The only thing I’m slacking on is not updating the “Themes we’ve used” post in a while. If I don’t get to it this weekend, February Recess starts next weekend.

Elsinore and I decided to cave to our pack-rat natures and begin archiving Theme discussion/voting threads in the “Where old threads go to die” forum. It will make it easy to update the post later, and can be used for reference either when submitting a theme or referencing one in the future (if one becomes a classic)

. . . but a performance shooter has a responsibility to capture their subject in the best light (no pun intended) so I try very hard not to shoot the “O” face all performers get.

I was fortunate enough to have been at the Wesleyan Chapel in Seneca Falls a couple years ago when it was being re-dedicated. I was playing photojournalist, and there’s a couple painful shots in the set. One is of a congresswoman who I disagree with on almost everything. It looks like her face can’t decide which direction to slide off her skull. I have no plans to let it into the wild, but it’s always good for a laugh on a slow archive dive day.

(The Wesleyan Chapel is where the first Womens’ Rights Convention was held. They wrote the Declaration of Sentiments and was possibly the first place where women publicly declared a desire for suffrage. It’s now a National Park, and is a short walk from the National Womens’ Hall of Fame.)

Before assessing the photos, I must say that I hope next year they just drag out the guys from Dokken, Poison, Ratt, Crue and as many other 80s glam metal bands as they can and put on a show my wife and I won’t look at each other and say “What the fuck are we watching?” Granted, we’re not in the target demographic, but there wasn’t even a sop to us as there usually is during the halftime show. That was just “meh.” Visually interesting “meh,” but it was the only time all night I went to the bathroom and wasn’t worrying I was missing anything (this counts the blackout.)

As for the photos, I kinds feel like bender16v. If I were shooting for Beyonce, I’d never show her 17 of the 20. If I’m shooting for the Enquirer or the Sun or some other “gotcha” tabloid, I’m selling all of these at confiscatory rates. If I’m a news/sports/entertainment photographer shooting for a more traditional outlet, I suppose I’m letting my editor pick, but I can’t imagine most of these being attractive enough to be utilized. There’s got to be better pics.

I was imagining neon lights. They didn’t have to be lit up, but the gas-filled glass tubes was what was in my head when I proposed this. The only specific “no” I put into the Theme suggestion was no Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler Neons.

But… as orionid usually says: “let the voters decide!”

For those interested, on your Fark preferences page, under the “Comment Preferences”, un-checking “Enable modern rich text (WYSIWYG) editor for posting comments” will default you back to ye olde posting methods (at least it works for me).

I will look for that. I didn’t see it, but if you say it’s there, I will look again. (I probably just didn’t understand the phrasing at the time. I’m not at my best when I’m frustrated.)

yeah I figured out that there is a “button” on the right side on the top to switch it back to the old style submission box. but the new thing confused me enough on my first entry I forgot to enable voting.

I found that, too after griping, but it still is annoying. I finally got around to visiting my Preferences page for the first time in years, and that’s about the only thing you can’t change.

Does anybody know how to ask Drew or Mike (or any of the other Fark code monkeys) to include that as a preference? (I don’t mean one of hundreds (thousands) of Farkbacks…)

Query: Can I make a photomosaic? I ask because it’s an image made up of photos, so it may occupy a grey area.

(I’m not committed to anything yet, but if the option’s open, I may explore it, if it’s not, it would be a waste of time, now wouldn’t it?)

Your image’s URL goes where the “http://” is.

There’s also a Firefox extension that will create the html for you if you copy the URL to your clipboard.

So I trotted over the Bibliostats to see how I did (I was pretty sure it was decent) and was third (for combined)… neat!

However, while i was looking, I noticed somebody named bakerlaw76 (or something similar) managed to get 4 pix into the contest.

I honestly thought it would be harder to find pix for this one than it was. I didn’t find anything recently that fits (my niece wouldn’t let me photograph the spot where she just lost her first tooth), so I started archive diving, and found 3 in a very reasonable amount of time, and I didn’t even have to stretch the definition. (I didn’t even have to go through the Italy pix, either.)

Should be fun!

Thanks. all 3 were archive dives but I hope to get at least 2 or 3 votes.

The weather around here also mandated archive dives. I’m pretty happy with what I got, though. Just hoping to show up someplace respectable.

Read more carefully. He’d have been fine with a crop. DQ’d for digitally removing something that did not alter the substance of the photograph.

He could have burned it into blackness or cropped it out, but using the clone tool was a hard and fast no-no.
