Participantoddmind to the best of my knowledge, use of the same frame as previously submitted, in any form, is strictly prohibited, except when expressly stated in the theme’s ground rules. That’s why we *cough*ahem* bracket *cough*cough*
Yep. What he said. It has to be a different frame.

ParticipantI have a ‘thing’ about this. A negative thing. I like my horizons all nice and level. It kind of hurts to tilt it.
/got nothing and no ideas.

ParticipantHoly AMAZING entries!!
I know, right?! Who suggested this theme anyway? They must be a geni…
/nevermind
//and that is the beginning of ‘genius’. Not ‘genital’ or ‘genital wart’ or anything else silly like that. There will be noooo silliness here.U-Man
ParticipantWell, I don’t think that’s what U-Man had in mind, but technically, the description doesn’t say anything about an actual star undergoing nuclear fusion.
What she said. In the grand scheme, a fake sun in this theme isn’t something to worry about.

Still a little numb from the dentist’s chair, Ulle? I caught the lisp. 😆
Thanks CISS; a shot with similar tones is one of the ‘ayes’
TTFU you big bully. And, yeth, I thtill have the lithp with that firtht word in ‘TTFU’. 😛

ParticipantSome bees, plus some other shots I considered but won’t be going with:
I see what you did there. 🙂

ParticipantCan I get a ruling on this one?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ilpadrino03/6545837051/I may or may not decide to use it; it’s not one of the stronger entries I’m looking at in my archive, but I’m curious if it’ll work. The sun isn’t clear, but you can visibly see that the sun is in the sky overexposing the background.
It works. The sun is certainly in the frame. It would be nice if it was more…sunny…but it fits the theme.

ParticipantStop me if I’m wrong but the shots U-Man posted are all ones he’s used for other themes?
Heh. Probably. I quickly grabbed them from my ‘Saved for Web’ folder as examples. Sorry if I caused a minor ruckus. (However, if I don’t find better stuff I’m sure I have unused versions.)
Actually, only the gargoyle and clover were used. I did another version (different frame) of the clover and might use it. The dragonfly is in. Can’t decide about the cattail…

ParticipantSo I keep a folder of pix that I’ve stumbled across on the web that I’d like to reproduce/reinterpret someday (as I suspect many of you do) and since I’m not going to get a chance to do it myself, here’s one that would be perfect for this contest (maybe even U-Man competitive, if well executed).
From what I have managed to scrounge up, I’ve selected two. Anyone wanna offer an opinion as to which of these should be the third? TIA.
CISS, I almost shot that last week while in Florida. 🙂 I even had the light bulb. Then I just…didn’t. But I will some day.
And by the way folks, Thank you for the compliments. I really do appreciate them. But you know that you’re completely jinxing me, right? 🙂 These shots aren’t all that technically difficult. Stick something interesting between you and the sun, have the sun peek out to varying degrees, perhaps add some fill flash to avoid a black silhouette and presto!
This is one of my go-to techniques. I like it. And these goofy themes causing us all to grow a little bit is what it’s all about.

ParticipantNot that I plan on using it, but what about the sun through clouds, where you can see the suns there, but not so much that you get lens flare or blowout?
Example: http://fossilspringsaz.com/pics/2012/apr/18/sif.jpg
//not planning on using, but a fair example of what I mean.
That’s pushing it. While there is definitely a bright spot, I’d like it less equivocal.

damn U, man!
Ha! Thanks. I was really just showing some examples of the spirit of the theme. I will be combing the archive over the next few days.

ParticipantThe way I interpret the theme, that shot (while gorgeous) wouldn’t qualify as the sun isn’t visible. The theme description says it can be partially obscured, but must be visible.
However, I’ve been known to overinterpret, so hopefully U-Man can give a more definitive clarification on what he’d like to see allowed/disallowed.
What she (and kestrana) said. At least part of the sun – not just rays – needs to be visible. IMO if you can get a star-burst, there’s bright sun coming through.
And for the initial “is it safe” question – I shoot into the sun all of the time. I don’t use a long lens and long shutter speeds while pointing right into the sun. But this one is at 280 mm on a 7D (APS-C) at ISO 250 and 1/8000. It was sunrise on the way to work.
