ParticipantWhomever got it, thanks.

Participant*grumble* Elsinore, can you move my pic or should I just repost it?

ParticipantIsn’t that what the blur is for?

ParticipantI like reading what people have to say about their photos, whether it is an explanation or a clever title. I just look at the pics as I’m entering, checking to see if someone else is entering a similar type of photo because then I may change my mind about what to enter. But when I’m done entering my three, then I settle back and slowly go through all the entries and read everything they have to say.
I do too, but don’t have time to do that until later in the evening – I’m usually posting from work, and don’t generally leave for at least another hour.
I’m not really good with the words though – I think I do better when I let the images speak for themselves 😛

ParticipantTotal text fail. My ‘Moss’ shot is a macro of three moss sprouts growing out of a clump of the stuff. The background is the butt end of a 2×4.
/seems like I always put in either too much text, or too little. Oh well.

ParticipantI’m really torn on those kinds of photos, olavf…Does that make more sense?
I hear ya Elsinore…I think 😉
For better or worse, my take has been ‘what is the theme of the picture?’ rather than ‘does it contain element X?’, which can be somewhat subjective.
In any case, I’ve decided not to use the shot anyhow, partially because I agree – it’s too much “on the fence”, and partly because I know of another contest I can use it for where it’ll fit better
/plus I’ll have a chance to get rid of those two festering dust spots…olavf
ParticipantI think seed pods (and dead plants for that matter) are fine..they’re plant parts and part of the plant life cycle.
As for living things being in the photo, I guess that depends on how central they are to the photo. The theme description doesn’t preclude other living things specifically, but I don’t think a kid smelling a rose or a macro of a bug chowing down on leaves (or mating on said leaves, for that matter) really is about the plant at that point, and that doesn’t really seem to be what the theme is going for. If the bug, animal, or human is truly incidental to the point where the composition does not depend on them, I’d think that was fair game.
Hmmm, okay that gives me some food for thought, and my choices more difficult =P
This one’s a bit close to that line – the pic would be cool without the bee, but it’s definitely better with it in the shot.

ParticipantActually, now I have another question – what about seed pods and the like? They’re part of a plant, but separated from the part that is, or was alive?

Participanthm. I hadn’t consider that personally. There’s one or two I’d like to consider, but hadn’t because of the insects or whatever that are in it – even if they are ancillary.

Participantbut self-portraits are okay then?

And one of those is being married to me, but I’m not going to speculate on which 😉

ParticipantGot it. It was certainly on topic, though!
Man, there were all kinds of pictures I could have used except for the fact that they’re potentially embarrassing and/or have people in them who would not want their picture posted. Sooo yeah, just two for me tonight.
Thanks! I’d intended to use a different one (the Beer Garden post) but I guess I brain-farted at work.
I could have gone waaaay back in my archives for some really amusing stuff, but we’re both entering stuff in the county & state fairs, and the deadline for those are both this week too 😛

ParticipantElsinore, can you delete my 2010-04-21 08:03:35 PM? I don’t know what I was (or wasn’t) thinking when I posted that one.
olavf
ParticipantThere’s a “two Farktographers, one cup” joke in there, but I’m not making it.

ParticipantWhat Elsinore said. I played around with the blurring and that was the least amount I felt like I could get away with.
And thanks mopsy 🙂 I’ve been enamored of Edward Weston’s stuff lately so that makes me happy 🙂
