ParticipantI really didn’t think the difference between monitors would be that much, something to keep in mind I guess.
i have dual monitors that aren’t calibrated to each other. i often wonder what folks see at their end.

ParticipantWow… this one snuck up on me. I’m too beat to even think about corralling the proper HTML to participate this week. I’ve got Rust never sleeps ready, but not this one… looking forward to voting tomorrow.
at the top of the fark comment box there is a series of button. do you know that the mountain range looking thingy second from the right will auto fill your HTML needs?

Participanti started to put ubuntu 11.10 on a machine for a friend and gave up. wiped the hard drive and put a copy of XP Pro instead. someone i know had an extra license i could use.
my old triple boot won’t run anything after 9.10 which is really weird for ubuntu.

ParticipantIt’s also really helpful at dusty places. Whenever I was shooting at the racetrack in NY, if it hadn’t rained in a few days, I would get too scared to change lenses due to dust.
when i had the minolta 7D i had problems with dust on occasion. but the D3000 either repels it or the cleaner thingy works better. also haven’t had any dust problems with the D5100 but i’ve only had it a couple of months.

Participantthere is no Mrs Curious so that’s not an issue. and actually when there was there was also more money.
i really don’t usually shoot in places where really rapid lens changes are needed. otoh having a body that will accept all my lenses if needed is a plus. as far as battery life i have extra batteries for both the D5100 and the D3000. and 4 or 5 sets of 4 of AA for the minolta. i don’t run out of batteries in the field.
if i got what i wanted from selling the D3000 the money would offset half the D5100. and i really don’t want any other gear right now. well a nice flash would be a plus.
when i shot film i had (still have) 3 XD-11 minolta bodies. one with Tri-X, one with color negative film and one with color positive fim. but with the digital you don’t need that.

Participantmaybe it’s jealousy but the three day beard just looks dirty to me. or it’s lazy or i’m old. you pick one.

ParticipantI’m not sure if I mentioned and questioned it before, but if this new phone is so great at video and still simultaniously, and there were two guys using them, why the need for the camera men with the pro grade helmet mounted rigs? I’m thinking that there is more smoke and mirrors to this ad scheme than just the model’s costume and the other parachuters with smoke bombs.
somewhere on this site is a thread talking about the iPhone fashion shoot done by some big name fashion photog. lots of smoke and mirrors on that one.
perhaps this isn’t germane here but the photo accessories for iPhones is both amazing and depressing. extra lenses ???? telezooms

Participantmaybe i’ll try it again.

Participantwhen i shipped promotional items for Glastron Boat Co folks would constantly want freebies. believe me your wearing a jacket with the company logo around town isn’t worth the cost of the jacket. stop being a cheapskate and just buy the jacket if you want it.

ParticipantMost of the people I meet on a daily basis don’t get to say “I could do that” when they see what I create.
let me rephrase that for you: Most of the people I meet on a daily basis shouldn’t say “I could do that” when they see what I create.
it’s been my experience that all to often well meaning folks fail to grasp the complexities of what they see and think they could do as well if not better.
and it’s not just photography. fix a guys car in half and hour or his leaking pipe and he will moan and groan about having to pay for it. if you can make it look easy folks will think it’s easy. forget the thousands in tools and the years of learning how to use them.
and by now after years of participation awards — man i hate people sometimes. and i can assure you that “if you’re so fucking smart fix it yourself” doesn’t endear you to people.
but that’s just me.

Participantgot a 18-55 kit lens and bought a 55-300 when i got the D3000. to have a better one lens solution got a 18-105 and i’m happy with it. don’t hike with it but i do day trip to the MS coast all the time and it works well for that.

Participanti’m in the glad it got swapped crowd. my rusty shots were — well either bad or none existent.
kind of like my moon shots from last night. we had rain earlier then it cleared up but my shots still suck.

ParticipantEls, just noticed that you’ve got 2010 instead of 2011 in the first post.

Participanti ran Win95 on an IBM aptiva with a Pentium (one) 100MHz CPU, 8MB RAM and a 1.2GB HDD. uphill both ways in the snow.
added a 4GB HDD ($209), an evergreen AMD CPU upgrade kit K6-2 at 333Mhz (price forgotten) and eventually RAM to a total of 64MB. all it could handle and IIRC $100 by the time i got done.
my latest box which is a couple of years old has a AMD phenom ll x4 955 3.2Ghz, 8GB RAM and running Win7. and i swear the experience all too often is no better than the Win95 box. well photoshop runs better and video editing is better but this isn’t. nor is email.

Participanti get what i deem to be less than critically sharp photos of birds on fence posts too. having been taught to check sharpness with a grain magnifier i’m picky. i need to go out some day with the new camera to the coast where there is an abundance of seagulls and shoot them. flying, walking, standing, at 25 yards 50, 100, 500 — ok that may be too far away. and the coast with open sunlight should produce high enough shutter speeds that i can rule out hand shake. or i could use a tripod since, you know, i keep one in the car.
one of fthe problems with manual focus on my lenses is that they were designed for use by folks who never manually focus. the focusing rings are pathetic.
i have read about lenses that front or back focus and will do some more tests for that too. i like the camera and the lenses and am ok with the photos — usually.
