What’s going on? Have I forgotten to install some other required program? I’m used to being able to figure out computer problems, but this one has just been inscrutable to me, which is frustrating. Any ideas?

sounds like me and my recent triple boot grub problems.

no i can’t help you, just sympathize with computer problems.

At the end of the day, it’s not about money, never was. It is about the love of doing it. Money would just be the cherry on top of a delicious, delicious cake…or pie if pie is more your thing 😀

from ’71 to ’78 roughly i was around folks who either worked as photographers (not weddings) or were trying to break into it full time. for them too it wasn’t the money but the love of photography. some had jobs as staff photographers, some were going at it through darkroom work.

it’s the lucky few who can simply take photos they like and sell them. good luck as you pursue this.

ennuipoet you’re right the bar to entry is much higher now than it was. i was flogging my “art” in the early seventies when it was easier. and i still didn’t do well 🙁

my sister does know a lot of folks in her art community and gets invited to submit now. but it wasn’t always like that so hang in there. BTW she’s in a crowded market in so cal so i can understand what you are saying. also she doesn’t rely on selling her art since she is retired.

I can’t see it’s possible you don’t have but one view from Fark. But I haven’t read up on how flickr tracks such things. I have found for my own images, ‘click for bigger/better’ really doesn’t result in much traffic, in comparison to the views of the ‘original’ 640×1100 (whatever) image. It’s never been ‘one’–even when I didn’t get a single vote besides my own.

well this was recent stats. and i use paid hosting, other than flickr, for my entries. the one viewed was of my dog with a toy. not a contest entry and no idea why someone might have wanted to see it. it was uploaded last april.

i use flickr to share stuff with you guys and on fark quite often since it’s easier than my paid hosting.

(And yes, I found someone to cover the OT shift so I can mess with this project for the next couple days.)

that won’t pay for your truck 🙂

checked my flickr stats. how depressing. one view from fark. oh well, no fame for me 🙁

I LOL’d except for the part about giving photos away for free…that stung a little bit.

If I knew a better way to promote my stuff AND make money, I’d do it.

there is always stockphoto.com or whatever it’s called. there are (or used to be) other similar places where they show your photos to someone who is looking for NYC shots. if yours are chosen they get a cut. in my experience those places pick from shots you submit. they also rotate shots every ?? month(s).

my sister is the director of a small gallery (i know you’ve been told this more than once) where they have juried shows every couple of months. i’d bet NY has lots of small galleries that do that also.

and giving your photos away isn’t in itself a bad idea. the watermark over the center, not so much.

oh and before i forget, someone here had a deal with the local pub where they got hanging space. the pub got local art, the farktographer a place to show, and perhaps sell, their art.

since i know the history of both farktography on fark and this site i hadn’t read the thread until today.

    1) it brings back lots of memories, mostly good. but also some sadness since so many fine folks are no longer participating. for me RL friends move on and you aren’t too aware of it nor reminded. with the FSM and PS contest stats any checking on old contests is always bitter sweet.

    2) it’s always interesting to see how others in a shared experience view that experience. the “remember when, well you did, but you said, no it was ….” thing.

    3) it’s been almost ten years since i joined fark and five since joining farktography.net. a lot has changed in RL but this has remained a constant. so thank you all for that.

Edited because BBCode can’t read a complex URL.

ennuipoet looks like we found the answer to the blank posts from the other day.

i too have a hippy strap. bought aftermarket 35 years ago. doesn’t get used much since i generally take the whole bag when i go photoing.

olavf i have a home made draw string bad with sling made from parachute nylon for the tripod and monopod. it hangs quiver like across my back and doesn’t really get in the way and is pretty light.

if we are going for “current world languages” perhaps we might want those other than English to specify the letter. a pile or twigs might be symbolic of an oriental language or it might be a pile of twigs. i’d never know.

darned good thing you don’t have a film camera or you couldn’t have used this bag.

with my camera bag i reverse what they label the mesh pocket and front pocket for.
