ParticipantCongrats, and awesome!
*do* get UV filters for your lenses. If anything, they will help keep them from getting scratched, and I’ve heard of at least one instance where it saved the lens from being broken.
*do* get another memory card – I’ve found a single 8GB is more than enough for a single day’s shooting, even on a heavy day. (I’ve come back on at least one occasion with the card half-full). Plus, having a second card in your bag is always nice for when you leave your main one in the card reader…
And as Rav said, play with the DPP (Digital Photo Professional) software that came with it. Shoot RAW, too. You’ll be amazed at what you can do with it – I do 90%+ of my final editing there. Just being able to fix the white balance alone is worth it. (I can give an example with one of my pics from this week if you want to see)
Oh, and *do* have fun with it 😉
/also, throw your P&S in your purse, or your car. It’s never a bad idea to have one aroundolavf
ParticipantWe have a test bed at home that we’ve started playing with.
Jeepers. And people said my thank-your-mother post was creepy.
😉
Well, you know, it’s nice to have some place to try things out without breaking the real one….
/and congrats to Silverstag! Stiff competition from everyone this week, for sure.

ParticipantNo worries, but it’s addicting. We have a test bed at home that we’ve started playing with. Crazy.

ParticipantIf your host offers mysql then gallery2 is a snap to set up. You shouldn’t have to have them do more than create a database for you. Otherwise it’s not much more than uploading the files into a directory and walking through the steps – there’s one auth file you have to upload in the install process too, but that’s about it. I think others around here use Coppermine, but I haven’t played with it, so I can’t speak on that.
I’m having to re-learn html because I haven’t coded anything in years and years. Most of what I do is post things to Fark too FWIW. But, Kat and I have this crazy idea that we want to offer some of our prints for sale, so I’m having to re-learn. The server stuff is a side-hobby of mine, so it makes some sense to do it all here (plus it’s a bit cheaper, since I’m already paying for the internet connection) is all.

Participantthanks for the encouragement but i’m not a code monkey nor do i play one on TV and haven’t stayed at a holiday inn in years.
i want a fancy site with buttons, rollovers, pretty galleries and all the bells and whistles but without the work it takes to make it happen. since that won’t happen i am awaiting the motivation you spoke of. that i only get 5 visitors a year to the site hasn’t provided that yet. 🙂
I’m not a codemonkey either, but I’m having to learn pretty fast 😛
For our personal gallery I have a basic installation of gallery2, and will probably roll that into the ‘pro’ (for lack of a better word) site as well. As soon as I figure out how to integrate it all together nicely anyhow. I haven’t gotten past the ‘coming soon’ page yet =P
For a lot of the other stuff, you can find java code snippets that are available under GNU to do many cool features.
Our personal gallery2 installation is here: http://gallery.follandfamily.com and the source packages are at http://gallery.menalto.com/ (they have lots and lots of toys to plug-in that I haven’t begun to play with)

ParticipantI’m really just not much of a dessert person, so there’s not much in my cooking repertoire =P
I grill. My wife bakes.
(Harmless? They’re CAFFEINATED MARSHMALLOWS.)
Awesome shots. They even look tasty to me 😉

ParticipantGo get her, Ray!

ParticipantWell, let’s say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area. Based on this morning’s sample, it would be a Twinkie… thirty-five feet long, weighing approximately six hundred pounds.
/I think I have one for this week. I’m really just not much of a dessert person, so there’s not much in my cooking repertoire =P

ParticipantDidn’t really have anything spectacular for this one (unlike Soosh‘s aurora shots he’s just put up. Wow!). It was a surprisingly difficult theme, I thought, in spite of all the green around us.
Some good entries, and quite a few that made me smile (I’m looking at you, olavf, and your green hard-hats.Thanks 😀 I was rather surprised to see them too. And they were moving so quickly I had to chase them down…
Kinda surprised no one got/liked my ‘envy’ shot though. Oh, well.

ParticipantThat was my original plan, but with the wife’s PC going out, she gets all the innards from my current rig. At least this way I wound up with an upgrade to DDR3 and at twice the freq as well.
Someday I’ll be calling Astronomics for some hardware, but not if I have to keep updating the home PC front…
I have….a lot of computer stuff :/ I have an Atom-based PC and another full kit that’s 90% together that are just sitting around. The one that’ll probably go in the desktop was in my server, but I thought it was wonky so I replaced it, and lost the receipt :/

ParticipantThose were handed out for the Olympics last year. There are coffee mugs too.

Participant*sigh* that’s my next project. Server(s) have been upgraded, laptop desperately needs to be replaced, but the desktop is six years old and I haven’t done a damned thing to it in that time. Plus, the kids have been abusing it :/
I really want to get the dual-monitor action going when I’m editing though. And the screens are infinitely nicer than this POS laptop. I think I can get by starting with just a new proc and RAM (I have a motherboard…) =P

Participantbtw – Mr. Mopsy (grandpa U-Man) experienced a sudden cold, very painful leg a few days ago. Turns out he has an aneurysm behind his knee (popliteal artery) and it clotted – sending off a shower of clots to the small arteries in his foot. He had surgery and is recovering OK (grumpy, but OK) but any sort of good thoughts headed toward Green Bay would be appreciated.
Oh crap. clots aren’t good in any circumstance and leg ones are scary 🙁
I’m glad to hear he’s recovering well, and doubly glad it wasn’t on the ventricular side. Many good thoughts sent his way.

ParticipantSurprising that in today’s technical age someone would be so bold, when it’s pretty easy to discover this sort of thing. What’s that website where you can put in an image and it will come back with all the places on the web where that same image can be found?
Tin Eye was listed in the comments. It’s interesting, but doesn’t seem to crawl my gallery2 installation.
http://www.tineye.com/This whole thing makes me sad.
Me too.

Participantlol. True enough Elsinore.
/I’m probably going to have one from both camps =P
