, or doing some sort of sub-conscious ‘I’ve already voted for one of theirs’, or some sort of vote-wrangling due to comparative standings in one of the FSM stats.

ParticipantAre hand prints acceptable?
So long as they’re human hands I’m cool with it. Likewise statues, sand impressions, etc.
I was trying to avoid paw prints, leaves that are vaguely hand-shaped, and that sort of ilk.
(personally I have a photo of hands, and some statuary, and an idea for a third that I have to get the models over to the house for)

Participanthahaha! olavf pulled off the shot that I just couldn’t get right with boxing gloves. Love it!
Thanks! It was a good afternoon’s effort to pull that off. I’d originally used 4lb-test fishing line, ’cause I’m an idiot, and then had to remake the rig with dark thread to match the background. Hardest part was arranging all the stars so that none of them were actually in front of his head, and then getting everyone to stand still while I tried to get the stars aligned so they’d show. There’s still a couple of strings showing, but I really couldn’t help it…
/only regret is that I couldn’t get a plain one mallet in time. I was gonna write ‘Acme’ on it

ParticipantI’ve always thought using three different types of pictures (or three different interpretations of the theme) is the most interesting/fun way to do these contests, if not the most vote-intensive.
I agree 100%
After agreeing 100%, I find that I have only two categories at present. Heh. Mild facepalm.
I have another idea and might pull it off tomorrow after work…
My three are all very different, though I may only post two. I dunno.
Toys’r’us apparently doesn’t sell giant rubber starfish anymore, and I’ll be dammed if the two stores we stopped at didn’t have any star-shaped glitter whatsoever.

ParticipantOne more before I give up on the idea of doing any AP shots

ParticipantPinprick stars is a good thing, actually. APers pull a lot of hair over making sure they come out that way. The hardest part of stars is getting their colors to show, like this guy managed to do:

Note the stars are not pinpricks, but that’s due to a smaller objective lens (101mm in this case). That’s from this guy’s site, BTW: http://www.dilbertobs.com/ccdimages.html …he just had a great example of color in a star cluster (/me weeps at own lack of optics to try this stuff with)I’m not an AP’er by any means, but those are seriously cool.
Getting the moon AND stars in the same shot is going to require some serious HDR… typical stars at mag 2, say, in the field with the moon at something like mag -10. It’s a huge difference in brightness.
Not necessarily 😀

(I’ve got one other I’m considering but haven’t PP’d yet. Fewer background stars but better moon – shorter exposure)olavf
ParticipantThey can Torx me off sometimes, but I don’t see a problem.
olavf
ParticipantI tend to do that generally. I call it ‘the shotgun approach’ 😛
Speaking of… anyone have thoughts on a shot where the the stars are prevalent, but a backdrop to the moon? Loving an astro shot, but with my rig the stars all look like pin pricks in cardboard.

I know, right? https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=503524&id=1045827169
/It’s good for you!

ParticipantI’m more of an Italian car guy, and I’d still find it nearly impossible to let a ride like that go :/
//gorgeous shot though.
olavf
ParticipantNo worries. I didn’t think so, but the perfectionist in me made me ask =P

ParticipantThe AIM-9/R uses liquid nitrogen to keep the IR sensor cool before launch, but that’s probably not good for your DSLR. Especially if you dropped it.
Anyway, I have a general question about photo edits. I have a large amount of string – 33 miles to be exact – and although it’s not cut up into three-inch lengths, there’s a couple of spots where it’s visible in the shot. Is it okay to smudge that? As a side note, what about things like shadows that crept into the picture that bug the hell out of me? Like this one: http://www.follandfamily.com/TF/mypics/110226/7725-karla_red_sm_web.jpg (not for this contest, but it’s the general idea – and I may want to use it down the road)
