ParticipantI’m really wanting the 35mm f/1.4 now.
So did I until they said they were releasing a 24/1.4 in a few weeks. MMmmmm…..

ParticipantA friend and I have been debating ordering some just to see if it’ll work. My guess is that you should see a high-contrast blue and white image. And it develops with nothing more than water from your kitchen sink.
It might be possible with a camera (at least somewhat: http://www.alternativephotography.com/wp/processes/cyanotype/in-camera-cyanotype-negative-prints) but I don’t know if it would be possible to get enough exposure with a pinhole (I’m not sure the material would stay sensitized long enough)

ParticipantWell when we look historically at the photos we value the most, they pretty much fall in 2 categories
You forgot minimalist photos of the Rhine….

ParticipantI had similar (if not quite so excessive) thoughts: V1 + 80-200: 560mm, V1 + 70-300: 840mm… But I don’t expect a 2.8x crop from the 70-300 would be nearly that good….

ParticipantToday is WAY too quiet.
Here, play with some of these (requires chrome/safari, but kind of cool):

ParticipantB’s! (I should have stopped looking after the first half dozen or so, I can never pick well once I get a huge list like this…)

ParticipantDoes Flickr compress images and thereby reduce the quality?
The resized images on flickr have sharpening added, for sure (you can see it clearly if you upload an image the same size as one of their standard sizes and check the original vs the sized version). But they aren’t highly compressed – quite the opposite, the quality setting on the resized images is quite high – the 640 px ones are often unreasonably large for use in Farktography

ParticipantUnframed prints probably ought to be bagged with something stiff (cardboard etc) behind them, both to protect them from handling and because they’re a pain for people to take home otherwise, e.g. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/307334-REG/Print_File_PF1114BAG_Polyethylene_Bag_with_2.html

ParticipantJust because I could, here’s an example of the difference in default rendering on the same image between two different Raw converters (PS3 vs Aperture). The differences may not be too blatant on first glance, but it’s not exactly insignificant.

(note: I did this after exporting the image for the contest, I didn’t pick and choose the result beforehand ;-))sleeping
ParticipantMy take on this is that any sharpening is not OK. So, kashari, if you have your default RAW settings at a +1 they should be set back to ‘0’ for this theme.
It seems pretty clear from what ZE posted earlier:
I don’t see why not? Play with the white balance, use your in-camera “film simulator”, whatever “presets” or “styles” you may have … its all good.
That he was pretty much open to any use of camera settings (set before taking the photo) for this theme, and I don’t see why that wouldn’t include sharpen settings.
But doing it afterwards is pretty clearly Right Out…

ParticipantThe only team I really hate with the fire of a thousand suns is Indy. Was so hoping they’d go 0-17 this year.
Personally, I was hoping they’d win another game or two and miss out on Luck…

ParticipantYeah the price looks pretty steep (1700 for the body only from what was leaked on Amazon). Also, once you see it next to some other cameras it’s actually not that small – the same size as a Leica M9, more or less: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/fujifilmxpro1/images/sbsm9p.jpg

ParticipantI guess I just got one of the bad ones? I imagine it happens.
I think that’s fairly typical, actually – the old 50/1.8 is not great wide open, but very sharp stopped down some (the new 50/1.8G is reportedly rather better).
It’s often the case where a maker has two primes that the faster one is optimized for shooting wide open, and slower one for middling apertures (which can make them superior as a general purpose lens, but somewhat disappointing if you get it specifically as a low light lens)
sleeping
Participantwhat I have heard is that quite a few people prefer mild telephoto glass to 50mm primes for portraits because of the differences in distortion.
In DX-land a 50mm *is* a mild tele, more or less.
I seem to like taking photos where the subject has a lot of room to play.
That’s why you prefer the 50mm I think (a longer focal length gets more important when you’re getting towards filling the frame with the subject’s face). In fact you might find you prefer something even wider, say 28 or 35mm…

ParticipantA D1X seems like an awful big hunk of camera to lug around for not all that much resolution these days, and being the day’s high-resolution model, it’s not super-fast either. It ought to be moderately indestructible though, for example if you were looking for something fairly expendable to shoot in some kind of extreme conditions. Other than that I wouldn’t bother with it.
Squeaking seems to sometimes indicate a problem with the AF motor and sometimes not (they may actually be different sounds, I’m not sure). But you’re probably looking at 3-400$ to fix it if it does go, so I’d try to take that into account when pricing it….
