If he’s already got a medium zoom, a tele-extender may be a cheaper way to extend that. I’ve got a 1.4X TE that I use on my 70-200 when I want a little extra range. There’s also a 2X TE, but you lose 1 f/stop with the 1.4 and 2 with the 2X, so that’s why I went with it instead.

Congrats again, olavf. That had to have made all your prep work feel worth it, eh?

Wow. What an awesome eye for everyday life she had.

Yeah, what they said! The sign of a true photographer – seeing the interesting in the mundane. Very cool indeed.

and some of us only vote at the end of the contest….

Yep, that’s what I do. I vote for my own shortly after posting so they show up in my stats scraper and then I come back Sat night and vote for everything else I like.

(Please tell me you all vote for your own also, right? I mean, if you like them enough to post, you like them enough to vote for them, at least that’s my thought. If no one else does this let me know and I’ll stop too so it’s fair.)

Also, I’m half quivering with anticipation, half dreading returning to college. I plan on doubling up between nuclear and aerospace engineering. Hooray for 26th level differentiations of the fission equation whilst maintaining proper thermal properties in set orbital dynamics. But hey, someone’s gotta design the next generation of satellites.

/And if I work where I want to end up working, you’d better throw some optical equations in there for good measure.

I missed this post earlier somehow. Mad props to you. I’m not sure I’d have the stamina to do it now (at least for real – it’d be a lotta fun if it was learning just for learning’s sake). I’ve sadly forgotten most of my high-level math, so I’m dreading when my youngest starts coming to me for calc help.

    Error403 here.

Welcome! It’s a lovely image. Hope to see more of your stuff in the contests.

And since no one has said it yet; This thread’s going EPIC

I noticed that today, too. Here it is graphically:

The gray is the average of the past 11 contests, the red is the highest of those contests (Blur from 12/15 with 2277 votes) and the blue is where we are now. It’s looking to be, as you said, epic!

And of course I’d pick this week to return to my mediocre ways. 🙄

Edited to note: Oops, somehow the labels on the timeline axis got screwed up, so just ignore that part.

/Crap. Now I have to kill all of you.

Will that be by 45KV or .30 cal? 😆

/Remember to get good pictures for Sparks ‘n Arcs II

As an astronomy/physics student who has taken far too many quantum and thermal classes to be consistent with good mental health…

Yeah, I think there’s something about upper-level physics that either requires or generates (I’m not sure, it’s a chicken-and–egg thing) a certain, shall we say, different way of thinking. 🙂 Every one of my physics professors fit the stereotype to a tee.

And I think Teller and Openheimer might disagree with you about the lack of important stakes. 😉 (Not to diminish the pressure of being doctor at all.)

Anyway, good luck with your studies, stay sane, and keep with it. I consider physics to be the top of pile of engineering-related studies. As I used to rib my friend who’s a petroleum engineer, “The rest of y’all just plug numbers into forumlas, the physicists derived those formulas in the first place!”

I think in that case, yes. The scanner becomes the imaging plane, no different from the sensor in our dSLRs (except for the actual digitization method, of course). As I stated in the other thread, I have no problem with it, I just don’t think using a scanner to directly create a digital image is necessarily photography.

Oh, and just to clarify, I’m absolutely not advocating the removal of the current image in question.

Hmmm….. Now I’m looking at this and thinking about an old ($$$) silver-platter variable capacitor from multi MW radio amplifiers. With this voltage (or possibly higher), and a variable cap, you could conceivably dial-down the exposure time into Edgarton-esque exposures stopping 3000fps .30 cal rifle rounds.

See, kes, you’ve nothing to worry about. Your house will be full of .30 cal holes long before it burns down. 😉

Uranus, my eyes can’t convince my brain that those are three pillars and not two raised backlit panels. I don’t know if you were going for optical illusion, but you succeeded with me, anyway.

I don’t feel strongly about it, but I’ll throw in my two cents re: scanners.

Is it art? It can be. In the case at hand, definitely. Is it digital imaging? Yes, of course. Is it photography? No, but the line separating the two isn’t well defined as Zero pointed out.

LeicaLens, I really like your first three B’s. The first B has really nice bokeh and that “awwww, how cute” factor. And I like how the colors pop in the umbrella B.

Not saying I don’t like your A’s (you are No Catchy Nickname on Fark, right?), but I’d definitely have used the first B as an A.

olavf and orionid, I can’t tell you how close we were to having 3 versions of the holy hand grenade shot. I kinda wish I did it now because of the “meta-ness” of having 3 of them. 😆

Oh, and great job on those, both of you.
