ParticipantEven being told it was an illusion I didn’t see how for a long time after looking at the picture, since it’s perfectly logical to assume the overhead of the arch curves back and that’s just not visible in the picture. But good job to everyone on great pictures.
Also the guy who “corrected” us on the plural of “Legos” really honked me off.

But seriously, re: backscatter machines – take the patdown or get in the other line. Please, for your own health, do not go through these machines and do not let your family and friends. The science is extremely dubious and is based on your entire body absorbing the amount of radiation you are blasted with BUT only your epidermal layer is taking the hit because of the nature of delivery and kind of radiation. Especially frequent travelers, since air travel gives you extra radiation anyway.
Or so I have heard from orionid who takes this stuff seriously and kinda knows about it some.

ParticipantFluffybunny we have these discussions regularly, and you are correct – the more entrants/entries a contest gets, the more voting there is. Generally, we have a low spot for participation through the November and December holiday season, and then a spike in January which lulls down to “normal” ups and downs for the large part of the year.
What CISS is seeing about a decline since October is a little troubling. There’s two things I can see possibly affecting it – the theme choices (which have been pretty varied but may have leaned more on the “must shoot new” than archive dives which drives down casual participation a lot) and the voting change which may have decreased total votes.
We keep going forward though. With Legos being a popular subject for many people and Curves being a good archive dive thread, I am interested to see what happens participation wise.

ParticipantI just talked to LeicaLens re: farkbook and he is super busy and not feeling photography right now but he said he will be back eventually. We all go through those periods.
As for other things I honestly think the change in voting has hurt all Fark contest threads.

ParticipantRAW is better – but only if you have the ability to use it. From what you’re describing, it’s not appropriate for your uses, so save yourself the conversion time and shoot. Jpgs

ParticipantI only shoot RAW .nef files but I use a photo editor that reads them as the raw file and only exports to .jpg after I am done. I think this is the best way because it reduces .jpg degradation.
I know orionid shoots both but he uses the .jpgs just as thumbnails that are easy for him to look at when determining what to process, and processes the .nef file.
If you’re not going to edit the RAW files, I don’t really know why you’d want to shoot them and just stick to .jpg. It does take a long time to convert with NEX software. I usually do it in small batches, and process as I go, for the time I need to convert (which is pretty much limited to HDR creation although Photomatix 4 likes the .NEF files now so I don’t need to do that anymore).

ParticipantAlso, if it’s not broken, don’t try to fix it.

Participant“”My thoughts re:saying archive dives were okay was threefold, 1. On the off chance you opened a book and went “man I already have a perfect shot for that” 2. Because this exact exercise is common in other forms of media (we did it every day in creative writing – taking sentence prompts) I thought there might be a few who had done it before and. 3. I never like limiting themes if it isn’t necessary and I figured the casual interpretation and participation would benefit. Since llama didn’t chime in arte a few days I did

ParticipantYou can use other things in the photo as long as legos (or similar) are the primary subject.

ParticipantIt was indeed me. However I’m 100% okay with returning to the old system if my idea couldn’t be implemented.

ParticipantAh. Well. I already sent my email to her. heh.
This is what I said:
Kestrana from Farktography here. Ennuipoet posted that you were soliciting input from the PSAEF forum on voting preferences. Farktography has been greatly impacted by the change to the voting scheme. Most users hate the new system. You can see some of the discussion at the following threads:

I can’t speak for every Farktography but I think most would be happy to go back to the old system.
Here’s my personal suggestions though – bear with me, it gets a little complex.
I think to please everyone, if it were possible to enable which buttons are present when you submit a theme, that would be the best option. I.E. In thread creation have the check box for “Enable Voting” and then a check box for “Best” and “Funny” independantly. Then you could enable a button that says “Best” only OR both a “Best” and “Funny” button OR only a “Funny” button. For us this would be great. If we’re doing a theme like Apples vs. Oranges. We could enable a Funny button. Most Farktography themes would have the best button. Threads like Headline of the Year could employ only a Funny button. And if the particular contest warranted it, the option for both exists. If you follow this route, I think you should be able to see voting tabulation pages for Best, Funny and Combined, depending on the options selected.
If the system doesn’t support my idea, having the ability to change the text of the vote button based on the intent of the thread would still be nice. If that’s also not possible, just go back to a single “Vote for Me!” button.
If for some reason enough people want two buttons, please, please, please let the voting page show combined votes. Something like kestrana [totalfark] 28 votes; 11 Best, 17 Funny
Doing this would enable us to still determine a winner in Farktography rather than a split winner which is what we’re doing now to the grumbling and confusion of everyone.I know we’re a comparatively smaller segment of the population and I appreciate that Fark is reviewing this issue, which has negatively impacted the grou

Participantkashari in lieu of another response, there’s nothing in the discussion that suggest you cannot archive dive if you know you already shot a picture that goes well with a line in a book you found.

Participanthere is my entry
Cool picture But…Farktography entries for this contest are posted on Fark.com on Wednesday th 14th at 8pm EST/EDT for TotalFarkers and a few hours later for the non total Farkers. Voting begins when it hits the main page.
Thanks. This is my first time so i was a little confused.
No problem Daniel, welcome to the forums. There will be a link on the forum main page and posted in this thread when the contest is live, as well as main page Farm. Meanwhile we’d love to know more about you and your interest in photography.
