ParticipantI hope everybody is safe. I lived in Mississippi during the big outbreak last year and one passed about 1/4 mile from my house. I was scared, screaming for Auntie Em as it sounded like a train going over my house. The destruction that they cause is hard to put into words. While I hadn’t really started taking photos seriously at that time, I still didn’t even feel right taking photos with my phone out of respect for my neighbors who had lost so much. The only positive from it was that I got to use my new chainsaw, a lot.

ParticipantI also just realized this one is next week. I’ve been reading old literature and business books, which might not be too good. Our bookshelves are mostly full of poetry books since my wife studied, writes, and teaches that. Possibly I can find some good ideas in a Bukowski book. This can be a good project for the weekend.

ParticipantA tough one for me. I finally had an idea in my head and went for a drive this evening. It’s foggy here and my idea would have looked great, but I couldn’t find my subject: a bar with a neon sign and a parking lot in front. Oh well, I did get one shot and found another old one.

ParticipantWhich most evokes “noir”?
Bride shot! Definitely!
Agreed, that one is striking!
I’ve had lots of ideas for this one but zero time. Unless I can do something in my hotel room tonight I will have to dig into my very small archive for this one, which probably means I’ll be sitting it out. I like the theme a lot though and should try to do something along these lines for fun in the future.

ParticipantI agree with pretty much everything said above. I have been luckily spared from viewing all of the crappy photos on fb, with the exception of a few women that post ridiculous self portraits from absurd angles. I have not witnessed any of the filter apps and had to look them up to see what everybody was talking about.
Currently I have 3,142 photos on my iphone and must say that it replaced my point-and-shoot, but 99% of these are snapshots and not “photographs”. My phone is always with me due to being on call 24/7 which sucks, but if I see something worthy of a photo I can catch it quickly. That being said, I don’t think that I have a single photo on my phone that wouldn’t have been better with a real camera. Because of the convenience I don’t think that this is a fad and it is not going away. One point to consider is how much all of these photos on fb, g+, flickr, etc. are documenting modern life. Just think, in 100 years people will know exactly what Jimbo had for breakfast on February 19, 2012!

ParticipantI spend all day today trying to get some good shots for this one. I started at 7:30 (sunrise) this morning and made an arduous trek all around this region but the light was crap all day. In any case I got a lot of exercise walking up and down paths and through villages after driving from one town to another looking for picturesque churches. I think I might end up with only one from today that will be good.

ParticipantI am also afraid of approaching people at random and don’t want to end up doin’ time, so I’m curious if pics of people in public settings would fit in here? I didn’t actually talk to them, but one photo that I had in mind is of a couple getting married in a park where it wouldn’t have been appropriate to talk to them anyway. I’m not sure if the focus of the theme’s wording “get close to, or get to know” requires direct interaction or if it is even appropriate to post pics without consent.

ParticipantEven with the reported “camera shake” that is pretty sharp. Any idea what shutter speed he had to use for those? I didn’t see it in the article and there’s no Exif. I’m curious because there are some bald eagles at a park near me but I just can’t get close enough with my 70-300mm. I’ve bushwacked my way through the woods to get closer but they didn’t like that and left before I could get anywhere near them from that side of the river. My camera budget is blown for right now after getting some new lenses, but if it is still possible to use a teleconverter for perching birds and possibly action shots I might add one to my wish list. I know I would also need to get a very solid tripod.

Participantmopsy, I go up to Bessemer every January to ski with a big group of guys. This was my 8th or 9th year and the 28th year for the charter members of the group. I came across the north route this time through Marquette but I have taken the south way once before. I took some extra time on the was over to see some falls, etc. I’ve never been up there in the summer but really, really want to get to the Apostle Islands this year. The long drive makes it somewhat tough though.
The U.P. is very remote and reminds me of when I lived in the middle of the Adirondack Park. I really loved it there but being so remote has some drawbacks so unfortunately we moved south.
I’d like to visit the U.P. a lot more and had hopes of going to the Porcupine Mountains for this contest but I didn’t make it over there.

ParticipantI had to work in Indiana today and got home a little late, missed the 8 P.M. premier again.

ParticipantThat’s a terrible situation. I can understand because it would be similar to me selling my fishing stuff. I was in a similar situation a couple years ago and thankfully my wife had just graduated and found a job pretty quickly to get us by. We did have to move a few times though. I wish you the best of luck in court but I’m sure that will take a long time to get resolved. I would really try to hold off on selling anything until it is absolutely necessary. But if you do end up selling then when you get back on your feet maybe you will be able to get that back and then some.

ParticipantFarktographer, I thought the soft focus filter would work out better than it did. Most of the landscapes I tried with it look bad, especially if there is any bright light since it gets blown out. I’ve never tried stockings though.
In a couple of weeks I’ll be driving across Michigan’s U.P. Talk about desolate! I’ve scheduled an extra day to mess around and take photos too.

ParticipantI got you Yugoboy. I also have 2 more if anybody wants one. I don’t see myself using them since I just browse the main page, do this, and once in a great while enter a PS contest. I’m not sure what else to do with them.

ParticipantSame here, I’ve tried “clean sensor” several times and it has been through many power cycles where it does that as well. Maybe I’ll try to swing by the local camera shop and see if they can clean it. 😈
I looked at photos from last week and it showed up at f11, but not f10. Here’s one from last week with a different lens, straight out of the camera with it in the same place:
