ParticipantI can’t say that I have a lot of experience with veiwfinders, but I’ve looked through a few scopes. When you adjust the focus, make sure it’s in focus as soon as you look through it. Your eye will tend to adjust to it if it’s just slightly out of focus, so you’ll want to check that it’s sharp the instant you look through it.
That’s good advice right there.
What scopes do you have? I have a “lowly” Televue Pronto, which is quite pleasing and, with a T-adapter, makes for a decent 480mm telephoto lens.
/sorry for the treadjack

ParticipantThis guy has nice things to say about the Photoshop software and shies away from Photomatix.
I’ve used the 1.8.x versions of qtpfsqui, but I’d probably jump to the 1.9 versions just ’cause.
This other guy has had some critical success with HDR and Photomatix. I think it is all in how you use it and what look you are going for.

ParticipantIn my search for ideas for this theme I typed “terminal” on dictionary.com. One definition regarding architecture referred to a “herm”. I was curious about this word. Here’s what the dictionary says – http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/herm (1st definition).
Odd.
That would certainly add a new tone of this theme.

Participanthey, mine actually fits for the orange theme!
Thanks for posting XenPix!

ParticipantI’m pretty much the author of that rule.
I was trying to strike a balance between portrait and journalistic ethics. No one likes to have a portrait done that does not present themselves at their best, consequentially, portrait photographers tend to do a significant amount of post-production work on those images.
Photojournalists shoot the world as it is (and if they don’t, there are consequences). Many nature photographers tend to follow a photojournalistic ethic.
I recognize that a compromise such as this will not satisfy everyone and/or every situation. That is the nature of a compromise. I’d like to converge on a win-win for everyone, but I’m not sure how to get there. On one end is pure photojournalism and the other is something like was recently posted on Strobist. Take a look at all the artwork done to that image of the baseball pitcher.
And I’m not too full of myself either. I don’t think that my FSM-itude gives me any special say in the Farktography program, nor does my reasonably long-term participation portfolio. I’m just some guy who picked up a ball and ran with it. If the rule doesn’t work, it doesn’t work and it should be modified. I humbly suggest, however, that we go with the new rule set for a bit and see what happens.

ParticipantThe nearest competitor quality wise seems to be the $17,000 Red One videocam.
Which is one heck of a camera. Each frame is done in RAW.
schnee
ParticipantThat’s the total number of votes gathered for the entries submitted during ‘this’ hour.

Participant(FSM isn’t loading at the moment).
back now, DNS trouble

ParticipantI’d be a little nervous going to an airport here and taking pictures.. What with my luck, I’ll be arrested as a potential terrorist
I actually had a nice little and friendly chat with a TSA agent in the Dallas airport. She was only interested in why I was taking pictures of a really boring airport (and I even had the tripod setup). I explained the contest and tried to enlist her in … inciting … some madness, but she didn’t bite.
There were several “no photographs” signs at the Cayman Is’s immigration/customs – I felt I didn’t want to push that…
schnee
ParticipantI was just in the Miami airport, trying to clear customs in less than an hour. If anyone took a photo of me at that time, it would have been a good entry for this contest.
(clearing customs took higher priority for me than making a photograph. I’m so ashamed – where do I turn in my Farktography card?)

Participant/if Wed rolls around and the FSM is still gone I’ll just pick something else.
s/b back now. Austin had a power incident right after my departure and the FSM relies more on supplications and less on uninterrupted power supplies. Tricky has been processed and all is good-to-go for Silhouettes.

ParticipantThere’s two “Go With the Flow”s in the FSM? Not sure what the difference is, but I thought I’d be the annoying one to point it out 🙂
Yeah, last week the FSM picked up the cat-caption thread and did its thing. I tried to scrub that out, but I guess I missed a couple of artifacts and something went awry and we’ve got two Flows (the 2nd actually shows the data for the cat-caption thread – go figure).
I’ll look into it…eventually.

ParticipantI have 11 GLs in 2 years. No whining!
Oh, I’m not whining. On the contrary, I think it is pretty neat-o when my Fark and Farktography world’s intersect (happens less than I would have thought).
Well, maybe I’m whining a little bit about the Tuesday thing. It is literally getting to the point where I don’t think I’m witty on Tuesdays (on a percentage basis). I get the Sunday thing. But Tuesday?

ParticipantI didn’t ruin anything (by direct action anyway) – I’m just going for the greenlights. I can barely spell ‘steampunk’.
schnee
ParticipantI’m sure schnee is on it, though 🙂
When I created the Freetime Sucking Monster, Farktography didn’t have its own tag, must less category. So I had to look at the headlines and I had to look for “Farktography”. 169 contests later, some other voting enabled contest with “Farktography” in the headline shows up greenlit, and the FSM did it’s magic. Sigh.
I need to figure out how to remove the lolcat contest. Will take a couple of days. In the meantime, laugh at the naive decisions I made two-point-five years ago.
(did I get that “it’s” correct? I always forget)
