Thanks everybody, I really need to learn about metering. I think that I understand other variables, but not entirely exposure. I will study the Zone System and try to work with the light meter more. I played around with spot and center-weighted metering tonight. My camera has a button for AE-L/AF-L and I’ll try to figure out what that does too. Also I think that the auto focus seems to struggle at 300mm, I’ll try your tip next time out Kestrana.

Here is one from tonight at 300mm and the focus is a bit off. It is at f5.6 and the spot in front of the geese look more clear than heads of the geese.

and one without any correction at 200mm where they are much more clear:

and finally one with Center Weighted Average with no post processing:

I’ve only had one “Fark Vacation”. It’s a temporary ban, usually 24 hours for posting something that could maybe be considered NSFW, or off-topic chatter in a photoshop contest.

    Also, congrats aspidites!

I had a really hard time choosing. I even went out driving around until sundown tonight trying to get some good ones. I did see some deer, but they wouldn’t come out of the shadows.

    Here are some Bees:

http://bit.ly/mY1y22 – Mommy Merganzer (I think she had 15 little ones following her)
http://bit.ly/ox6qu2 – I don’t know what these are, but it looks like one forgot to buy toilet paper at the supermarket
http://bit.ly/pfZFyv – Another shot of the fawn that ran down my street while I was packing to move north
http://bit.ly/pWFaAb – The little lizard who I found living in my ’79 Scirocco project car

    All should pop, I hope.

Thanks for the string tip, I’ll have to try that since I travel a lot for work and it’s hard enough dragging a camera bag plus my computer on planes so there’s no room for a tripod. If it helps even a little it would be worth it, although I bet it takes a little while to get used to using it.

It’s going to be tough for me to choose photos for this evening. I don’t have any really outstanding ones, but wildlife is one of my main subjects. I moved out of Mississippi last week and before I left I went looking for gators at one of my local fishing holes. I only saw one and couldn’t get a good shot.

I didn’t have many ideas for this one and even less time with moving cross-country this week. I even screwed up one of my entries and made it way too narrow when resizing. As always, there are some really nice entries this week.

5/10 here, it took me missing a couple to notice the depth of field on some as well.

Thanks Choc-Ful-A, my wife chose that one. After looking through my photos from the past few months it seems like half are of things in the air. I’ll try to get some b-sides up since I think I like them a little better.

There really are many jaw-dropping photos this week. Those eagle and osprey photos are stunning.

Thanks for the info. I think I need to start carrying a tripod with me since I can’t hold still for that long. Or maybe get creative and find rocks or stumps on which to set the camera.

Great shots, many times I wish I still lived in Saranac Lake. I really wish I had a decent camera when I did live there. I took a lot of camera phone shots that don’t do justice to the scenery. I only went up Ampersand once and was really surprised by how windy it is up there, and how spectacular the view is was equally as stunning.

I hope that you made time for a stop or two at Donnelly’s Ice Cream, I really miss that place but it packs on the pounds when you go there every day.

Kestrana, May I ask what settings you used for your “hiking light” photo? I really like it. I was hiking Monday and tried to capture a similar shot but was unsuccessful. I’m guessing it has something to do with exposure compensation but I don’t know how that works yet.

Mine is a replacement name since I use bender or bender16v everywhere else but I forgot my password on fark. I’ve worked in tube bending for 16 years, so it makes sense. Most people think of the cartoon or John Bender who messes with the bull. I really wish I could change my fark name since it is really long and is difficult to type out if I’m using my phone. I chose it because it is one of the most ludicrous statements I’ve ever heard. Mike Tyson threw it into one of his rants years ago, or something similar anyway.

This one is difficult for me too. At first I couldn’t think of anything in particular but then I realized that I take a lot of photos when I’m out fishing so now I have tons of them from which to choose. One that I have in mind might also fit the “Airborne” too, but I think it fits this one better.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody. I do have some questions, but I will start a new topic for those.

Thanks Kestrana, don’t want to get too off topic but I’m rather new to photography. The name is a only on fark because I forgot the password to my old one. I think my B&W lack contrast, but I will keep trying. I like the idea of a weekly challenge to try new things.

Wow U-Man, I take my camera out fishing all of the time. I haven’t used the tripod on the boat yet and now I never will. That is terrible, if you know where you lost it maybe you can dredge for it? I found a rod I lost by rigging up one of those old metal stringers with the hooks open and some lead attached. I bought a Lily Pod for use in the boat but haven’t tried it yet. BTW, your photos are always impressive.
