ParticipantI think most of the down turn is a series of fairly complex themes requiring original content, which drives off the folks who like to pop in a shot from their archives. The voting thing has also played a role. I suspect we shall pick back up again as we come into a new set of themes.
Here’s to you being right.

ParticipantI wonder,…
Awesome.

ParticipantHey CISS, great minds etc.
/You pulled off the illusion better I think.

ParticipantAfter watching one of them spend quite some time trying to unscrew my circular polarizer, I’ve come to the conclusion that none of them are intelligent enough to carry on a conversation
Priceless.
Maybe I should start packing Chinese finger puzzles. I wonder what happens when you feed them peanut butter? Do they get their heads stuck in jars?

ParticipantSo is it the fact that it looks like a rocket they have an issue with or all bulb type puffers? Mine doesn’t have fins,.. and yes I know it won’t be as stable at ballistic velocities. I really don’t want my puffer to get commandeered,.. in the name of Justice and Freedom,… and saving me from radical tourism.

ParticipantSo what is the impetus for riding trails with road bikes? Is this a new “thing” or just an outlier?

ParticipantCISS,
Thanks for the data (likes me some data). I have wondered during my short time here if there was not a correlation between entrants and votes. It looks like to me just flipping back and forth with the two charts that there is a pretty strong one. While I don’t think the farktographers are the only voters, they appear to be a major player in they constituency.
This may support the idea of “open themes”, those that very casual (polar opposite of regulars) photographers participate in netting the most votes because the voting population is the participating population, or at least in a significant way.

ParticipantThe image viewer I have used for many years is XnView (windoze). It handles Canon RAW (possibly Nikon, don’t know) and just about anything else. It also does limited scripted processing if you have simple tasks to perform on bulk images (I used to have make small jpeg copies where I didn’t have them from the camera).
Oh yeah, and best of all,… it’s free.

ParticipantThanks Cuda, that seems like some useful advice. There are a couple of local bike shops that have good reps and deal in used bikes so I can start comparing numbers. Much appreciated.

ParticipantThanks for the responses.
I understood when I bought the Trek that it was suited to those purposes so I’m not criticizing it, I just like to understand things as thoroughly as possible, especially potentially expensive things.
There’s a group of people who have asked if I would like to ride with them. They ride rural roads, moderately hilly (I expect you understand all this given our close proximity) for distances of 20-40 miles, typical being 25. They are tolerant of and encouraging to noobs but I don’t want to hold them up all the time.
Another thought I have had; is it worth considering adding to or modifying the Trek vs dropping 1K on a separate bike?

ParticipantHey rav,
I went through this decision process some time ago. I wound up getting a big achromat (120 mm f5) for < $300. You probably can mount it on that behemoth of yours too (might have to remove the dew shield on the 120mm). I guess it boils down to if you can tolerate chromatic aberration, but I'd be willing to guess there is a software solution for that (I know there is for my 10-22 f3.5 Canon lens).

ParticipantThe windmill shot was a dive. The other two were fresh. The scenario with the windmill shot was as a couple people have described: I opened “Breakfast of Champions” and that was the first sentence I saw, I said to myself “I have the perfect photograph for that”. The others, not so much.
edited to say:
Thanks kashari and Baracuda.

ParticipantI’m voting communist. We total the votes of a given theme, then divvy them up to person by number of submissions they had. This way, nobody gets hurt, and it doesn’t matter how hard or how little you work at your photos. Whaddayasay? 😉
/Voted to bring back the 1-vote.
I’d like to suggest that we become a anarcho-syndicalist commune. Where we take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week, and all the decision of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting.

ParticipantSent my vote for one button system.

ParticipantSome of ya’ll may find this useful.
Is a small free windoze program that has three basic inputs:
1) camera data (sensor size, pixel size)
b) telescope data (aperture, focal ratio)
III) an image from its libraryThe library of object images that comes with it is fairly representative of the things you would be interested in.
The program takes these data and overlays the FOV for the camera/scope combo (what you final image will cover)
onto the object image. Pretty useful if you have several cameras/scopes or are trying to figure out which camera to buy
for your scope. Is useful in telling you that the object will fill, underfill or overfill the frame. Can help for planning
mosaics, or the use of focal reducers. -
