ParticipantHah! Your remarkable wildlife photos of course – competition! All in good fun though, hopefully we can learn from some of what you’ve been shooting.
Well Thanks. I have been behind a camera of some kind since the early 80’s.
I didn’t know aboot this area until Elsinore sent me here when I reused a picture I had entered in 2005 or 2006.

I am *really* looking forward to your entries for the wildlife contest coming up. No pressure or anything. 🙂

ParticipantThat’d be the ultimate dark time. Man, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve stared at city lights from an observatory and wished for a massive power outage.

ParticipantThanks Kestrana, don’t want to get too off topic but I’m rather new to photography. The name is a only on fark because I forgot the password to my old one. I think my B&W lack contrast, but I will keep trying. I like the idea of a weekly challenge to try new things.
Hey, nothing wrong with that-I was a total noob when I joined up here, and now look at me! I’m a slightly more competent noob! In short: welcome, we’re glad to have you.

ParticipantFor those of you who aren’t facebook friends – check this shiat out. I copied my last status about the $3000 musky I caught today.
Holy. Farking. Carp.

ParticipantOh no! I don’t have any of his contact info, but if you could extend my well wishes too, that will be most appreciated. I’m really going to miss his entries-I hope he’s back in it soon!

ParticipantI’d be all for that. When I was on my high school newspaper, I actually did have a press pass. I never used it, but it was awesome to think that anytime I COULD use it if needed.

Participantoddmind, I immediately liked your “Highway 35, Woodside, California” shot when I saw it Wednesday night. And since I live in the area, sometimes driving home through Woodside when i-280 is congested, I wanted to figure out where it was taken. Well I finally got time to consult Google Maps today and realized Highway 35 is Skyline Drive! That’s one of my favorite destinations when I feel like I need to escape the stress of a normal day and got for a drive. You really captured the mysterious, larger than life feeling you get driving through the trees up there. It’s a fantastic photo.
Agreed-completely agreed. I loved that photo from moment one.

ParticipantIt looked fine to me on the contest thread just a minute ago.
…
Yep, still looks fine. Independent verification?EDIT: Okay, NOW it rotated. Weird.

ParticipantI posted today from class. (quiet, furtive wheee).
SUDDENLY, BEES! THOUSANDS OF THEM!

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/2NDV1LdWWTODsqm4s6XCdA?feat=directlinkWell, okay, maybe only two. It was a tough decision this week-I really loved both of my bees, but I decided that my other three were stronger. I’m a little hesitant now, seeing that Kat also did Manzanar, but our entries were different enough that I don’t think there’ll be a problem.

ParticipantI think orionid and loki have the right idea. I’ve never minded the announcement at the end of the thread-even if it was provisional, but acknowledging the newbies can’t hurt.

ParticipantThat’s a great one, Zero. Reminds me of the mock ad I did for the Kern’s nectar juice with captain Kern (Worf’s brother). I wonder where that got to?

Participantbtw…notice he’s using NIKON 😉
Well of course, the first rule of extreme location photography is not to use equipment you would miss if it breaks! 😈
😆 and a begrudged touche! to you.
Yeah, but also notice that the camera he suspended over the falls was a cannon. Seems like he WAS using equipment he wouldn’t miss there. 😀

Participant/also when I left the training building during Thursdays thunderstorms, I saw a forked bolt strike the lightning magnets on top of both plants simultaneously. Quite a wicked site.
*WISH* you coulda gotten a nice shot of that. I’m picturing something really super-villain awesome in my head.

ParticipantFor those that are looking for a dedicated macro lens but are choking at the cost (I know I was!) Tamron’s 90mm Macro is a nice little lens for a much nicer price
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-90mm-f-2.8-Di-Macro-Lens-Review.aspx
I picked mine up on the Fleabay for around three hundred. The AF is slow and clunky, but you don’t need AF for macro anyway. It also makes a nice portrait lens with good bokeh (It’s blurry muthafarka!). The run new around 500 and half that used. Canon, Nikon and (god forbid) Pentax mounts.
Thirded. I’m very fond of mine.

ParticipantYeah, I just noticed the instant voting thing too. What’s-a-goin’ on? Are the mods asleep, or is this a new feature?
