ParticipantYeah, lenses are a hard choice.
I’m sure this discussion has been held in some thread. But what are your favorite off-brand (non-Nikon, non-Canon) lenses? What lens do you walk around with? Which ones are your fav’s for specialty work?
I started a thread over in the Hardware section of the forum.

ParticipantLooks like it’s a Mother/Son grudge match for this one. Now, U-Man, you’re not going to deny your Mother a well deserved win, and on Christmas, are you??
I’d love to throw in a “BRING IT, BIA….” right here but that would be sooo wrong. Plus Mopsy has a comfortable lead right now. I’m happy for her – first (probable) win and all. I must say, it is the best one this week.

ParticipantOk, so was the squirrel held up to make the reflection or layered in in post processing?
Aw Christ, not another KFC bucket. 🙂
Mr. Squirrel McNuts was googled and printed. Then he was cut out and suspended by four pieces of black thread taped to the back side. I started to cut a jagged edge around his tail and quickly gave up. But you can see three or four notches along the side of his tail (on our left, his right). I didn’t want a bunch of camera and me in the reflection so I shot it from across the room with a 300 mm zoom.
/did this at my mom’s house.
//my nephew told me twice that I had him hanging the wrong way (meaning he should be facing outwards)
///my daughter says, “Dad, that’s just wrong.”To remove any trace of doubt, here’s a shot that includes the printed paper. This was one of the first attempts. I had to go with the multiple thread method because he was spinning.

ParticipantI must say this was one of the more, uuhhh, interesting discussion threads I’ve seen. Totally my sense of humor. I was laughing out loud and the Mrs. read it and didn’t get it.

ParticipantI then went out with the kids and looked for stuff to photograph. The results were less than stunning. Everything was pretty blurry. I couldn’t match the clarity of corsec67’s lamp.
Here’s one of the first ones with the pinhole lens only 5 minutes old –

Here’s one down by the river –

I’ll try some more stuff. Oh yeah, and by the way, blow off that sensor before doing these pinhole pics. Sensor dust just jumps out and pokes you in the eye.
/or maybe leave it there. The specks just might add something to this format.

ParticipantI made a pinhole “lens” today. While I looked at several sources, I think that I just copied how one guy did it. I drilled a smallish hole in the center of a camera body cap. Then I cut out a circle from an aluminum can several mm smaller than the inside of the cap (I think that an even smaller disc would be better to allow more area for tape to stick). I then sanded both side of the aluminum to make it a bit thinner. I used a sewing needle to make the smallest hole I could. Sanding down the bump before the needle actually penetrated seemed to be helpful. Working on the inside of the cap, I just lined up the tiny hole in the middle of the larger one in the cap and pressed down the tape.
Here it is in pictures –

Participant(View it like a MagicEye. Relax your eyes so that you’re focusing beyond the screen until the two halves come together in the middle)
Looks like he is wearing a big poofy white hat when I do that.

ParticipantU-Man, your 2008-11-19 08:06:13 PM isn’t vote enabled, and … wow, that is incredible. High-key really works well there.
Thanks for the heads-up! It really was an accident/failed experiment, too.
Elsinore, can you please enable voting on that one? If not, I can re-post.

ParticipantI was totally uninterested in this contest until a few days ago when, as others have related, I started going through the archive. Then I started to get into it. After seeing the initial entries tonight, I am very pleasantly surprised at how cool many of the entries are.
Also, if corsec67 ever gets sick or anything and needs a stand in photographer, I volunteer.

ParticipantThanks. Obviously, this project is not on my fast-track. But, I’ll try to make it work over the next few days.
